@Evil1: True.. at the moment there are lots of different attempts for developing applications for mobile devices/phones.

Still I am of the opinion that mobile applications will have a strong impact in the future. As devices will be more widespread (appr. 0.5 - 1year) there will be strong demand for downloadable applications of any kind.

And as I said in the topic, developing for Symbian or mophun platforms were just SUGGESTIONS.
You could also check the Exen platform or other stuff..

Ah, and by the way, its sad to see that from 25 answers in this thread 98% are just pure bullshit. Cant you just stay serious for a moment or just shut the fuck up?

Poor pouet, poor demoscene....

Oh, and what I meant by "compatibility":
If you choose to code for eg. the Siemens SL45i you can be sure that your stuff will run on any Siemens SL45i.
And if you code for a an API like Mophun or Exen you can be sure your stuff will run on any device utilizing such an API. - There you have your compatibility.

It was always like this in pouet, but hey... I luv it! =)
At least there is always that 2% to give you the information you needed among with 98% of great fun you get :)

P.S. Hardwired demos someone said ehh? Heh,.. still, I should reconsider and talk about this with my friend Antitec/Dirty Minds. That beelongs to 98% for someone but gave me a great laugh,. but then a great plan for the (far) future :)

Or get rid of your Mac and buy a PC! =)
Let's all move over to coding on the VIC20. =-)

Cell phones the future of the demoscene? Like hell. These devices are a fad, not unlike CB radios a few decades earlier. For some people they're truly useful, but their current widespread popularity is based on nothing more than "gee whiz" factor.

Isn't the "gee whiz" factor what makes demos on any platform what they are? The numbers of people who have a PC and spend a fortune each year upgrading it for the same factor is staggering...

@thom: WOT??? With appr. 500 million cellphones selling each year, how can you seriously doubt their ongoing popularity? - To the contrary, there are surveys which predict both PDA and Digicam sales will drop in the future and those markets to be overtaken by the phone market on the long run. As of yet there are first phones with PDA functions, Colourscreen, Cam and extendable Memory. The market is gonna explode once production costs for such gadgets will be more affordable for the masses.

the only usefull thing in a pda is a calendar - and from what i've seen these new java enabled cellphones has calendars too.. => no more pda's for me :-D
I could not agree more with macaw on this... Except that I don't give a shit about calendars :-P

sam: 500 million cellphones selling each year? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!! Only a few more year until *every* single person one Earth has a cellphone, eh?

I don't have a cell phone. My family has no cell phones. None of my friends own cell phones. Only obnoxious teenagers use cell phones. I shudder to think there are 500 million new obnoxious teenagers every year.

TMR{COS}: No. "Gee whiz" factor is in reference to marketing tactics. The demo scene advertises nothing. (Well, at least not overtly...)
added on the 2002-09-10 06:44:34 by thom thom
I think you'll have a hard time finding anyone younger than 40 years WITHOUT a cell phone (in Denmark that is). Even kids in kindergarten has those gadgets and sends tons and tons of SMS'es as soon as they learn how to write...
Marketing tactics? Well, that's the same for the PC too otherwise we'd all still be sitting here using a low-end Pentium MMX with the original Voodoo chipset and an AWE32. It's only the sales pitches of the games companies and PC manufacturers that drives this "progress".

As for mobiles, there are three in this house and they're all owned by the adults... Well, i think i count as an adult. =-)

I've been coding some stuff for the TI-83 (calculator) in Z80 assembler. Sometimes when I feel like it, I code some 6510 asm for the good old C64. I've been thinking about hooking up my A500 and try my hand at 68000, Copper and Blitter etc. again.
Sure, I spend most of my time coding for the PC ín OpenGL, but doing something for a different platform once in a while is fun.
It was very nice to see the entries from the mobile compo at ASM02 (damn I want one of those PocketPCs!).
Anyway, my philosophy is: If a device has a display and is programmable - someone should be doing demos for it!

Inopia:
WAP stands for Worthless Application Protocol. So much for that

I never said anything about wap?

I just said GBA and GP32 !!! (they rule, especially the latter)
added on the 2002-09-10 10:25:34 by Inopia Inopia
like I said, get a gp32 (handheld console like GBA).. it's a arm9 (32bit risc) based machine running at 22-133 mhz (software setting), 320x240 8/16 bit color, 4chn hardware sound mixing (8,16 bit at 11,22,44 khz), 8mb ram, smart media for storage. It has USB, RF unit, sexy look and ports of wolfenstein and doom already exist, linux is being worked on. How much would you pay? Only 160usd at lik-sang, 150 euros when released in europe.

I don't have GP32 stock btw, I just like it a lot! See
www.devrs.com/gba/ for more details.
