demos ? Why ?

category: general [glöplog]
Some do demos for technological demonstration.
Some do it for the fun.
Some for...

Don't said demos are useless :
they aren't as you don't do them for nothing, you're not stupid.

So :

1/ Plz explain your own reason for demomaking
2/ Plz what the aim of demos for you ?

Fun! Pure fun! I will never make a demo that isn't fun unless I'm being paid for it. Life is too short to waste taking the scene seriously.
So :

1/ Plz explain your own reason for asking this
2/ Plz what the aim of this question for you ?

it's time to turn on the p01 script...

rmeht:

1/ As there is several guys on the scene and as everybody comes to the scene for one reason, I ask myself if others have or had the same reason as me.
And I'm curious to compare and see the source of scene's attraction of most sceners. I would also see what attract musician / gfx / coders /... to the scene.

2/ My aim by the question "what the aim of demos ?" is to understand the messages sceners want to give us in demos. But I would like to see others saying "what a demo is done for, what is their meaning ?".

Yes it's really metaphysical questions.
Good to meditate and to learn a lot from ourselves.
So plz answer.

People say they make demos for fun. What do they mean by this? I think the joy of demomaking comes on two levels.

First, making art is an enjoyable way to spend time. Sometimes, watching television feels too lethargic, and and chilling out seems too pointless. Too avoid the boredom, we sit down and make demos. It is a pleasant way to pass the hours, and we develop useful creative skills at the same time.

Of course, this cannot be the only explanation. After all, sceners put lots of sleepless nights and hard work into their demos. They travel hundreds of kilometers to visit parties and meet with other sceners. For a true scener, demos are much more than a pleasant way to spend time.

In The Prince, Nicolo Machiavelli explains that dignity is a basic human need. People value their dignity and social acceptance as much as they value time, money, and health. Demomaking, I believe, is a way to satisfy this basic human desire. Finishing a sucessful demo gives an incredible feeling of satisfaction as you see others watch and appreciate it. I cannot describe what it's like to place well in a competition or get lots of thumbs up on your production; you must experience it for yourself.

People make demos, then, because they want the acceptance of their peers. We want dignity and respect in the demoscene commnity; we want to be elite. To obtain this coveted status, we cater to the tastes and desires of other sceners, rather than the general public. Distributing a million copies of a demo is not as important as gaining the admiration of the few thousand sceners.
