2 parties should be enough for anyone

category: general [glöplog]

im thinking of adding another field of partyinfo for the prods that were re-released more then once (some werent shown at a party but were on another, others were simply released more then once, some of them even winning 1st place twice), the question is: is 2 parties enough? i think there are atleast 2 prods i can recall that could use 3 party info slots, but is it worth the overload of retrieving nulls on the database? i think not.
opinions.

There isn't a law in the constitution of the world saying so

so you can make a prod and release it at each party of the year ?

Odd demand at least 19537 parties

it is kinda _unadvisable_ as some sort of unwritten rule..

but there are/were/have been quite many groups who have done it.

- some because the prod didnt got shown at the bigscreen on a big party so they wanted to see it shown on big screen at next smaller party,
- others couz they wanted to put the 1st place demo on their resume.
- others simply couz they wanted to see the demo become more known "internationally"

i guess nowdays it hardly happens anymore. certainly not as often as it did back in 1996-2000... we could pretty much blame it on scene.org+internet

skarab: most parties dont accept demos previously released. some dont notice till its too late ;)

i don't know how pouet's db works, but...
can't you store a string of parties-id on a single field, and let php parse them properly ?
my two buggy cents

no, and i also need to save party place and partycompo and partyyear, so its 4 new fields per each aditionaly partyinfo..

I figure you should just list the party where the production was originally released.
What about a new table with some JOIN-action?
Considering Rob is Jarig has been released at about 10 parties by now, I think you ought to consider at least 10.

(come on ps, you and I *know* that you're adding this feature for Rob)

i am not.
maybe i should just force ppl to reenter same demo twice (ten times) like:
rob is jarig
rob is jarig (se99 version)
etc etc..

actually, you could simply enter those as (for instance) "de billetjes van mnemonix zijn lekker zacht" by "random german scener (not kb)" and avoid the whole releaseparty hassle.

there are other prods, who keep exactly same name and were released at diferent parties.
square/pulse, that mawi demo with alkamas st, t-rex's ltp entry, tp8 intro/tpolm...

what about simply adding a "submitters comment" field to each demo? so the submitter can enter any extra data he/she wants, for example "re-released at (party) (year)" or "Radeon only" and we won't be needing any futher database extensions

perhaps "remarks" is a better name for the field

couz i wanna see the prod listed on party.php?which=xx .... under all the parties it was submite into -_-

1 party is enough imo...
Duckers idea could be interesting.

Moreover, having these multi-party fields will only encourage people to re-release even more their old stuff and I'm not sure the scene needs that :)

Duckers: or "release info". but yeah, the idea itself is good 'nuff.

Ithaqua: I'm sorry to inform thee that thy accusations are incorrect. Odd never re-released anything.

We did, however, make remixes.

... says the fakeuser. :)
But yeah, odd only remixed the elk demos.

There is no SE99 version! :(

The only reason Rob is Jarig gets renamed for the big screen all the time is to slip under the radar of the compo crew :) (It has been refused under the preposterous assumption that it had already been released before in the past. Imagine that!)
