Revive Disk Swapping

category: offtopic [glöplog]
I was thinking of the b4, but using USB's instead of course (or real disks if you prefer ;) do you think it's worth the trouble of starting a swap group, does one already exist that i can get into?, It's a great feeling getting something scene related in the mail! Rules would be like the old days i guess, copyoff/dupe and send on to next person in your area, (Closest postage).

A cms or something would help to keep track of people's addresses. so using black magic, you just send to the closest member?

What do you think? i'm wiling to start the process by buying a couple of dozen usb sticks, but need to know the interest in it before c omitting...
if your in, just post in this thread so i know how many ppl are interested and if possible your country to get a rough estimate of logistics.

That’s the best idea I have heard in the last 10 seconds but only because I have heard no other ideas in the last 10 seconds. But 12 seconds ago I had the idea to put my hand into a blender and even that is a better idea.

How is the latter a bad idea? Just add milk and you get a tasty Handshake.

Mh... sending 5"1/4's is quite uncomfortable. Amiga or PC preferred (3"1/2 inch SDD or HD). Disks with Handles/Grouptags on them make nice collector items. I'll think about it. Probably.

SDD? no. DD i meant.

Price and availability?, People need to be able to share back but 3.1/2" would be cheaper and much more easy to get a hold of, But then again i don't have a machine that uses them (except MS-DOS) I'd love to get my hands on an A500 someday though.

I could just buy and distribute Amiga disks (without using an Amiga I'm that good) but then what would be the point of a sharing group if everybody just wants to keep the cool disks with cool graphix on them, but then again I'm just guessing what everybody would do.

meh, I might just make something cool and give it to the scene via free stuff for Sceners board or something, Which just reminds me i have around 200 blank CDR Business Card sized discs :)

or if you wanna have really cheap shipping... just 'glue' a MicroSD under the stamp on a regular 'greetings from {town}'-postcard! some people did that like 10 years ago :D
SD-Breakout Postcards... hm! Nice idea!

This USB/HDD swapping scene is alive and well in some countries, like Cuba. I don't see an actual point in restoring that nostalgic "glory" and awkwardness in any countries with an actual Internet. However if you get other people interested in starting swapping, why not? :)

what kind of warez do you intend to swap? VGA Planets play-by-mail?

had to buy 3.5" discs and a usb floppy drive to swap data with my 286 pc .. didn't remember how this sucks .. so now I'm using a null-modem cable instead

Wouldn't it be easier to just call a bbs or copy the usb stick at your local high school?

It's proper disk swapping only if you don't have good online connections. I think that back in the day, the scene was basically split between those who could call BBSes and those who mailed floppies around. Not black and white of course.

Easiest: include just one file on your medium - a file with download url of the content.

Preacher, you're about my age and I dunno how long you've spent in high school... but USB sticks in high school? they kinda surfaced in the early 2000s, afaik :D I had a ZIP drive with several 250MB disks in the late 90s, but that was rather vaporware as nobody else did, so I mostly used those for backup purposes :)
I didnt have a modem and grew up in the countryside with most sceners living far away. Unpacking those tagged down disks with fresh demos was a highlight of the week. Also we swapped some stickers, random crap and mixtapes. It was my source of underground electronic music. Otherwise it would be only Ace of base and Toradertrioen available where I lived
