Demos as school project

category: general [glöplog]

Hey Guys,

Long time! How is everyone?
Unfortunately, I have been really busy with absolutely no time for demo making :(

I did, however, had some time to volunteer to teach 9th graders programming. During the class, I'm focusing on graphics programming as I think it has the best effort/reward value. They have mostly learned Java and processing.

As part course the students have a project: A short processing real-time animation with sound. When the deadline reaches those prods are going to be displayed in a similar way to a demo party and in the end students actually vote for each prod.

There are about 5 projects, and most of them turned out quite cool.
Here is one for example

I'm posting here as I would like to hear your opinions regarding uploading the prods to pouet. On one hand all prods does not use original music and most of them are about 30 seconds long, but on the other hand I think that the students would really be interested in having your feedbacks...

So, what do you think guys?

i think the feedback will be mostly discouraging (especially for a 9th grader), so i wouldn't really bother.

the youtube example was pretty decent though :)

there are processing sketch sharing sites though, might be worth sharing there. just thinking out loud.

Many "real" demos from bigger events (like NV Scene) already struggle getting any feedback, so I don't know about 30s Processing sketches with probably mostly gaming memes and first-try stuff in them.

As mentioned by ps, there are dedicated processing sites out there to share those things, although direct feedback for anything not-so-mind-blowing will be scarce regardless.

not sure about pouet upload (negative feedback, bla, bla...), but I really like the example you've posted. I see true demoscener(s) potential here!
also, would be interested to see other examples if you decided to post them.

I recommend using the classrooms feature of openprocessing.org where your students can upload and comment on each other's prods instead of uploading them to pouet.

on a related note, I updated some old effects to run in processing.js / processing 2.2.1 in either javascript or java modes you might get a kick out of.
That aperture thing is fucking awesome. I'd much rather see this in a compo than most other things that usually go in compos.

You might be interested in the same kind of a thing for university students that was organized last summer here in Finland.

(I can send some feedback on these things, if something like that is wanted)

Thanks for the inputs.
I'll upload to youtube and post links here.

how about arts? ..

i can imagine everyone hyped to do a Font or Logo.
Here are the links of the top prods:

Everyones Gone To Aperture by Ilay and Jonatan
The Cage by Or
Tripping by Yonatan
Rock Box by Shahar

After posting here I got couple of emails with questions, so for those who want to know:
We started 8 month ago, when we started almost all students never written a single line of code. The lesson is 1.5 hours once a week, half is dedicated to theory and the other half is experiment/play time.

The year started with a Lightbot competition, from there we moved to block based programming, then we did Java script drawing and in the end we moved into processing.

For this project, I have supplied the students with a starter portable package containing processing, gnu rocket and some sample code. The portable part is really important as the students do not need to install it on their home computer. In the end, each student had his private disk-on-key with Processing, Rocket and his project.

Personally, I love the products of this project and I consider some of the prods to be really creative in terms of content and meaning.

I love this concept! Great job, this is an excellent way to teach practical multidisplinary problemsolving! I still consider myself very lucky for finding the demoscene.

Please continue update this thread with projects as they come along!

Maybe a bit offtopic, sorry, but this:

makes me sad! :/
There were times when everybody with a computer knew about the scene!

TLM/Preacher: Continue doing what you are doing! Hope many ppl will follow your approach of outreaching...maybe this will yield some few new sceners in the future! :)
I missed my trigonometry test in high school and fixed that by coding a stupid 2D tunnel in Turbo Pascal, teacher looking over my shoulder. Your shit is nice, use that talent.

My math teacher failed to understand the magic of 2D sin/cos plasmas. I wonder what she would have said to a 2D tunnel :)
I loved the top prod links, btw.

Really nice initiative. Although...

I remember being excited about finally getting computer class in 8th grade. Meanwhile, I did some 3d wavy surface effect from splats in TurboPascal+Asm (I was just about to discover scanline rasterization), some boot-loader showing an image before you enter MS-Dos, and some 3d isometric game I was working on with sprites, explosions etc... So I decided to show it to my teacher and what happened?
To my disappointment she not only didn't quite get it, she just proceeded with her script on me, which included "fun" stuff like copy&paste excercises to teach us how to use word processor, MS-Dos commands - imagine for full hour creating and removing directories, copying files etc... then finally a little bit of programming, which was introduction to LOGO and turtle graphics - as you can imagine, I wasn't jumping with excitement.
And now comes the tragic part: I did everything as told. Obviously exceeded greatly what my peers could deliver, but I didn't have much fun doing it.
You have to understand I was always a nice kid and decent, so I didn't even dare to criticize authorities. At the end she promised me that she will give me a better grade, but still under some conditions to write short elaboration on computer viruses for extra points.
To my defense: she was damn hot chick.

Now, when I hear you guys coming up with block-based programming, processing, some crappy tools made by you etc.. well - fair enough for average/slower minds, but at least I hope you don't enforce it and pay attention to brighter pupils that may have different needs.

great stuff.
and it's far beyond BITS quality, and they have prods on Pouet.

Back in '10, when I was an assistant to the graphics / OpenGL course in Helsinki University of Technology, an option for the course final project actually was to "make a demo and release it at Assembly".

Insofar as I know it, no-one ever did that.

tomkh: out of curiosity, which country are you in? I always thought that what you're describing happened only here in India......
