Great demo compo!
Quite possibly the best PC demo compo ever.

Heh boozembly had this year bigscreen, from pico projector or such, worked great when it got dark. Anyway, really fun bzm this year, I didnt attend asm...

Good compos, hope Orange wins :D

met and talked to a lot of nice people, drank a lot of beer! asm and especially bzm have been fantastic!
will help cleaning up the bzm hills sometime after the pricegiving.

and yea..... bzm seem to evolve, having the tiny beamer and good audio was very good!
... maybe oldschool compos at bzm next year? :D

Too bad the oldschool demos was such small quantity at Assembly this year .

Big thanks to organizers!

I heard that there was really no jury, at least in the intro compos? It seemed that some substantial entries were placed surprisingly early in the entry ordering, which was a bit of a let-down. The order wasn't completely random at all so maybe there was just one "juror"? I know it's "boring" if the compo follows an upward excitement curve (with maybe one or two of the jury's highest-ranking entries placed somewhere in the middle), but it's really the proper way to do it, and that's what everyone expects these days.

I think there should be no particular order to keep the excitement even and unpredictable, with exception to maybe slightly bias and have really superb productions in the end, but that's just matter of an opinion.

The order of 1K compo really didn't matter as the compo quality wasn't that high and 90% of the entries were anyway almost in the same level. In 4K compo there was a bit more "order randomness".

It was the 4k compo in particular that raised the question. But anyway, a jury might be a good idea.

What comes to the 1k compo's quality, I didn't understand the complaining at all. Can you point out the presumably dozens of significantly higher quality entries from the past 5 years?

Compos are often late for various reasons but if the demo compo is scheduled to start at the midnight (which is already a rather late time to start) it should not be over one hour late because of CS (an esports game). I heard that on the Sunday evening it was difficult to keep up with the schedule since more than one game continued on extra time due to tournament rules that allow this to happen. Some solution should be found for this issue.
I think, if there had been one final "killer entry", it would have raised the overall feeling of the whole compo to another level. A compo feels to me like a music album, you need many different kinds of "songs" and every entry has a role in the drama. (I only realized this compo vs music album analogy yesterday when talking with people at bzm)

Lower-quality compofillers are also important not only to make the compo feel more like a significant event, but also for the whole scene's development. People have to feel like, "I think I know how this is done, and I could it do better, or do something that beats this". The number of entries gives significance to the doing-it-better. The more entries there are, the bigger your achievement is if you win.

On the oldskool PC, can this happen ... how to get people to understand what they see and how to get them to care so they would go like "I could do better". Quality only comes after quantity. (And I didn't even make a joke scroller to the said compo, this year so ...)

In my mind compo quality isn't high if there's nothing truly interesting or audio/visually pleasing there; top 2 were nice tho. General MIDI and coder colors / lack of direction just don't do the trick for me usually.

Ok, then again you liked the space station and burning orange turd in the winner 4k, which I thought were hideous coder color and coder object stuff. You can only argue about subjective things.

But hey, some 1k entries had a very nice piano sound. ;) Huge advances in tiny synths. Acoustic piano is one of the most difficult things to synthesize in a credible way, and now they did it in only 1k size. And snare drums and cymbals and everything, big props. </sarcasm>

Order was mostly picked by me. I generally try to aim to put on a good show and have a bit of fluctuation with entries rather than a predictable linear curve. This will result in some entries being paced a bit around but i strongly believe it makes for a more entertaining viewing when you have a few good ones mixed in.
I still try to follow a somewhat linear curve but have a few odd spikes in between that can re-ignite the flow a bit. Just like that album example.
I have used this philosophy in many other parties and I think the showings have been well received.
So yes. There is thought behind the order and not just randomzied for the sake of doing it

I think that's a very good way to do a compo, and you did a good job as a show master. It was just that many people seemed expected different and thought that there has been a jury like before etc. I heard the comment "why was this played so early, what did the jury think was wrong with it" many times. But the whole idea was different, not based on jury points.

Anyhow a great party, good compos, seminars, scene lounge and many sceners attending - Assembly is alive!!

I remember an assembly a couple of years back, where the compos were indeed shown in random order. It was bad.

When two of the big potential winners were shown in the first third of the compo, the rest of it just seemed to drag itself along endlessly. After CNCD and ASD, it's really hard to watch half an hour of beginner prods.

Just keep it as it is.

I was a really fun party, even if I didn't have any entries except in the Tuplain compo. But sometimes it's good to stress over party program content instead of entries.

Hope everyone enjoyed the 8-bit programming seminar, VJ set and 2600 demoshow (with the appropriate modern video pipeline glitches because that's the rule of the land) instead of a compo entry :)
