i was in NY in 1998. but NY it's nothing like the rest of the US, or so i've heard.

about NY: i really enjoyed to be in such a big and diverse place. i met people from all over the world and made many friends. some of them american. about the latter ones, they were probably not as intelligent as Adok claims to be, and sometimes were very annoying - but not as much as Adok, of course - but generally they seemed to be interesting people, with their eyes open wide to a several number of matters.
the city itself - manhattan, that is - was in most places clean, well taken care of, and there wasn't a lot of seperate ghettos. ok, chinatown was different from anything else, and as we were going more uptown you could see some distinct neighbourhoods, but generally i always felt integrated in those places.
the food was sometimes nasty. some deli's were just fine, while others made me sick. i managed to eat in mcdonalds only once. mostly, i ate pizza. hum, pizza...

well, time to pouetize the thread

nitro2k01: Where Bush Jr did that obscene gesture?

Others: yes, it seems to be a rubbish culture but where did these pictures have been taken? In which States?

1/ Are the USA all the same over the 50 states or not?

2/ Is there a "better" state than other?

3/ Where are the brain concentrated in the USA?

4/ Any real life experience to share?

5/ What is the history of USA?

6/ What is the ideal of Americans?

7/ What are the pros and cons of the American way of life?

8/ How complicated are their laws compared to other countries / ensemble (like France, Germany, or even Europe)?

Thanks

Go to ye Oldde Clue Shoppe, or ask the almighty Wikipedia and Google.

Regarding Dubya's gesture AFAIR, he tried to be funny before an interview on FOX or ABC. That wasn't supposed to be film, and of course someone leaked the tape.

3. That's simple : They are in the blue states.

@kelsey: That's a british bus. :D
@qsdde: As far as I remember Bush did that before/after a TV interview when he thought the camera was not recording.
1-3: What p01 said!
4: No.
5-6: Inducing fear. It all started with Smith & Wesson (Or other amnufacturer?) trying to scare people into buying guns to protect themselves from something. Robbers? Bears? Little OT: If you're a gun-maniac and refer to the second amandment, please read the whole amandment, and the pile of verdicts showing that the second amandment does not prohibit regional gun control laws.
7: There's a lot to say on this one obviously, and I choose one thing: Con: Intolerance.
8: Well maybe a little more complicated since they have both state and nationwide legislation.
Speaking of which: USA has more people in prison for drug use alone, than the total amount of people in prison in Europe. And still more people live in Europe.
This is a product of the fear and intolerance policy in USA. (Do it once and you're fucked. Do it thrice and you're fucked for life)

Ah p01 answered the one about JWB already. That last post was a little inconsistent, because I'm tired and in a hurry to go to bed. Hope y'all get the point anyway.

Yeah, but on the USA and on the UK you can deal really quickly with your politician: see there http://gov.ca.gov/.
That's different from France for instance.
And it's not just an image: this really works.
I've used that kind of service when I was in London.
So there is pro and cons.
Any other XP?

5) There's a nice resume in "Bowling for Columbine"

1,2,3,4,6,7,8) Forget the US of A, come to Portugal.

4) went to NYC in 1999.
- ironicly I lost my appetite for fastfood there (unbearable to eat)
- even back then the immigration wanted to know everyting from you at the airport (but no fingerprints, yet)
- had to show my ID to proof that I'm >21 as I bought spraycans at 231st street :D
- as rotten as the NY tunnels are, they got motion detectors planted...

8) funny thind is, that the majority doesn't even know all about their constitutional rights.
(f.e. the difference between "reasonably belief" and "propable cause" in the issue of search warrants)
Many don't know therefore the crutial sections of Wulfowitz's-Doctrine-Light a.k.a Patriot Act or the furthertaking
Domestic Security Enhancement Act.

2) since the establishment of the private controlled Federal reserve in 1913 this question is more or less obsolete. Until that date the states had their own dollar bills ( some even printed by railroad companies ;D ).
So every state was like a country for itself.

5) One may say the history of Northern America is bloody as hell. Well, the european was not less (even worse).
But in america this bloodshed was done in only 500 years.
And that's world record.
