Suggestion - "New" kind of Gfx Compo on demoparties

category: general [glöplog]

Just a little suggestion from me - please discuss this.

www.higher-lyrics.de/demoscene/scene.html

Real-time graphic design competition in the web browser using WebGl - mainly aimed at graphic artists. of course not limited to that.

think about it: Artists who model in VR with Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, or
draw in any other 2D / 2.5D / 3D tool could achieve a bigger experience in a Gfx Compo instead of just entering a compo with renderings or still images or 2d pixel art.

and for those who care ;) -> it´s realtime

Keywords & tools for this are:

pbr (physical based rendering)
Zbrush
SculptGL
marmoset toolbag
substance painter
Blender
three. js
web-gl
voxel

I for my part would be very happy about the possibility to have something like this and it could expand the competitions.

kind regards

cosmic / ollie
a realtime design compo for artists.. sounds a bit like this *cough* https://www.notch.one/support/forums/topic/announcement-notchmeister-001-audio-reactive-effects-competition/ *cough*
</hijack>

But i guess youre talking more about a focus on actual modelling and texturing but rendering the output in realtime?

what about stuff made in quill / tiltbrush?

let's stay on topic here :)
for creating 3d in VR i recommend:

i saw VR-based 3D pictionary on Dutch TV done by absolute celebrity morons, so, yeah might be fun to watch with someone who can actually draw. give an artist ~5 minutes to draw something live, see it coming together on the big screen, extra bonus if the artist is standing in the corner waving randomly in the air :)
Maybe just do it like the live coding battles?

So basically the live gfx compo from Solskogen, then?

I like the idea. It's a real modelling compo, not just a "model and render it" thingy, as far as i understood cosmic.

yeah, but for a finished scene (e.g. that EEVEE thing or showing it in marmoset) it isn't really adding much.. you could just as well prepare a video of your scene.
As far as experimenting with new compo formats go, I don't think you can go wrong.. worst thing that can happen is you don't repeat the compo =)

Tiltbrush compo.. would be so totally awesome. I might even use the word "rad".

Hello everyone and thank you very much for your thoughts.

The approach to doing something like the live shader competition at a demo party is definitely a good thing.

which tool and / or which system to use depends on how many people have something like this at home to practice and then create something useful on stage. So that it's not just a fun action.

Which wouldn't be wrong.

That would be one thing. Another one and what I thought - you're all at the under construction demoparty - I wanted to submit a picture as remote entry to the modern tools gfx compo. as you all know only image files are accepted.

Right now I'm experimenting with tools like marmoset and I like the thing.
that you can write out 2 files with it, which you can then view in the web browser.

In such a case, the Modern Tools Gfx Compo would only have to be "extended". For this / or other file formats. This would have to be decided by the organizers if this would come into question for them without humming them more work.

I like the site sketchfab.

there / or also with marmoset / you can switch the post effects on or off / view the textures and the corresponding uv layout - the individual textures like metallness, roughness, emissive layers etc. painting / texturing skills etc.

also things like work steps that you always have to submit could be dropped.

and there would be no disadvantage to anyone who submits a "only" 2d graphic. Anyone would and could
that could be completely separated.

everyone would understand the difference and would be able to rate it accordingly.

And! think about it: you could put the 3D data into a zip file and if someone wanted to use them in their demo - why not?

I mean, it's called "modern tools graphics competition" - I'm a graphic artist and use the modern tools available to me.

There is nothing to be said against photoshop, painter, renderings etc. but if you have the possibility to put yourself in the scene with your vr glasses and look at yourself from there. Then this would be such a much nicer result than just making a movie of it.

The artist could represent the real scaling as he or she imagined it - and the experience.
a lot more "epic" than just a movie, as I said before.

Again, thank you for your thoughts - maybe there will be something like that in the future ?

kind regards,

ollie
omg sorry for the crappy translation :)
I like it reminds me 3D graffiti art... Any tool for PS VR (there is PC driver).Playstation VR is cheaper than Oculus.And I can buy it in any hypermarket in the world...

