Tokyo Demo Fest 2018

category: parties [glöplog]
Apologies for the delay, all of the releases are now up on scene.org (link above, thanks Gargaj!).

Our process for uploading the releases after the party has a number of issues that we haven't been able to really solve yet, leading to a multiple day delay until they're made available. Due to the closing time of the partyplace (the place we're renting the space from), we have to begin cleanup immediately after the party ends in order to ensure we can physically carry/move all the equipment and everything else out early Monday morning.

This gives us only about 30 minutes until we lose power and network access, so the best we can do is copy the results and releases off to a USB stick. I also don't live in Tokyo, and trying to use crappy hotel Wifi that evening to upload multiple gigabytes is a no-go until I finally get home the following day. Yesterday I was just too exhausted to go through and rename/fixup the entries after I got home and crashed, leading to them finally being uploaded today.

We're open to any ideas or suggestions if anyone has any, of course.

i recall i used to structrue, sanitize and re-package things while preparing / testing the compo entries at inércia, but then again we never bothered to use proper party management system and human errors inevitably came through, so it's not the ideal solution, just good enough for a small party of inércia's size. i would assume partymeister and such systems would facilitate preparing the releases for upload but honestly i never used any of them from the organizer side to really know.

Yeah, we do use PartyMeister and it's a lifesaver. TDF wouldn't happen without it.

The limitation is trying to upload multiple GBs to scene.org in under 30 minutes. We attempted to do it a few years back, and it just wasn't possible. If I lived in Tokyo, I could likely do it after I got home that evening though.

Perhaps if Zavie is up for it, I could hand him the USB stick next year and let him do the uploads? :)

maybe upload different compos as they end? instead of everything at once in the end.

Yeah, that was the first thing that came to mind. Is there actually a reason to postpone all of them until after the party? If the concern is taking the precious bandwidth away from the visitors, maybe you could upload the first day entries overnight so that you have much less to worry about the next day?

I can't found stream video from first day. Can you upload it on youtube?
Well, OK, orgas might have any kind of troubles uploading the prods to the scene.org.

But, we have here multiple download links and authors could first show up with their own links on their own resources and later those links could be replaced/appended with scene.org ones.

So I basically wonder why didn't authors care enough to make pouet releases themselves.

I hadn't considered that, and since the Wild Compo typically contributes to the large size of the productions (due to the video captures) this would be beneficial. My only concern is if I would have a chance after the compos ended on Saturday before we close the hall that evening, but it's something worth trying next year.

The Twitch recording settings unfortunately weren't properly set on the first day, which is why it isn't there. We found out and fixed it for the second day.

I do know we have the full video recording somewhere, but it's not in my hands so I'll ask the other organizers.

If I had to wager a guess, most Japanese demosceners likely don't even know pouet exists.
