What should demoscene.org website be ?

I'd love to have a demoscene github where sceners publish source code.

What's wrong with the non-demoscene github?

Non-demoscene github is fine .... I'm thinking of categories (effects, demos, algorithms, ...) and screenshots properly presented and organised and optimized for maximum convenience. Actually it would not need to be based on git but should have a proper presentation of source code and tutorial style documentation/comment functionality. No branches or tags needed. Source code maintained only by the owner/presenter.

Why is the demoscene so little open source anyway?

For me it's part of the competition.
I mean, if I create a certain effect, I either want to add something new to the mix, or I want to do the same effect better than it's been done before (more dots/more bobs/more polys etc).
This may involve some hacks/cheats/etc.
I think the fun part is in not giving away all these secrets, so that other coders have to figure out how you pulled it off (and possibly reverse-engineer your code).
At least, that's the fun part for me: I rarely look at other people's code. I want to figure it out for myself, and see if I can do better.

I think the danger in using other people's code is that you take this code as 'the holy grail': This is the way a certain effect should be done, and you stop thinking about other/better ways to do that effect.

Sure. What I was getting at is that you need aggretation, not a github clone. Like a curio for demoscene related github repositories.

a scene-pedia? like wikipedia but for the demoscene?

with all explanation for platform, parties, sceners, effects (people asked for an complete effect list), etc... etc...

can be helpful since it doesn't exists yet (as far as i know) and it doesn't overlap with pouet.net or demozoo or any other existant website.

my two cents! :D

If there was never any traction for a scene wiki / 4chan clone / github-for-lesbians site before now, I don't see why those ideas would suddenly become interesting now, just because we've got a potential domain name for them.

Scene-pedia sounds neat, though it should be run by a neutral administrator.

Yep! None of these ideas will ever happen because people will only post about it in this thread but nobody will want to make/maintain it!

So, to save everyone the trouble, the website should just say "GREETINGS FROM THE DEMOSCENE" with this picture:

Baudsurfer: I'm late to the party but . . .

I'll maintain it if no one else will.
Happy to take the keys if no one else wants to maintain it.

I envision a landing page with a short description and links to:
scene.org
Pouet
Demozoo
demoparty.net
Bitfellas
Slengpung
The Wikipedia page
SceneSat

Open to suggestions.
Hm. And perhaps yes, a small curio cabinet with links to demoscene-related repositories with more than x number of records. E.g. Farbrausch etc.

What is this good for? General promo events, and the Wikipedia page.
must... resist... witty... remarks...

oh, don't. more fun that way. (;
@Kabuto : yes we agree it should be managed by someone neutral. We would only be providing for the domain name, probably storage, and maybe skeleton (as Mandarine group did with pouet : "Pouet is brought to you by Mandarine") - but hope not. We lack the time to keep up with it too.

@Metoikos : thank you for being keen to "take the keys" : your motivation is most welcomed. If you do envision long-term commitment and taking into account other people's remarks in this thread to some extent, can you please contact me through our group's page please so we can discuss further details.

@okkie : your idea is not too shabby ;)

Anybody has other remarks, ideas please ?
@okkie, I soooo wish 'd be the guy at the right, with the cowboy boots.
Was that old photo from some Danish Gold party? At least i've seen in couple times before. Yeah, mid-lenght mocha cowboy boots with jeans stucked inside is a classic wear!
