You can probably forget the good old days of watching over somebody's shoulder while they play ;)

More like annoying old days. At least for the person having someone else staring over their shoulder.

I'm not much of a Kid Icarus fan, but if they release a good Mario platformer for the 3DS I might end up buying it.

Are any detailed tech specs known yet? Since it's supposed to be backwards compatible with the DSi I'm guessing that they're sticking with (at least) two ARM processors. But surely they're not using outdated ARMv4/v5 parts anymore? At least not when running in 3DS mode.

mic: standard DS is already arm7+9 ?

the_Ye-Ti: ARM7TDMI is ARMv4T, and ARM946E-S is ARMv5TE. ARMvX means ARM instruction set version X. Yes it's confusing, and that's part of the reason why ARM changed the naming of it's cores (to Cortex A9 etc).

This can be bad if you're on a bus or whatever, but if you're showing a friend some cool new game it's pretty shitty if he can't see the screen. It also means only one person can watch a demo at a time :(

Easy solution: stop hogging the console and hand it over to your friend :P

But yeah, they've pretty much made sure that the 3DS will suck as a demo platform since you can't film the screen with a normal camera and keep the 3D effect, which means that the number of people who will be able to watch your demo will be very small.

It seems the GPU is a PICA200. Never heard about it before.

They picked an OpenGL ES 1.1 GPU for a gaming console released in 2010? I hope that's just a false rumor. Even phones these days have GPUs with a programmable pipeline.

It seems to be ES 1.1 + extensions (including "procedural textures"), and the tools come with some kind of 'shader editor'. Maybe it has very limited shader support, enough for some basic shader fx but not enough to meet ES 2.0? Or maybe it has some basic FX built into hardware, that can be scripted to get shader-like FX? I seem to remember the gamecube had something 'between' shaders and fixed pipeline.

If it DID have a screen that you could film and keep the 3D effect, that would be seriously impressive ;)

I've found another thing based on the same GPU: http://www.nifco-at.co.jp/# if you click on the red button'ish image there's a popup that shows that the GPU does SSS. Aparently.

Well Nintendo said in their conference in E3 that the 3DS has same or even better HW than the Wii itself so i don't care if it has fixed pipe or even programmable pipe cause Wii was nice enough? don't you agree ?

I don't. Wii's best looking game is Super Mario Galaxy, I'm not going to say it looks bad, but it's miles away from anything else, visual wise. But even there I can't stop thinking about all that aliasing.

well it is all about the gameplay you know ! xD

IMO it's a whole sensorial experience. Vision, touch, sound...
