The whole day (since the price giving) I was thinking if I should write a comment or not. Obviously, I decided to do so. :)

Actually, I am a bit disappointed that the trophys in the executable music were moved down due to remote entries that went on 1st and 2nd place.
I would have understood that prize money or other goodies would have been given to the next placed people within the competition, thats ok.
But giving somebody a trophy for a result that he did not achieve, is not ok. (That sounds harsher than it is actually meant...)

It’s not that something is wanted for free and at no cost. Everybody has reasons not to be able to attend in person, e.g. work, family, health, money, but still wants to participate and make a contribution to the party and apparently there seems to be the need of remote entries.

Maybe as a proposal for next parties:
Ask if the remote contestant would actually pay for the trophy expenses and shipment.

Just my 5 cents...

^ There are some events that mail trophies. Obviously these will get more support in the future as the number of remote entries grow

pOWL nailed it. Especially as there had been made exceptions to the rule if I recall the price ceremony correctly. However, I suppose Virgills car would not have broken down with that one more trophy to be delivered to one of his group mates.. ;)

Paying for trophy delivery when submitting remotely sounds great, I would support this aswell. The personal value of a trophy is much more important than prize money.

Thanks for organizing the party. It's great to be able to make remote entries, because I can only attend a couple of parties each year, and parties and compos are the only thing that keep me making prods. Here's my executable music entry, which I think placed 6th.

Windows exe, about 4kB. http://www.kameli.net/~yzi/serpille_terveisii_fix3.zip

How is it... non-visual things aren't prods in Pouet sense? Add a scroller and call it a demo. ;)

Hi pOWL! That moving-the-trophies thing was my idea (and agreed upon with Spire and the orga team) so I should probably explain myself :)

First of all let me say that I think I understand how you feel. I've had similar feelings at parties where I had made a third place only to be informed that that specific party only awarded trophies to the first places :/ I'm sorry our decision made you feel like that.

It's not that we're trying to skimp on shipping work / costs, it's more a matter of honoring people who are actually present at the party place and support the party with their presence - which is what makes it a party in the first place. We explicitly state in the compo rules that only visitors can win prizes. And of course we understand that y'all have reasons for not appearing in person and are not trying to swipe free swag here ;)

So we were faced with the conundrum that we might have entries in the top three that might not receive a trophy, but didn't want to throw away perfectly good trophies either -- so this is what we came up with, and we think it's a solution that's true to our rationale of honoring people present at the party.

It felt somewhat iffy to myself while we were holding the prizegiving, but I don't think any other solution would have felt less weird. I should also add that the trophies don't say "1st place", "2nd place", "3rd place" - they say "Disk 1", "Disk 2", "Disk 3" and are not really tied to any specific place :)

Regarding the exceptions that Dascon mentioned: CONS, Jonnz and all the others whose stand-ins picked up the trophies had actually been present at the party but left before the prizegiving (going by the "remote" label in PartyMeister here). One exception was Triace who had every intention to attend but fell sick as a dog on Friday so couldn't make it - it was my decision to award him nonetheless since it was an unintended not-in-person entry.

This discussion comes as no surprise to me or anyone else in the orga team, and we're open to discussing whether this was a good idea, a bad one or - well - an idea, so thank you for bringing up your view!

@yzi it's not only non-visual things... gfx, photos are not listed too.

@dojoe Isn't releasing something(that ends up in the top 3) support enough? In my book a quality release is way more valuable than just showing up at the party. A prod can only be released once and often it's days if not weeks or months of work that went into it, to me releasing remote is the ultimate sacrifice to begin with as watching the release of ones prod on the big screen among the crowd is the magic moment, the culmination of ones efforts.

I know, a party needs paying visitors but what it also needs to be called a *demo* party is releases, preferably quality ones that in turn might attract more people to attend and/or release, I'd certainly be more tempted to attend(and if I do I release) if I knew that there'd be a proper 4k compo happening.

come on... that's like having gold, silver, bronze and saying it's not tied to any specific place, heck I have a mug that has red instead of blue logos on it and that's a first place trophy(a lame one, but still), what makes it a first place trophy is the fact that everyone who got first place got that color, nothing else, that's how trophies work. Handing out trophies "for first place of the people that were there, like paid an entrance fee, maybe, but actually third in the compo" is super weird(especially considering that it says "1" on it) and makes remotes feel very unwelcome(at least it does for me), I mean you're literally giving away a persons trophy to someone else because the winner is not there, yet the results.txt states that person X should be in possession of that trophy. I totally understand the notion of not granting prizes for remotes as some of them can be quite large and might not be useful to the winner(iirc things like retro computer cases were among them once) but imho the trophies should be excluded from this and either be shipped or delivered through sceners.

tldr: bad idea, imho.

I feel like I need to add some words from me here, so where to start? First of all, thanks for all the get well-wishes which reached me. I’ll promise to be back next Nordlicht, hopefully in persona and with releases.

I missed the prize giving on stream and only found out the results on demozoo. First thing I thought was “damn, now that they have shiny trophies for once, I don’t win anything” just to find out about the above mentioned decision of the orgas after talking to Virgill. I didn’t think about it for too long but contacted p0wl directly to sort out everything with him.

To cut a long story short: I gotta forward the trophy to him as it just feels wrong to me to get a 2nd place trophy for a 4th place entry. Please don’t call me unthankful or that I don’t appreciate this shiny trophy, but it just feels to me that the trophy (and for me it doesn’t matter if you call it disk2 or 2nd place) in my opinion should be at P0wls place, he deserves it as he beat me fair and square in the compo.

Please do keep up doing so nice trophies next year as I definitely don’t want to miss one next year again!

@Triace: this is amazing and more than cool from your side. Kudos!
Still, I would very much like to point out that my comment did NOT mean that I do not grant people receiving the trophy - I just wanted to point out that paying for shipping and postage would be an option I would support for parties I personally contribute to by remote entries.

About quality of releases and a party benefiting for it, I would underline what LJ wrote

@dojoe: you did a great job, amazing trophies and for real this discussion is just meant in a constructive way, so please don’t get any negative feel from it. You only deserve positive vibes for your tremendous efforts in organizing such an event already.

Entries make a compo, compos make a party. Quality follows quantity. So make those prods and release them.

Triace - that's a very honorable gesture and I would never think badly of it - quite to the contrary :) I'm glad you helped resolve pOWL's gripes in this manner.

Dascon - no offense taken at all, as I said I'm glad we're having this talk. It helps get a feel for how ideas like this work out, and since apparently this one didn't work out so hotly, we'll have to think of something else for next Nordlicht :)

If anything it makes me glad (and also proud) that the trophies themselves are being received this well :)
