Capturing a demo-making process on twitch

category: offtopic [glöplog]
It was a nice stream ... maybe a bit too long. Looking forward to this demo. :)

Sadly not. Just noticed. I am reencoding the local video-capture for upload (3gb would take too long) and will upload the capture to YouTube later.

Yeah, your local copies will be much better encoding and will not have copyrighted audio muted, but the VODs have chat replay that help when chat is not displayed in the stream itself etc ... thanks for the efforts and I will try to catch the next stream
pixtur: i hope getting a headset soon will be before thursday ;) *hint hint*

weyland: i dont think twitch mutes copyright audio, it's youtube that does that.

weyland: or maybe twitch does also, but exports to youtube with the audio and it gets snuffed there aswell..

Twitch will automute parts of the the audio using a similar algo as YT when your stream is in 'past broadcasts' they will show up as red areas in the timeline, the algo is quite arbitrary and nobody really knows what songs are in it

BB Image
I was arranging and sequencing some music in Ableton with a tiny string motif from a Sony sample CD somewhere deep in the mix ... the whole stream got muted :)
Anwer to question 1.-5.: I prefer static text & images for a "making of"
Better use the time for the actual demo instead :)

@pixtur: I was on the stream yesterday for a short time. And I really liked it! Please announce when you continue!

@cupe: I think I had to drop that thought a while ago: That I need to be in a very specific and fragile state in order to be creative or work on a demo.

Of course I don't always get into a flow when I am working... that I can't really force. But I guess you always have to start running to try to get a runners high. Sometimes I get it. Sometimes I don't. :)

One of the tricks I sometimes do if I know I want to get back into working right the next day: I finish right in the middle of something that is really easy. Then the next day I can just pick that up and easily finish it. And once I have done that and feel I have finished a task, I quickly find something else to work on.
(I think I got this from "Zen in the art of writing" by Ray Bradbury - he always stops in the middle of a sentence when he finishes work and commences right there the next day.)

But sometimes when I work I still got all these other things in my head and I can't concentrate and want to switch to other things all the time. Then the techniques mentioned in this episode of "note to self": http://www.wnyc.org/story/infomagical-bootcamp are quite helpful.

One of them is: Write everything down you think you need to do. Prioritize. Then do one thing. Single tasking. It's hard but it works. :)

And if all of this doesn't work, but I really need to finish, but I can't. I take my laptop and go somewhere without any distractions. In that other environment and with only that one task in my head it becomes really easy to focus. :)

When it comes to motivation, I find creativity during streaming to invoke some inner Bob Ross where I just find myself explaining what I am doing and thinking about random things to show off while making them part of it.
With level design, it's very similar to "Let's add some happy little wall trims here"

Kinda helps to talk a bit about it and have "reading replies on demand" glances in the chat instead of abrupt interruptions, as strange as it might sound.

psenough summed up pretty well what to check for.

What issues did you have with your microphone btw?
OBS Studio for example has noise filtering & gain which you can add, really helps.

Although, like I said before, if you're using some cheap $5 microphone (or laptop built in), you should get something more decent. ~$20 should get you some entry level logitech USB microphone and for $70 you can get something like the blue snowball, which I use. Should be able to run in to one for pretty cheap second hand as I've seen a lot of stream monsters lately upgrading to a yeti or similar (way more expensive).

Handy not just for streaming but I do a lot of skype calls too.

@pixtur: Looking forward to seeing the capture!

here is the capture of the first part: YouTube

as noted before, the audio-quality is very poor. This is because I was working on my MacBookPro with bootcamp and the external mic was not working. The internal mic is close to the GPU fan that was spinning like crazy...

The new mic should arrive today, so I can continue, maybe tonight.

It's always a pleasure to see someone using Total Commander in "nostalgia" colors. :-)

Sorry for spamming: I got a new mic and will continue to work on my little demo in a couple of minutes. Probably will do some simple shader coding and more animation. Let's see where this leads.

Fuck, missed it. Hope the video will come to YouTube, too.

@gaspode: I learned that there is a direct connection between Twitch and YouTube, so it's uploading it directly from twitch now. I have no idea how good the quality is, though. I have a local 2GB recording sitting on my hard drive, if things are too horrible to read.

btw: I say a thing or two about how to write a simple shader with tooll_io

pixtur: i been doing exports of all my streams, which are usually at 720p on twitch, and they seem ok exported on youtube once they are done processing to the higher resolutions.

I had a go at it yesterday, and OBS, 2x downscale of the screen + 1000 bitrate setting for the video seemed to work on my terrible uplink. Used youtube for streaming.

Loving the streams so far, been keeping up to date with the copies on Youtube. Thanks for this pixtur. Thumbs up mate.

Bump!

@pixtur: this is very cool. Although I haven't seen your video since probably October, I hope that you haven't abandoned this streaming action for good.

Also, I know that Ferris also started to stream demoscene stuff recently: Twitch and Youtube playlist. So far he covered toolchains and inner workings his latest logicoma and elix demos, which was very insightful for me.

And a shameless plug: I also started streaming a few weeks ago. Although I am at best mediocre (and disorganized), and 80% of my streams are in Russian, I still think there's some value at least for beginners there, so: Twitch and a yt playlist for an onging 4k project.

I wonder if there are more.

So before you all think you're Ferris or Pixtur, think thrice if you're worth watching and have the sort of blend between smarts and communication that makes at least the former get his message across.

people can become better of what they do.
it's called sometimes... working on it until you master it.
