An "8 bit" CPU/computer built by simple logic. Some purpose driven chips used but none of them which I don't know how they work on the inside- I could have used transistors. Long learning curve, 1.5 year project and lots of bugs and frustration.

Each byte in ram is 4bit instruction & 4 bit data. 8 bit data can be used for registrers and output. Basicly just supports add, sub, jmp, hlt and move stuff to regs or memory. 16 byte memory including data. ALU has direct connection to registers for easy access.

Can easily be improved in 100s of ways but the goal of the thing was to learn how a computer work down at the bones. How a data bus works, how the inner workings of registers etc work. I think I've achieved that and more.

Runs at a marvelous 5kHz tops which is well enough. You want to step through the instructions to really learn how it works. Should be able to run shy of 1 Mhz if you push it but there isn't really a reason for it :-)

At first I followed Ben Eater on youtube to learn about these things but things fell into place pretty fast after a while and I was able to make most of it of my own designs. Fun stuff!

Looks awesome! - those PCB's did you design them or were able to buy them as is ?

No problem. I've spent probably 500€ on ordering parts the last year and a half. Of course that means I have at least twice as many parts as I need now because some stuff is a lot cheaper when you buy 25 or 50 of something. How much the parts for the machine costs if you'd slim it down? No idea. 100-200? What costs more are switches, boards, segment displays etc.. the ic's and transistors and stuff is real cheap.
