concerning german tv, GIGA, and other lamers!

category: general [glöplog]
do we really need to get known in the public? i mean whats the point when silly tv moderators present so called art (lets call it demos or intros) on the broadcast stations and interrupt every single demo/intro after just 1 minute because they run out of time. my point is that we dont need such a foolish audience. museums are ok or serious reports about the electronic art scene. its also not a good idea to announce demo partys like evoke there. ok i know some people here and there want to make all this public. but please not to such a stupid audience. my point is that people who are skilled and interested find the scene on their own. have to leave now :) laters boys and girls

Indeed. We are the true artists, and deserve to be shown in only the best museums, for people who have an exquisite and refined taste and who are dressed in fancy suits. Anything lesser is putting us down.

scene is and was meant to be "elite". serious tv programs as that one about breakpoint on 3sat are imho very okay, but a audience like the ppl who watch giga is imo not the right audience for demoscene stuff... we don't need people who only have the skills to consume what we produce.

do we want something like this(?):

random old scener: "how did you find the scene?"
random lamer: "i watched my favourite 1337 gamer program on tv and found something cool to leeeeeech"

I bet many in here found out about demos from the cracktro to their copy of lemmings. if a few 15yo kiddies (who typically watch giga) lay off their counterstrike-clan in favor of trying to do a demo, I can't see whats wrong.

elitism is great if it means you want to innovate to produce the best you can and nothing less. elitism is stupid if you can't and start whining because you fear others destroying your ancient conservative ("oldschool") scene values by taking over and changing what you did for the last 10 years.

elitism is "we can do it but you cant" - i dont see where tv programmes hurt that...

i'm working at mtv at the moment on a concept called 'pimp my screensaver' where kids get a cool demo as screensaver and have no interest in how it's done but just like the way it looks! it's gonna be fucking awesome!

Is this the same tv show that reviewed Nexuiz recently

if so then I agree, demos need to be kept away from that nonsense tv, i mean, exposure is great, but exposure to muppets is bad

The demoscene went public the very same moment when demosceners started to use the internet. since the first days of csipd an hornet the demoscene has left the underground.

The appearance of the demoscene in last nights giga games show wasn't directly initiated by any demoscener. guess what, they have internet over there and they know how to use a browser. And heres the big secret: IT'S ALL WRITTEN ON THE INTARWEB

And you know why you find that show so bad and stupid? Because it's not made for you. They are not adressing you when they show demos. The show demos to an audience that has been mostly into gaming (until now :).

You should also check some more threads around here and give it some thought if in comparison their audience still looks stupid. :)

Exactly. It you don't like it, you're most likely not part of the target audience anyway. ;)

And besides: Complaining about GIGA is so 2002. (or whenever they started showing demos).

The real problem was not the lack of elitism or the mainstream presentation imho, but rather the lack of Foliba!

SIE HATTEN KEINEN FOLIBA!!!

The giga episode was MUCH worse than the 2002 (or whenever) stuff. While advertising Evoke / Digitale Kultur e.V. all the time (yuck), that guy did even dare to READ their website prior to the show to get some basic knowledge. He didn't know what Gamma correction is, he didn't know the difference between Intros and Demos (his explanation was that Intros tell a story, while Demos show effects, hooray), he presented "Patient Zero" without noticing this is a 3D demo (and wondered about the strange colors) etc etc etc.

Luckily the gamers don't give a shit about all this, so while the guy told the viewers to go to Evoke several times, this probably won't happen anyway.

While I think demoscene media coverage is ok, I still think it's a good idea to check who you are working with. Compare this giga crap with the reports done by 3SAT neues.

But oh well, we had that "Digitale Kultur e.V. is too much after getting cheap media attention at any cost while happily selling their and the scenes asses" discussions in the past often enough, so I won't go there now ;)

i think that it is quite stupid to believe that showing clips of demos in tv would somehow hurt the scene.

Ok, now imagine giga.tv showing this demo - now THAT would impact the scene as we know it!

Overexposure is bad, exposure to the wrong people is bad, look at what happened to trance music, they are still bitching about how the music stopped being creative when it got popular, and you guys are still bitching about the decline in quality demos since the internet. Crikey

To clarify: DKeV is doing a lot of great things and does a lot to support the scene. Hooray for them.

I still think they'd choose their media partners more wisely.

Incorrect. The moment they started greeting people that weren't imaginary friends, the scene went public.

I'm sure even you know what I mean (hello ps) ;)

The demoscene went public? Can I buy shares?
I bet they'll outsource our scene-jobs to India next :(

let me quote something from this giga.tv:

the moderator is currently showing "fr-045: life after", you can see a chick

he says: "if you want to be part of a demo find a coder as a boyfriend since they always use their girlsfriends as part of a demo. i know some coders so i know."

he goes on: "actually this is an paradoxon. coders dont get such good looking girls...." "... or they are doing art thats why they get those chicks. because they are artitsts..."
