Who are the oldest active demo sceners?

category: general [glöplog]
Just wondering. Thank you in advance. :)

Depends on your definition of "active" I suppose, Derbyshire Ram passed away at the age of 68 and he was still writing for diskmags in his later years, but I don't think he's been doing any cracking at that point for a decade now or so.

probably some C64 scener I would guess. There's probably still some of them active now that started in the 80s.

Then again, does it count as "active" if they had a 20 year hiatus? (:

i should still talk my dad (Tron Origins/Kewlers) into doing 3D for us, as he recently doodled 3D with Google Sketchup for his bee keeping hobby!
I say we measure our active scene time and age in Sir Garbagetruck Units. By that measure, I am SGU-1 (still pretty old, I turn 45 this year).

26 years in the scene, only 5 of them inactive. I agree there are likely C64 sceners who have more active and total years.

And what is the average age of the demosceners nowadays, is the demoscene already an old man hobby?
As Gargaj said it is difficult to answer AntDude's question as the implied wording could appear dubious.

From a pure gerontologic aspect someone like Derbyshire Ram was born in 1939 and Wikipedia states "The demoscene's roots are in the home computer revolution of the late 1970s". These are the roots (phracking->cracking->BBS->demoscene) : Derbyshire Ram was thus 40 years old when "the demoscene roots appeared" and 46 years old when Amiga 500 appeared in 1985. So from 1985 where he was 46 years old, to 2007 when he died at age 68, he had noticed/live through 22 years of standard demoscene period. As Maali stated already, if I ask my 82 years-old mother to compose a demo score on her piano for a production submitted at next demoparty, would that make her the oldest active scener because stricly speaking it would fit your question's prequisites.

From a legitimacy aspect if the question is about, who has been the longest in the default demoscene period (because one can acknowledge there were already strong visual algorithmic exploration even dating back to prior times las proven by HAKEM in 1972), I personally have been in the demoscene since 1985 and am currently 45 years old, thus noticed/live through 30 years of standard demoscene period. I think I'm one of the oldest from that point of view as still submitting productions (active) but maybe not the oldest. Some people have been longer in the demoscene still and although they do not submit productions, they either idle on irc in #ascii or showcase themselves at demoparties.
I guess Baudsurfer means "when Amiga 1000 appeared in 1985".

As 1985 productions that could be somehow counted "demoscenish" (i would exclude crack intros here and would count those "letters" and musicdisks with some kind of interface and gfx instead) are very rare, it would be great if you could show some of yours, Baudsurfer. Or any productions, scrolltexts, affiliations etc. that mention you to begin with. Thanks in advance!

Middle-aged man hobby I suppose (mid-30s I'd put as mean on PC/web, older on 8/16-bit platforms), which shows in the kind and number of prods we see today.

tomaes: You mean, in a decade or two we can expect a flood of releases again?
I guess the definition of 'demoscener' itself is also vague.
I've owned a C64 since about 1984, and have been watching crack intros, trainers, letters, ripped music prods, and even 'demos' for about as long as I had them, because they appeared on every copied tape or disk.

But firstly, there wasn't a dedicated demoscene yet. And secondly, I wasn't actively participating in it, I was just consuming.

For me the question sounds like:
Who are the people who made the oldest known prods (as in: available here on Pouet, csdb or other sites), and are still/again active in the scene?
Granted, not necessarily to do with their age, more about their track record in the scene I suppose. But perhaps that is the more interesting question. Sort of like the 'founding fathers'.

One of the first names that comes to my mind is Mahoney. I've seen his name on C64 and Amiga at a very early stage. And he's still producing stuff :)

René: Pretty much. I hope it's more than just an oldschool/back-in-the-days/remakes circle jerk then. ;)

The oldest demoscener is Jesus Christ, as he put the spark in our hearts to create these divine creations!

If somebody was active in the scene in 1985 and 20 years old, this person must now be more than 50 years old. Probably there are some such people who still occasionally release something, although I do not know any examples.

Until the 90s the demoscene was a teenage movement. I do not believe that there are many scener over 45.
