Random Scene Wiki Thread

category: general [glöplog]

Oh hi,

in this other thread the idea of relaunching a demoscene wiki was raised.
I have been pondering with that idea for quite some time now (setting up an earlier version of a wiki based on Dokuwiki before but decided the system is too crappy so this time its based on Mediawiki), and now shifter approaching me on irc gave me the final push to aim for public support.

I dont think the scene needs another database for indexing groups and prods (we have plenty of those already), so instead the wiki system should be used for what its best suited for: background information, making ofs, write-ups, funny rants, drama, party reports and maybe even unconfirmed rumors ;)

But while I can do the system-maintenance part of it alone, I cant (and dont want to) run (and design) the site on my own. I know some of you have uttered interest in the idea, so for now i have opened a small irc-channel on IRCnetnamed #demopedia to gather some folks and ideas.

So if you like the idea and want to help out in any way you can and see fit join us on irc :)

I don't think that, if this encyclopedia wants to be taken seriously, it should be open for "funny rants, drama [...] and maybe even unconfirmed rumors". If this is the case, then we certainly don't need it - there's enough of that on pouet already. If, however, this is aimed at becoming a serious user-driven encyclopedia (with tough moderation, of course), then I'll be glad to help.

What we rather need is not a troll playground but an encyclopedia that relates the history of groups and parties, with a proper listing of all sources and from a neutral point of view.

of course im not saying we should be allowing trolls or disruptive behaviour, but staying all serious and factual like wikipedia would probably resolve in the same old struggle for reliable sources, completeness and relevance the original has to fight with constantly. i think being as open and inclusive as possible is def. needed for a good start, but of course i would love you to help and discuss about it.

Compared with Wikipedia, maybe we can solve the reliability problems. But there comes the amazing "Neutral point of view" and "Notability" wars.

I'm looking forward the "TRSI" and "RSI" pages. Or the "Best demogroups", "Best Coders" and "Best Musicians".

All serious and factual, of course.

:]

agreed with Dipswitch and Shifter although I wouldn't be adverse to it written in a somewhat digestible way like the old "history of groupsomething"-articles that were common back when diskmags existed.

But who will document the important pony/spiderman correspondence between knoeki and Tjoppen?

Ok, so I got this broken dokuwiki setup at untergrund.net. Write me at laerpen {{at}} dromland.se and I might give you write access if you seem trustworthy ;)

installing mediawiki takes 1 minute, point is, a pre-agreed direction and structure of content instead of mayhem! ;)
This discussion is interesting in regard with concurrent thread : What should demoscene.org website be ?.
@Tron Swamson @ wysiwtf : do you wish to play some role in it maybe ?

sure, i can install mediawiki in 1 minute!
Problem is, as far as I know, I don't have a sql account at untergrund. I was bugging scamp about it many years ago to no avail so I gave up on it. Also, besides looking like a Trabi I kind of like the flat file approach.
