Best fire effect?

category: code [glöplog]
what's the prod with the best (oldskoolish) fire effect?

There are dozens of dozens of fire effects. With regard to tiny intros, i didn't dive into it myself, but i guess a real good one can be done in 64 bytes. So far there are pretty good ones in 256b (example) and 128b (example). Without size restrictions though ... no clue :D

Err, what's your definition of "best" in this particular case?

as HellMood said, there a zillions of prods with comparable fire effects, but like for every effect there must be prods where you would vote with "awesome" ;) .. it's of course just a question of personal opinion ..

what was the first prod that showed this effect? I've seen it often in DOS prods back in the days, but I guess it was used on other platforms, too?

Not 256b but Flame routine by Capacala looks nicer than the usual effect.

Frankly, I am struggling to remember a single fire effect that would not look a bit cheap. Your example of fireworks intro looks better than others, but is not really a fire effect.

It's hard to say, there are so many and they are similar and different, depends on various factors (how some look coarse, non repeating pattern, or lame repeating patterns, if base is visible or not, etc) and the presentation.

The dos one I remember and like that screen is on Elements by Xography. It wasn't the fastest/more highres, but looked good and was presented with logo in front and burning credits.

In games, I quite liked in Blood the game, even if it's simple, how it was used as a furnace texture and how smooth and non repeating pattern it was, https://youtu.be/iaRQK5ThKlU?t=179 and of course the PS1 Doom fire sky which looks crispy https://youtu.be/P-e7fvThJnE?t=103

and jare's one in inconexia
this intro from my buddy GS applies the classic fire algorithm to a cube, a little bit slow but quite nice

GBA FireCube

I remember another Demo (probably DOS) with a Cube on fire, but forget the name ...

yeah, there's also a 6 years gap between the two releases ;)
the fire cube is in capacala - the real thing, afaik... tho looks more like fire-colored motion-blur than fire :)
Yes, it is not from the demo, nor it is "acclaimed", but here it is:

My favourite one, I had DN in 1999 and liked that screensaver much)
The effect file is less than 1 kb.
