Did this picture come from the scene?

category: general [glöplog]
BB Image

I have seen a similar thing in several demo's, so I was wondering if this graphic was made by a demoscene person somewhere. The comment on the file mentions an author's name and a web address, but the image is several years old, I downloaded it in 1998/1999 and copied it between various computers and stuff, but now I'm curious about its origins.

So does anybody recognize this picture?

I found this thing on a web page that was giving out free gif animations for personal home pages. At that site, this image was on the top of the page , two of them were to the left and right of a large heading, I don't remember which website that was, but I imagine it doesnt exist any more.

as if cheap interference patterns where invented by the demoscene...

Thomas Young was a demoscener \o/

even though this pic is NOT the Young's holes pattern :)

that's just a fractal with a palette-rotation.. anyone who likes fractals could have done it.. imo.

Well, the main reason I suspected that it might have came from a scener is because I have seen similar effects in some demos. It looks like something that was programmed rather then drawn, just because its so symetrical looking. It kinda looks like a pallete rotation and a calculation of some kind, I was just curious about where it came from.

Anyway, the jokes are fun but what I really want to know is if anyone recognizes it or can tell me how it was made.

I went outside last night, and when I looked up at the sky, I saw this:

I was wondering, did this come from the demoscene? I've seen this same starfield effect in many old demos.

sweet, so we have this keftales thing:
http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=16388
but that was released in 2005, so it is too new to be the origin of this picture.

A fractal with pallete rotation, fun stuff, thanks for that.

I havent been able to find anything about this Mike3D though, pouet search has come up empty and google is giving me too many mike3d's to tell which one I'm looking for.

Lots of them in this demo, but definitely not the first time they've been done. I think it's just a fractal pattern with colour cycling though.
if thats a fractal im the pope

I noticed both of the productions I've been refered to have 'kef' in their name. What does this 'kef' mean? Is the effect we are looking at in here called 'kef'?

I realize my posts are making me sound like a lame idiot but I don't really care, anyone who feels like being helpful can do so, if you feel like insulting me you are free to do that as well.

kef is for kefrens and these circles were originally implemented by metallion in this demo: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=10308

It's not a fractal, strictly speaking, but it is self-similar which most take to be the same thing anyway. It's probably an interference pattern - the discernible shapes are an aliasing effect of the discrete sampling of some boring function like (x^2+y^2) MOD <colourdepth>. The animation is definitely colour cycling, and the picture has probably been seen in about 100 really bad demos. I guess this kind of thing is most often coded by mistake though, and you won't find any coder who would take credit for inventing it, because it's a really boring effect. Also, these patterns were well-known long before computers appeared (only back then some people actually thought they were interesting). ;)

@phoenix: I invented that. I should have applied for a patent. :(

It sure came from a demoscener! It was shot at the lemonparty, afaik. Search for lemonparty on google ~_~

Fun stuff, thanks for all the help guys, as well as the jokes. The message board flame humor gives me a small amount of satisfaction, a bit of familiarity in a place that would otherwise be completely new to me.

I'd sure like to meet some of you characters in person some day, you guys are a riot, shame I don't have the means to do that kind of traveling quite yet.

I was hoping that it was a widely known picture, something that alot of you would instantly recognize and be able to tell me to where it came from, but apparently this picture is very insignificant. It had been sitting in my collection for such a long time, I thought just maybe somebody else out there had a copy of it too.

I hope that my posts aren't frustrating anybody, I realize how I must appear to some of you, but I'm really not as bad as your interpretations of my posts. Its hard to tell if people are truly angry or just making fun, but I imagine most people don't take this seriously and are just having fun, but just in case I thought I might say that I don't mean to upset anybody.

I'd be pretty afraid of the demoscene if one of you kids out there was really the goat.cx guy, or if tubgirl was floating around in the crowd somewhere

I bet you all get people like me coming in here every month making posts like this one, then losing intrest and never coming back. But I'm not going to be one of those temporary members who has a brief moment of activity then dissapears, sure I might say some stupid things, but it is kind of inevitable. I'll try and keep a low profile and act as unobnoxious as possible, but I can't promise much.
