There should be a site with downscaled compo gfx

category: general [glöplog]

On all parties there seems to be one or several graphics compos and the entries are usually found later on scene.org. But they all come as multi-megabyte tif-images which is not so fun to download on a dialup connection if you just want to look at what was submitted.

After a party there should be a page with downscaled versions of the submitted works so that you could get a quick look at them and then you can download those huge zip-archives if you like them. I know about the GFXzone page but it's never updated so it's use is limited.

Ah, you know, the oldschool 55.6 kbps connection :)

My point was, why use it for something it was never meant for?

Back when I had a crappy modem, I left it downloading stuff while I went to do something else.

I see what you mean. Anyway, my original point still stands. Even for people with fast connections this could be usefull...

can't tell about other parties, but we have releases-pages which can beat your releases-pages:

Yeah, that's what I mean. For some strange reason I've been missing out on those. But hey, there must be something inbetween a 2mb TIF and a 100x100 JPG eh? :)

... and wouldn't it be cool if they all where at the same place? Like since scene.org got them all, maybe they or someone else could do a browsable collection?

ahem. Some people CAN'T get broadband, and since when did the scene only cater to the rich?

Anyway, El Topo, I'd suggest the best way to handle this is - do it (:

(Not to mention this would be cool on a phone, even with the freaking REDICULOUS pricing schemes in the countries I seem to end up in.)
Lot of you are missing the point - a site (like GFXZone used to be, not just updated frequently anymore) with thumbnails for the graphics is always nicer than any multi-megabyte zip with this and that inside. I have ADSL but still not enough patience to go through gfx compo entries afterwards because I can't view them most of the cases easily after the party anyhow.

Kudos for German parties for making a difference. Would be nice to see other parties adapting the same kind of results pages.

"since when did the scene only cater to the rich?"

ever since day 1. *really* poor people can't even afford a computer at all.

Thanks for clarifying things melw!

I guess that the best thing when you want something done is to do it yourself as Sir Garbagetruck implies. It would definitely be a cool future project...

havoc: You are thinking in extremes. There are usually lot of things inbetween rich and poor.

can't get adsl? that sounds really strange to me. must be if you're living in africa or something like that.

and it's not a matter of being rich. i for one am far from it, but that doesn't stop me.

Well in some remote locations it's not possible go get ADSL... not everyone lives in a city. I used to live in a small village with 470 inhabitants and the phone company had to do a lot of cablework to even supply us with ISDN..

Yeah, and don't forget wireless internet access, that can be slow & expensive too.
