Demoscene panel at SIGGRAPH Asia 2018 - Call for speakers

category: general [glöplog]

Hello all,

Are there demoscene related people attending SIGGRAPH Asia 2018?

If you're coming to the conference this December, or if you know sceners (or ex-sceners) who are coming, I invite you to contact me rapidly.

I'm looking for people who will attend the conference and who would be interested in participating to a panel on the demoscene. The format, "Birds of a Feather", is fairly open and becomes what we make of it. Last Summer during SIGGRAPH 2018 at Vancouver, we had such a session and it was really successful (we had to close the conference room doors and turn away a lot of people, as can be heard on the recorded video).

In general I've heard people of the graphics community express their curiosity and interest in hearing more about that demoscene thing, so it's a good opportunity for sharing.

Bumping this to the front page for awareness.

Perhaps it's worth noting that it's a few days after TDF?

Thank you, it is indeed:

  1. lTokyo Demo Fest will take place on December 1st and 2nd (Saturday and Sunday),
  2. then SIGGRAPH Asia will take place from December 4th to 7th (Tuesday to Friday).

They both take place in Tokyo. In fact they are technically in the same district (Chiyoda). So you can attend both and rest on the Monday in between.

I am contemplating visiting both TDF and SIGGRAPH (or more like trying to make it happen {multiple-entry Japan visa: check}).

I'm also not sure I can be of any substantial help: I'm not a graphics programmer professionally, and only can say things like 'demoscene is awesome; also shaders', and probably perform some ad-hoc livecoding here and there.

Moreover, at this point I'm kind of confused about myriads of SIGGRAPH ticket variants and am yet unable to decide on what would be the best. Also, all of the interesting ones are pricey as hell.

One more slightly unrelated thing: I will be in Tokyo starting Friday for a week and a few days. It would be awesome if we could hang out!

Hi provod,

This is good to hear. About Friday, assuming you meant this Friday, feel free to contact me. By the way there is a Picotachi on Saturday night.

Regarding SIGGRAPH, yeah, it is very expensive.

  • Ideally you'd want a Full Conference Pass paid by your company.
  • The next best thing is the Basic Conference Pass. The difference with the above is that it doesn't give access to the courses, the Reception and the Electronic Theater.
  • If it were me and I couldn't afford those, I would go for an Experience Pass and an Electronic Theater and/or Reception ticket depending on how much I could afford.

Unfortunately the access to "Birds of a Feather" requires at least a Basic Conference Pass (the $450~$650 one).

In case you haven't seen this link already, they have a table of the different tickets.

I see. Thanks for the info!
I will try to make it. If I do (should know by the end of the month), and if you are low on speakers and have a 15-30-ish minutes time slot, I could perform a quick shader livecoding session.

And my invitation to hang out with you and other sceners and sympathizers before Saturday evening is still on ;).
