mobile phone 3d chip

category: general [glöplog]
can anyone tell me the first phone to get a 3d acceleration chip? i guess it was a nokia but im wondering which model. even trickier to find, a science paper or report about it. want to have a proper citation in but i keep getting running into market oriented websites and such when searching google about it. i figure so many ppl working on mobile phone games in here, some of you might know this info off the bat..

I suspect it's probably a FOMA phone released in japan..

Wasn't the SE W900 released before the Nokia N93? (though I'm not 100% sure that these were the first phones with 3D accelerators from the respective vendors). Dunno about Motorola, Samsung and the others..

SE W900 is the first SonyEricsson Walkman phone to have 3d acceleration, but I wouldn't bet on it being the first SonyEricsson phone to have it. The 3d support in it is pretty good (as is the entire phone, even by today's standards, and the thing was released in 2005) and I'd be surprised if it's a first generation device.

As far as Nokia goes, N93 doesn't fit the bill at all, that's from 2006. 6630 has pretty good 3D performance, and that's from 2004.. and there might be earlier ones too.

Preacher: but the 6630 doesn't have a 3D-acceleration chip, only a good cpu :)

Did the N-Gage have 3D?

xeron: not a dedicated 3D-chip, as far as I remember

No, I don't think the N-gage did.

The 6630 did indeed have a lot of CPU power for a 4-year old phone. Those are pretty much the specs of phones today (although they now have 2 CPUs instead of one).

Imo the biggest problem with gaming on mobile phones is the horrible controls.

S'funny, I remember Nvidia a while ago going on about about mobile 3D processors for mobile phones. I'll see what I can find.......

That's the main Nvidia spiel.
Britelite: indeed you are right. I've only seen it from M3G side, and I assumed it has acceleration since it doesn't have the usual sluggishness that most Nokia phones have even today. I go sit in the corner now.

At least I found a coupple using 'em. :)
what about the bitboys adventure (not part ot ATi/AMD) ?

The PowerVR MBX / SGX from Imagination Tech. was at least an early contender.
They had to come up with something after the KYRO II :)
But I'm not sure if they were first.

Regarding BitBoys Oy, they had the G40 in 2004. But I'm not sure if that processor can be found in any embedded devices.

I think you need to narrow your search a bit. Most of the stuff mentioned here have been OpenGL ES (1.x / 2.0) capable accelerators, but I'd expect you could find some very early stuff with basic hw acceleration of some aspects of 3D rendering (like simple scanline interpolators etc).
So, I guess the question is "how much 3d acceleration does it have to provide to be regarded as a 3d acceleration chip?".

I was going on the premise that the 3D graphics chips came from 3D graphics chips suppliers. I suppose they would be deemed as "true" 3D chips. I've never seen any other mention of 3D chips inside mobiles up until Nvidia.
but you're a troll/fakeuser, so your opinion doesn't count :)
There's a google thing just for papers and stuff. Did you try searching with it?

something like this...

Slummy: Does everyone think i'm a torrrl? Bugrit! I need to prove my innocence. ;)
If someone here has hardware-level info (registers, etc.) about the PowerVR SGX 535 please feel free to contact me at

Ah, and btw. don't forget Fallanx (Mali chip, now owned by ARM). And of course there are several custom 3D designs by Samsung (SPH-G1000), Mitsubishi (D504i), etc.

j-ar: That's "Falanx", and I doubt anyone here with register info about the SGX would be able to share the info with you, due to NDAs.
