Revision 2020 - new/fresh compo idea?

category: residue [glöplog]
So now you're at letting OS drivers playing prerecorded animations on the big screen from animation players?

You did fall for the fake YouTube overlay in Piledriver, did you

You may be a bit out of touch here ;)

Or may be he's dead on and you're the one who's actually "out of touch"?
(Full disclosure: I don't know the above to be an actual fact but I do recommend you to at least consider the option, perhaps next time you're coding a scroller or some copperbars for example.)

State Of The Art came out literally ~27 years ago. Why this discussion NOW?

Also let's conveniently forget that what you so easily dismiss as "animation players" is in 99% of cases way more complicated, well planned and optimized code than your copperbars and poly fillers, shall we.

I considered it and dismissed the option :)

Okay, let's just cut to the chase and have a new compo at Revision called Real Genuine Coders Contest where coders take a written 2-hour exam to see how much they REALLY know about Amiga. This is more efficient than the whole "showing demos on the screen" ordeal, and besides it's only the coders' skill that we of course really care about. Those flashy, imaginative, and entertaining demos are simply the byproduct of a coder's intellect which is the true product of demoscene!

that seems redundant, let's have visitors provide IQ test scores and award them directly based on that, saves a lot of trouble

make sure the scoring system is weighted to favor mensa memberships

by comparison.. only REAL djs play vinyl only sets.. as posted on social media by the DJ who doesn't play anywhere.

what i weird world! :D
Well the initial question is interesting, and it's a classic that has no answer: "what makes the demoscene unique/different?" and if something makes it different, "should parties focus on what makes demoscene unique?". Pixar does computer generated content, and it's not demoscene. Unity organizes challenges/contests with money prizes, it's real-time, and it's not demoscene. Oh dear, same questions again, will never be sorted out. Demoscene is about drinking beers with friends watching stuff that people outside of our microcosm don't understand. Fair enough for me. Can we make a new compo about that?

Photon: Are you still butthurt about the fact that Eon (well deserved) won last year's Revision?
And no, it's not just animation, but a lot of clever tech went into it and I think these kind of demos are much more interesting than the 10000th scroller, copper and chessboard, sorry.

... much more interesting and, at least in the case of Eon, vastly technically superior. Reading the tech writeup was mindblowing.

This is getting out of hands. Less drama and more demos, please!

What's this obsession with scroller, copper, and ... chessboard?
Do we really need writeups now to appreciate anims? ;)

Well I guess most people appreciated the demo before the writeups already, because it's entertaining and aesthetically pleasing.

The writeups just show that it's way more to it than 'just anims'. I don't get why there are coders who apparently cannot appreciate that something can have great looks and great tech.
I have nothing against a good effect show but I think there's enough space for all kind of demos in demo compos.

...and then we have partyvoting and Metalfotze wins anyways against all "art demos" and all "effect demos" because "They have computers..."

A pragmatic solution could be to limit the size of demos to the size of one disk, so that anim demos won't run for that long at least.

Btw the H264 versions of some demos are smaller than the demos themselves.

If you want to take part in a compo that is size-constrained enough to prevent "cheating" with animations and precalc, 64K is that way --->

gasman: you spelled "4k" wrong :)
Let's put the 64 back in h.264

Let's go all the way and have peer reviewing. We're mature enough now.

We could have a code review board, where a jury composed of real coders filters the submitted demos based on their source code, so only demos deemed worthy of being labelled "real demoscene" are presented to the public.

#AMIGEXIT!!!! Ban those old inferior machines with same-same demos like reheated turds in general from the entire demoscene plz. thanks! Actually, ban C64 too, they're even older and their demos even more boring to watch!

i forgot to mention Atari, but.. nobody makes Atari demos anymore anyway, so, no need to ban those :P
