Turn off YouTube ads, please

category: general [glöplog]
Now that YouTube is rolling out nonskippable ads to all, I would like to suggest that demoscene channels turn off ads altogether, esp. if the channel maintainers are not the original creators of the content that they are sharing.

Are you saying the ads are interrupting the middle of demos? If so, I agree, that's a no-no.

In before the mandatory "Youtube has ads?", never seen one using one of my own PCs.

But seriously though, totally agreed. This stands even without the ads being nonskippable TBH. Selling disks by PD dealers without the consent of demo authors was frowned upon back in the day, why should this be any different?

+1 for noname

Agree 100%. It's fine for your own prods, but don't be a dick and monetize the work of other people without their explicit permission.

Maybe we should all start to monetize our own demos, in the same way that music videos are monetized on YouTube. I mean, with the automatic music detection and all that shit. That way we could choose to take down those ripoffs or force then to share their cents with us.

I will do it the day that demoscene's music become popular. :]

Anyway, noname is right. Ads on demoscene channels are not cool.

I suppose 'has ads' is a valid reason to replace an extra link to youtube?
So basically if I see a youtube video linked here has ads it's fine to send a request to update it if there's another video on youtube without ads?

I would say so, yes.

when the soundtracks of the demos are being distributed on digital distribution platforms with agreements with youtube, you get automatic copyright notifications with ads that revert to that entity. the only option the channel owner has is to either remove the audio or make the video private. no option to turn off ads. you can only control ads on your 100% original content.

Yeah but are they? Did someone put Hideous Mutant Freaks on Spotify?
added on the 2018-08-29 19:24:52 by Gargaj Gargaj
don't know, i would guess not but only the channel owner knows for sure if that ad was placed there by him or automatically placed by a copyright notification.

you can't put tracks directly on spotify btw, you need to upload them to a digital distributor with a deal with spotify, they need to also have a deal with youtube. so it's possible to have a track on spotify and not being under copyright on youtube and vice-versa.

you can however upload your own content to your own youtube and claim it as original. and it will trigger copyright notifications to other youtube channels using same identified content.

youtube claims you get less revenue then from being represented by a digital distribution company though. which is why most bands and labels still prefer to let a digital distributor be the middle man with youtube.

One of the yt capture I once uploaded has exactly this problem, I did not choose to put ads in front of it, the "copyright holder" did. I guess its because of the intro music but Im pretty sure it happens with other videos as well as long as some algorithm thinks its close enough to a copyrighted song or video.
Having that said, isnt this a great way to push people to watch the binary instead of the video? 100% Ad-Free!
(uh oh, I see a prank coming up at the next party...)

It's either that - or - slighly playing devils advocate here (as I'm also no fan of ads) but why not ensure that any ad revenue from watching demos goes to Scamp for use on his funding the untergrund.net server that we all make use of ?

Just a thought.

Algorithm invented a brilliant anti-youtube system: put a porn video in your prod! Might be difficult for 4k intros though.

I think that's just as bad as stopping the video to play an ad.

Ever since I was forced to take off AdBlock Plus, I've had to put up with this popup crap on YouTube. I was happily using ABP for years, but more and more sites are pressuring me to "whitelist" them, and what caused me to take it off was that certain websites were loading with plain text only (including Pouet), rendering them all but useless.

But the issue here is, of course, preventing channels from monetising the demo videos in the first place. What we need is a dedicated site for demo videos. Maybe bring back Demoscene.tv?

Adblock Latitude (ABP spinoff for Pale Moon) or Ublock Origin, or a combination of the two plus the obligatory NoScript .. still works fine for blocking all ads on YT.

Did demoscene.tv use streaming software?

someone asked me what´s the problem on facebook, this was my answer: (maybe helps others that don´t get it)
Quote:

the whole point of this thread has deep roots in the demoscene!
we make the demos for free, free for everyone to watch! we dont earn anything on all our time-investment. and back in time there were PD-distributors asking for money for demos! so we disallowed them to do so, so that everyone could continue watching demos for free. and now people want to make money off our hard work again, while we still dont. but thats not the real problem...the real problem with this is that the adverts are on top of the demo itself, so one cant see 100% of the demo! also it distracts from the experience, which is only a few minutes anyway, so distracting it for a few seconds may completely destroy the experience! 😉

i am totally fine with youtube trying to get some money to pay their servers btw. just the way the ads get shown are a bad choice...if it wouldn´t be on top of actual video-content noone would have a problem with it i guess...on start of video, unskippable would be best...so almost just as it was before! i already stopped watching tv because of the same stupid ad-banners on top of the movie, which i can´t see completely this way!
Yeah why not just use Ad block ?

Because that doesn't solve the problem of:
1) Revenue made off other people's content.
2) Creation spoiled with ugly ads for all viewers.
