Two games by the Assembly Line:

Vaxine:

Youtube (unfortunately none of the people who uploaded videos on youtube have any idea how to play this game. Oh well, just admire the text plotter and pretty gouraud shaded balls :))

Interphase:

Youtube (quite possibly the first gouraud shaded cube on ST - 1989! And with floppy loading in the background!)

Strife, 1996 FPS with Doom engine, don't know how popular, at least I didn't know it and think it's an underrated gem. At the time, it was very forward thinking, more like an FPS/RPG with talking characters, quests, stealth, great atmosphere and three endings. There is a new slightly improved version.

Warlocked by Bits Studios (2000), a solid RTS that was perfectly tailored for the GBC:

Sadly released towards the very end of the commercial life of the console, and only in the US.

@mic: Aw man, great SNES suggestions. Thanks a lot, will check them out. :D
@pintcat: Also great suggestion. Very underrated "MOH" game.
@Weyland Yutani: I SO love the music to this game. Is there a soundtrack available somewhere? I can't seem to find anything. (Also I am in China now, so Internet search is kinda crippled. ;( )

Rastan Sage III aka Warrior Blade (Arcade)

Hilariously cheesy and epic beat'em up with gorgeous huge sprites, simple yet fun gameplay and hilariously cheesy german samples.

Layer Section aka Rayforce aka Raystorm aka Galactic Attack (Saturn, PSone, Arcade, Windows)
Very underrated Shoot'em Up, with a fun lock-on laser element to it, as well as gorgeous 2D graphics mixed with great 3D effects.

Chippoke Ralph no Daibouken aka Adventures of Little Ralph (PSone)

All the ST stuff above (Captain Blood, Vaxine, Interphase, Alpha Waves) was ported to x86 and they all run amazing on low-end hardware. Alpha Waves on PC even has better music. All worth checking out if you have a slow 286 or fast 808x.

Those are a lot...
It would be nice to get a short description, what makes them so playable and unique.

I got a SNES Disk once, with 30 jump n run games on it and was very excited. It turned out, they were all the same, but with some different sprites / scenarios... Pasta world, dragon world etc...
Very disappointing (I was very young back then)...

Soooo... There are sometimes mechanics that make the games stand out and I'm always curious, which ideas the developers had, that really worked...

So let us know! :D
