UE4 engine vs. rendering quality of demos

category: general [glöplog]
omfg.... what were they thinking.... didn't even take the time to remove the splash page... i guess if they didn't it would be even worse
that demo would have been much more impressive if they'd done the work themselves, rather than just clicking the "bouncy castle" and "people having a party inside the Abenteuerhalle Kalk" buttons in Unity

and damn that rendering quality is amazing!
If it looks like crap and doesn't show anything interesting, then who cares if it's a "custom engine". You had 200 megs space to use and all you came up with was a custom engine??? There are enough demos where the only merit is a custom engine. I want demo compos totally saturated with UE4 and Unity demos now.

I think artists and musicians are generally pretty good at policing their disciplines for ripped content, but with coding it's a very tricky balance to strike since pretty much everything except your 256b prods import a bunch of code that someone else wrote.

Many demos have been created with off-the-shelf tools and engines. If your area is UE4 then fine: show us what you can do in UE4, just as others have shown what they can do in a web browser, or with werkkzeug, or whatever. The more UE4 and Unity demos we see, the better we'll get at recognising them for what they are and judging them accordingly.

The problem comes when you're competing for prizes at parties. You want a level playing field, and demo2 should probably not have been thrown in with everyone else because it was so clearly deceptive to anyone with a trained eye. I still think it's a well edited piece with a massive track, but it's not legit for a competition because it went out of its way to hide the tech it was using and presented its models and mocap as if they were created by the group, which they were not. They should have let them had their trolly crowd-pleasy fun, and then trolled them back by disqualifying it.

And by "trained eye" I mean able to notice how super pro quality mocapped dancing robots don't belong in a demo that also features a revolving torus and a man doing backflips off various poo-coloured terrain meshes.

It is still a nice prod tho. I like how it annoys everyone.

yeah, there is no way to find out other than looking into DLLs, I got decieved too once, and even gave thumb-up by mistake :|

So, you thought that "MADE WITH UNITY" at the very beginning can mean something different from "MADE" and "WITH" and "UNITY"?! Had to check with DLLs indeed...

introspec: yeah, I turned it off and didn't pay attention, maybe was just sipping some coffee or smth for the first 2 seconds thinking it will be boring loading screen, can happen, no? ;P

Kinda illustrates how informed your opinions are.

I know that some of you will never want to forgive me, and others will just think (or maybe even post) "who cares?". But still.

Well. After all polemic that I unfortunately helped to transform into a little war, with the aggravating of posting very harsh words, yet, while under alcohol influence...

I took two important decisions in my life. The first one is that I stopped drinking alcohol. Seriously. I can't handle alcohol. I never could. Second, I honestly believe that in some way, we that are against the usage of readily available resources to compete in compos are, well, sorry guys, wrong.

I will refer to "me" from now on, as I can only talk for myself.

No no no, please, I am not fearing retaliations, I just spent a few hours reading many of the related posts and threads, and in the end I am sincerely convinced that I was, indeed, in a way, wrong.

Is it really a crime to use any of the available engines out there? Well, lets face it, it is not a crime at all. And eventually, truly beautiful prods might appear, even with some innovations in them. I should not be against that, it is a new era with new views coming.

As others said already, everyone should be welcome. If they don't do a good work, then the audience will decide, as they feel like.

My personal decisions (for example, to always try creating yet another engine, or like I very aggressively said -- to spend a decade sharpening my skills) are not excuses to directly attack other people. I feel really, sincerely sorry for that. It was a grave error, and I honestly apologize (again).

Is it beautiful to see a prod where the guy(s) spent a lot of effort writing a custom engine from scratch? It is, of course. I am one that will always appreciate that. I like to create engines myself, I love that. Not everyone is, in fact, obligated to notice, appreciate and give so much importance to the technical achievements. I can't try to enforce people to think like I do, that is just wrong and against freedom.

Also, as I later on remembered, I am not exactly the owner of the demoscene. =)

Now, imho, sober and honest in what I am saying, I don't think there is a real need to create yet another category, or to thumb down prods because they are using Unity/Unreal/whatever. The demos category seems to be for that, actually. It is life free fight, or free racing category. Use whatever you can to win, as long as it is realtime. The size limited categories like 64k and below are for the others who like more that style. What is the problem then? I was just behaving like a grumpy old man, and I assume that.

So, I decided to also come in public and tell that I changed my mind. I am eating my own words. And I am sorry for attacking some of you. Just hope that, with enough time, you can also forgive me for that.

Love you all. Have fun.

I linked that video to show the crowd reaction for when the "Unity" logo appears, there was the same reaction for Zarahustler, even though its not that audible in the capture the majority of the crowd is booing at it. So to everyone fearing game engines taking over the scene because the crowd doesn't care or is fooled, come to a party like revision and see/hear for yourself.

imerso is a chill dude
Some demosceners are booing today, but tomorrow it will be accepted norm. For example: Jugz new teaser is rather cool.
Why write a new boilerplate over and over again if you can use one that is well-maintained and cross-compatible and focus on actual effects (actually in both coding and artistic side).
The only thing left really is kind of ideological/political side of it. But then again, demoscene always was kind of commercial, and never really followed any of the FSF principles etc..., so maybe all this hypocrisy is not really in place. Another example: let's look at browser-based demos - browsers nowadays are kindly backed up by big companies too (and trust me, I was there and was even writing my own browser with 3d features before WebGL, but then, it was too much work, so I stopped).
Personally, I just stay with intros and I am happy about that, so I don't even care. Things are alright. Peace!

EPIC MEGAGAMES KILLED THE DEMOSCENE

Best of luck with that, I hope it's good for you.

In case someone forgot why most of us are in the demoscene to begin with.

also, while you lads keep kerfuffling about whatever it is you find important we as poo-brain will be making demos with our friends in 3rd party engines and our own engines and whatever else we find interesting cause we just want to make stuff together and show it to our friends!

I'm with okkie on this one. Every platform and engine and whatever are free game for demos.

So if you are a Unity or UE4 contributor, are you allowed to use it for demos because it's your own engine?
