We're working on that as I type, getting a mailing list set up and preparing information to be sent out to all juror applicants.

Generally, you can assume you were taken unless urs holds a personal grudge against you, and I don't believe he's even able to hold grudges ;)

a bunch of usual/traditional categories as kinda fixed ones sounds like a nice idea since they will be submitted anyways along with the others. this years list of categories is quite nice :D

demoscene award without a demo award ^^ nice concept :) :)

I think these two comments right after each other are interesting - people have different investments, and everyone's gonna view changes that they find preferable more favorably than others who used to have a focus on their work and they no longer do. And I guess that's normal.

With that all said, I'm strongly with NTSC on this one - the fact that "Best Demo" apparently just never came up as a suggestion, neither is it part of the default ones (and - I guess while we're at personal investment - that the closest thing to a "Best 64k" category is such a Frankenstein abomination) is pretty tragic from many perspectives.

Either tragic, or everyone just assumed "this is so popular, someone is going to enter it for sure."
@Saga: Yeah, same thoughts here. When you submit a category you think of new unusual categories ... not the standard stuff.

Apart from that I think it would be better if there were 5 standard categories and 5 for category-submissions. 3 spanning over the three pillars of demoscene: Best code, Best music, Best graphics. Best demo as the 4th and overall category. Plus Public Choice. And the rest is open for submissions.

CATEGORIES FINALIZED

Our jury has deliberated long and hard, and we have finally settled on a set of twelve award categories. This year, we are going to nominate and award productions in the categories of:

  • Best Direction
  • That's Not Possible On This Platform!
  • Best High-End 4K Intro
  • Best Storytelling / Storyline / Plot
  • Interactive
  • Best Freestyle Graphics
  • Best Low-End Intro
  • Best Soundtrack
  • Best Low-End Demo
  • Best High-End Demo
  • New Talent
  • Public Choice

Over the course of the next weeks, our jurors will wade through last year's productions and choose up to five nominees for each category. And you can help them by making sure your personal favorites are not overlooked! As of right now, you can head over to https://2017.meteoriks.org/taking_part/recommend and suggest productions for consideration in a category.

Big thanks to all who submitted category proposals or volunteered to be jurors! We couldn't do this without you!

PUBLIC CHOICE VOTING OPEN

Also, just like every year we have one category where YOU are the jury! The winning production in the Public Choice category is purely determined by your votes, so head on over to https://2017.meteoriks.org/taking_part/public_choice and make your selection! The voting deadline is Monday, March 20, 23:59, so vote today!

See, this is the one-time chance for 64k to beat the crap out of bigger demos in the High-End Demo category.

Just to place this directly in the thread (thanks teo):

What are you guys thinking? So -- you're excluding the most exciting category of demoscene prods of the entirety of 2016 (wat), to make place for nonsense categories like "best storyline" (huh), "interactive" (...just.. huh?), and "new talent" (basically the category we desperately searched for candidates for back in the Scene.org Awards days, without much luck..).

So, yeah.. what are you guys thinking?

Hey, at least Everyway'll get its prize in the oldschool category. :)
Been waiting for that new talent / breakthrough performance nomination for 7-10 years, still waiting. Maybe this year, or next year? At least it keeps me doing demos.

And, just to point that out as well: your award ceremony is named after someone who was famous in the scene for making 64k intros.
added on the 2017-03-01 10:11:37 by gloom gloom
And nobody talks about the PC 8k intros.

I'm a bit sad that "tiny intro" didn't make it but ... no 64k as well? Come on

On the other hand: a 64k award would not bring anyone any benefit.

All 64k authors this last year, including us, know that our releases were quite well recieved (to say the least). And winning one more award for it... who cares?

But putting 64ks in the same category as demos here gives the opportunity to value the works in a different light: If a 64k wins that category against all other demos, that *really* feels like a new achievement: Having managed to beat even the size-unlimited ones. I feel with last year's 64ks, that is a definite possibility.

And if a big demo wins afterall, well, we just have to try harder next year.

i really dont get the meteoriks. it seems so self indulgent, like the priority is the audience feeling involved and the jury having a good time. it doesnt seem to be about doing the hard job of actually being an awards and giving recognition to good shit at all. but what do i know. :)

rather feels like not giving a fuck about demos.

As someone who spent a lot of time last year working very hard to even be a part of this list, I'd by lying if I didn't say I'm not at least a little bit disappointed. And I'm sure the 8k folks certainly feel the same.

I'm with teo on this one; these two categories have extremely different technological constraints (that's kindof the fucking point), which is why we have specific compos and categories in the first place. Categories like "public's choice" are meant for comparing overall impact, where various categories hone in on specific details and nuances that are unique amongst a smaller subset of productions. Without specific 64k/8k categories, that gives these prods one less leg to stand on. Relying on other categories to fill in that blank doesn't make any sense, and at its worst, only excludes _other_ productions that may have been there instead, while a massive 64k/8k could get the recognition they deserve in their own category.

While I want to agree in principle, I certainly would've loved to at least be nominated in such a category, among other folks (like you) I really respect and look up to. :)

And it's especially frustrating knowing how hard it was to pull off our 64k at least (and realistically that was one of the smaller-scoped 64k's on that list), while as far as I can tell only one of these even had a custom synth. And I don't mean to undermine their effort (there's some fabulous stuff there), but more to make a point like "why do they get a category and we don't" ? (and again, _insert something 8k-related here, for example, a category perhaps?_)

That said, this is also _extremely_ valid:

Not just because I agree branch specifically needs one of these, but also because when I was starting out around here that was an award I really wanted to get nominated for as well! So props for still including such a category, but frankly I think the lack of high-end 64k and 8k specific categories (or even a high-end intro category ffs) is a _huge_ oversight.

was not meant to imply branch is just starting out, but more to make a point that this was also a very important category for me at one point. :)

I wonder what Meaty would have thought of this list.. he was pretty vocal when Assembly dropped the 64k intro category.

This comment is super disrespectful towards the other categories you proposed, it seems that it all doesn't matter, good productions already had enough praise, lets just look at some fun stuff from last year and give it an award!

I'm with Smash, the show is fun to watch and I love all involved, but it has no merit as an actual serious award show.
