The Gathering 2005 (yeah, I'm not easily deterred)

category: general [glöplog]
Betong: What do you expect people to tell about after a party? Of course people will tell you about the strangest/craziest things they've encountered first. Why should a scener tell another scener that at the party he went to there were competitions and sitting together in a hall? Everybody knows about that part already.

Anyway, your impression is wrong. According to the survey results at http://breakpoint.untergrund.net/survey.php, 36% of BP04s visitors didn't attend BP03 and therefore probably most of them are new sceners. Also my personal impression from the party confirms this.

As you can also see from the survey, a whopping 4.6% of the visitors thinks that boozing is the most important aspect of Breakpoint.

Ok, enough of that ;)

Regarding the cooperation stuff: As you may know we already are planning to stream the scene.org awards over to you TG guys. Quite a few other suggestions have been made by various people in this thread, it's up to your team now to see which of those are acceptable.

I believe that young people who don't know that the scene exists, or have only recently heard about it, are more likely to go to more general parties like TG, and I think it would be sad if they didn't have a chance of learning about the scene there.

I don't think a newbie who "don't know that the scene exists" from, say, Spain or Italy would travel to either BP ot TG just to find out...

Face it - if someone is _completely_ new to the scene, he has to be either Norwegian to attend TG / German to attend BP, or be somewhat freaky to risk going to a major event like this in some distant country without experience or contacts.

According to the survey results at http://breakpoint.untergrund.net/survey.php, 36% of BP04s visitors didn't attend BP03 and therefore probably most of them are new sceners. Also my personal impression from the party confirms this.

Do you really think that just because someone only attended BP04 and not BP03, he/she counts as a newbie? I mean, I _COULD_ list people who did that and been around the scene since a while...

I think this "recruitment" thingy is overhyped from both sides.
BP is mostly advertised on scene forums and the likes - if you're not directly related to the scene, you probably won't get to know.
TG is advertised as a LAN - not by the organizers, but by the press. Chances are low for a computer-fond newbie will find the demoscene among the thousands of gamer events - even though I'm sure the sceneish-organizers do their best.

Bottom line is that I think BP, TG, or even ASM, or basically any party have the same chances of attracting newbies.

This really is a silly argument, isn't it?

Both exist over the same weekend for their own reasons, that's not going to change. I think both parties </pun> could benefit from some cooperation. Give each other a big hug and work together.

...meanwhile I'll continue to work on my cloning machine so I can attend both simultaneously.

sir RICHARD: you stupid motherfucker! If I suck then you suck 1000000 times more than me...heahehaehahheh!!! loooooser!
scamp: Yeah, everyone who at any given point of time didn't attend the last breakpoint is a new scener.

Over to something more constructive. The situation is currently this: TG is a party recruiting sceners from the norwegian general-computer-public. This means TG will never become a pure demoparty. BP is. Therefore, as long as BP and TG collide, I won't attend TG. And to be honest, I doubt that I would attend TG even if they didn't collide.

kusma: Yeah, that was indeed very constructive.

haha indeed ;)

Seriously, I'd probably give TG a try - I really miss visiting a big demoparty myself (BP doesn't obviously count for me). I could punch myself for not being able to visit ASM again, too.

Sooo...

Gloom, after so many suggestions you've received, how about doing one yourself? So where could we cooperate in a way sceners benefit?

gloom: I was stating the current situation for me, instead of abstracting it to some senseless mumbo-jumbo like the rest of you tend to do. I believe that stating how I feel, might contribute to finding weither anything should/could/would be changed about the "situation".

kusma: you are full of shit.
i must say sir, nice insult!

I have nothing to say besides that I will go to Breakpoint. (which makes a whole lot of difference for the average scener because everybody thinks that I'm cool).
scamp: Well, I like the "joined compo" idea, and so does Betong (Concrete/Contraz) apparently. I think that this could be a cool thing to try out. Of course, streaming is out, so we'd have to share the contributions (entries made at TG are sent to Breakpoint and the other way around, votes are cast at both places and counted together, then the results is also announced at both parties?)

Anyway, that's what I was thinking - is this something that could be fun to do? Of course, we'd have to decide -which- compo this should be. :) My immediate thought is the 64kb intro compo, but feel free to shout "BASS!!!111" if you think that's a terrible idea.

gloom : I buy the idea of a joint 64 k compo

gloom:

I think it's now time to move this discussion to email, and include ryg (compo mainorga) in the conversation. :)

You don't happen to come to TUM, do you? (As most BP orgas are present there)

scamp: No, unfortunately not. I had planned on it, but christmas is really the only time off for me every year and hey - it's nice to see your family (and not just the extended demoscene-family) once in a while too. :)

I'll email you, and we'll take it from there.

(though; people at pouet are of course welcome to keep this thread alive with good suggestions and the occasional "I'll never come to TG, fsck you people"-shoutout :)

gloom: the "joined compo" idea sounds great. Don't forget to include the 4k-intro as well..! Atleast when there have been in recent years too few 4k contribs at tg. If this goes through atleast one contribution have the opportunity to compete in a compo!
Every continent around the world should have a demoparty during Easter weekend, and then we can rename Easter to something like International Demoparty Weekend.

radman, damn, even my telling activator that he sucks was a more useful comment than that!