I'm totally with cosmicollie here.

While demo compo implies animation and music, possibly custom code :P, modern graphics should work for a cool looking model.

A still image only shows so much, and is much easier raised to the next level with a quick and dirty paint over.

Proving you can make something look great from all angles is an extra skill that is going underappreciated.

So yeah! modern graphics should allow (high resolution) turntables rendered in marmoset or similar.
Trevor, thanks for bumping this. I still think it's a great idea and would vote for it.

I had more than a lot of fun when i had the chance to do this once...

...so even me, as a coder and non-graphician, would love to have such a competition!

So is there anyone else who would enter this compo? Like, aside from OP.

Not something I'd enter, but I fully approve of a more modern gfx compo. Standard photoshop paint stuff, textured models and such, perhaps even short animation cycles?

No idea if it'd work as a separate compo, but does it need to? These are just all modern types of graphics.

I know a couple of people who've been wanting to do something like this...

Well it depends on what "this compo" actually is:

- live modeling compo
- live VR modeling compo
- 3d model compo

The only problem I see here is in creating a level playing field for anything but the VR modeling compo, if you allow tools of choice some may be at a disadvantage for not having access to some toolset thats objectively more powerful, on the other hand when forcing f.e. blender on to people you risk alienating Maya and zBrush users.

That being said I'd be down for participating in any of those potential compos, even if that means that I'll have to get my ol' totally (not) legit copy of Lightwave 7 out and compete(read loose) against someone using current day modeling and texturing tools. Then again if anything's allowed I might just render a few different angles and do a paintover in photoshop to finish it up.

I'm just in favor of adding (realtime) turntables to modern graphics :)

It's hard to set the limit of what you can photoshop on top so I'd merge it.
I guess if you photoshop on top of a model it's more like how most modern concept art is done anyways.

So just the ability to show off 3D scales fairly, while losing the cheat of a fixed camera point and having to do actual plausible lighting and spend more time etc. you get to show a 3D piece in it's full stunning capability!
I do like the sound of it and would watch the compo, but probably not participate.

also: it sounds a little like it might be a "making a portfolio piece for a games job" compo :)

@TropicalTrevor

spot on. that´s exactly what i mean. even from a non gfx artist point of
view this could be interesting. just an idea: a programmer creates a scene with
code and then tweak / overpaint it - like @LJ said and then put it in a „realtime viewer“
- light it - play with it - use it with vr goggles etc. etc.

@pro

thank you my friend

@hardy

you are more of a gfx artist than you might think ;)

@Gargaj

thank you for your comment. of course this makes no sense if there aren´t enough people
who are interested or participating. but let´s see what happens.

@psonice

abolutely. „just“ thinking about extending the modern gfx compo with new tools - i´d love that.

@Parzival

cool. please tell them and ask them if they would like to do something for such a compo.
i mean there are a lot of people out there already working that way. why not the demoscene ?

https://www.artstation.com/search?q=marmoset&sorting=recent

@LJ

thank you for being into this discussion. there is nothing to say against live modelling / sculpting / fun
compos whatever. i thought more of a „working on a piece - @home or @ a party -> releasing it in a
format that eg. runs in a browser. limited to that features this format has.

everything is combinable - sculpting / modelling in a 3dpackage - 3d models generated with code.

as you said - i would not limit such a compo to tools

imo there are no "more powerful" or "less powerful" tools - in the end they are just tools right ? i would just suggest to limit it to a" format".

@farfar

why not ? you could also use this:

https://ephtracy.github.io and be creative with it.

and you´re right haha :) but why not ? with this marmoset viewer 3d models could also be integrated into a website. which could be used and maybe interesting eg on such sites like the bitfellas artcity gallery.

please keep this discussion running.

cheers, ollie
I don't think I have time to make something for that kind of compo, but maybe I'm mistaken.
Thanks for the link(s), that looks very cool.. (and I meant what I said to sound positive.. :D)
