Soundcloud being sued by the PRS

category: music [glöplog]
Great hint, thanks hOffman! The hearthis.at pages have a very quick feel.

well, considering trying to be legit killed grooveshark, and being purchased by majors killed last.fm, it wouldn't be very surprising if something similar was about to happen to soundcloud.

audiofingerprinting to send out copyright claims is annoying, i got some of those claims when uploading some tracks aswell, most of them were accurate though (re-releases, intro sampling), so not much to complain about on my front. it was probably forced to happen to allow them to walk the proper rights managment road demanded by the copyright extorsion lobby, ofcourse it'll never really work in the end (youtube isnt sorted and they have google engineers behind it ffs) and they would never reach agreement everyone would be happy with.

guess SC is bound to go down sooner or later, all we can do is ride the wave while it's hot. same copyright nonsense as always, i'm sure another free service is bound to grow popular to fill it's void. can't believe everyone is cool with paying for spotify and apple music to get their daily music fix.

guess bandcamp is up for the hot seat next until they get bought out aswell.

problem with "yet another online streaming platform" like hearthis.at is lack of visibility, plenty of similar sites around, they usually last for 1 or 2 years and go innactive when they realize there is no money to be made, with their community eventually catching on. not much motivation for labels to support all of them, rather focus on the more trendy ones.

haha .. this had to happen sooner or later .. :)

there's a lot of music being offered there, without the rights of their owners.
and the songs being reposted like an idiot .. .

what about bandcamp or similar .. i might need to switch aswell

I grabbed my usual aliases at yungcloud.com (few weeks ago) and hearthis.at (just now) but I haven't gotten around to doing anything with them. Will probably migrate my profile over soon enough.

(Incidentally is there a good way to link multiple usernames / aliases together that isn't a kludge?)

Meanwhile Buzztunes is still going strong. Not a huge site but I've been there since ~2011 and it's an awesome little community. They are open to all scene-ish or non-scene-ish musicians, not just Buzz users, and you can upload your MOD/XM/IT/Buzz/Renoise/Sunvox source files there too.

Will be interesting if worrying to see what happens to Soundcloud ... it was a great site / community / tool when it started. I really hope this doesn't spell the end of what it was. If the 'collection societies' / copyright lobby manage to take it down it will probably be one of the biggest wholesale destructions of independent music ever. I'm sure they would count that as a victory. Hope some group like Archiveteam is making a backup.

I don't think you understood what tEiS meant by "reposting".

Go to "edit profile" -> "login data / masterkey"
Copy your masterkey
Log out
Log in to your other account
Click "your profile" on the left sidebar
Paste your masterkey into the box and hit 'add'

The first account will now be a sub-account of the second one.

You can also make a 'group' account and add handles / other members to your group.

..but yeah, it had double meanings in it. i like it like that.

will check buzz and yungcloud. thanks for the links!
basically im just looking for a site that lets me listen to my mixes on old ipad.
emailing em to myself is an option too..

nobody has mentioned the countles fake accounts in SC that sell followers!
reported about 10-20 of em and they were taken down but more came. it seemed strange.
i have a theory that it was actually SC themselves doing it.

hehe ok, well i didnt get the sarcasm there :D

and yea, i've got mailed tons of times, if i'd be interested in this or that service or if i'd like to add my song here or there .. such fake accs are still floatin around .. and are pretty annoying!

and asking if you want to pay them for spamming your tracks, yeah i get them aswell, quite annoying.

For those of us who make zero income with music, hearthis.at seems also like a deadend. after 10k listening time the author can no longer upload new music, unless the author pays up.

I kinda like this approach in the sense that I will keep on my toes and maybe fires me up to look into coding my own resolution

I don't recommend coding your own resolutions, as monitors may not be able to sync to them. Better stick to safe old 320x200.

meanwhile, last.fm stopped allowing upload from indies :)
another platform down the drain. was already pretty abandoned for the last few years after they got bought and closed the radio service, now it's just yet another commercial venture barely anyone uses. reminds me of myspace.com revamp somehow.

weird that there is no simple p2p system to just share livestream? a modern retake on soulseek maybe?

Did you try Tradiio ?
added on the 2015-10-24 20:06:55 by xernobyl xernobyl
Code:ERROR The request could not be satisfied. CloudFront attempted to establish a connection with the origin, but either the attempt failed or the origin closed the connection. Generated by cloudfront (CloudFront) Request ID: PwqDqRT_fFHOLIv8rib-xfUGG8hsTaQAohbZG5WzEyXs_TrYyt_Zog==

That puts a lot of confidence into that site!
tradiio seems ok if you're indie pop, for everything else i don't think it gives them much exposure. also seems to be more for artists then labels.

In the end there is always YouTube. That service hosts much more copyrighted music content like any other of these music hosters and has survived easily.
