ive done VJing ive made demos ive published magazines and dvd's
ive done it all
and now alas i am left asking the question

making demo's and setting up demo scene sites etc etc

i guess its just a hobby?

but why?

ok it makes u feel better for a while a little bit of recognision from your girlfriend etc and a bit of self expression but thats about it

i think alot of people are just doing it to prove they can, to be popular?
vanity perhaps?

tell me why.....

To yell "BASS" in the middle of the streets.
...I haven't really done anything. I guess you are drunk, or your girlfriend left you.

i do it to forget my traumatic childhood where my alcoholic father beat me every day with a belt untill my mother ran away with me and my younger brother kevin (r.i.p) and we all moved into a crack house where my mother got pimped out by snoop dog.

There they sit, the preschooler class encircling their mentor, the substitute teacher. "Now class, today we will talk about what you want to be when you grow up. Isn't that fun?" The teacher looks around and spots the child, silent, apart from the others and deep in thought. "Johnny, why don't you start?" she encourages him.
Johnny looks around, confused, his train of thought disrupted. He collects himself, and stares at the teacher with a steady eye.
"I want to code demos," he says. His words are becoming stronger and more confidant as he speaks.
"I want to write something that will change people's perception of reality. I want them to walk away from the computer dazed, unsure of their footing and eyesight. I want to write something that will reach out of the screen and grab them, making heartbeats and breathing slow to almost a halt. I want to write something that, when it is finished, they are reluctant to leave, knowing that nothing they experience that day will be quite as real, as insightful, as good. I want to write demos."
Silence. The class and the teacher stare at Johnny, stunned. It is the teachers turn to be confused. Johnny blushes, feeling that something more is required. "Either that or I want to be a fireman."

most people from outside the scene don't get why someone would spend so much effort and skill into something that will not generate any money. may be that's why there are so few american sceners.

coding demos is the obvious thing you end doing if you are coding just for fun. games is a popular alternative, but most hobbyist game projects fail because of time and complexity.

even a simple demo done by a beginner can be presented to the demoscene, released at a small party, shown at a big screen before an audience, and then you're hooked!

im in it coz my shrink tells me so
i'm into demoscene because it's creation, and improving at creating is something you can learn all your life long.

it is a fun way to acquire skills you can sell as a coder or as an artist. however, people are hooked by the opportunities for recognition and self-expression. actually, these opportunities are limited, as demos only reach a small audience.
