The YLE Demoscene Documentary

category: general [glöplog]

Couldn't find a thread for it apart from the "Future Crew" one, so sue me.

Looks like all episodes are watchable now. The Finnish demoscene experts must currently be having too severe hangovers to advertise this stuff themselves. ;)

I wonder where they left 1996-2006...

Yeah I was wondering the same. Also, sizecoding was just briefly mentioned and no alternative platforms discussed?

Oh no, someone did a subjective presentation of their view and it didn't match mine. Surprising! That said; what's in there was good.
I liked watching it. Surprised to see some people sober
i miss subtitles
you can enable them?

doh :)
good job :)
visy: thats a Menger Sponge btw ! not the zoomer ;)
andromeda did a comeback with noumenon not stargazer. I was expecting more and better. I guess a budget to cover parties around the world interviewing people is out of the question with the crisis and all.

interviewing even people outside helsinki would've been good...

Hardy: they intercut that weirdly (the menger sponge scene is after I mention it... and I flubbed the fact about Andromeda, I know ;P)

The doc is the way it is now because of lack of funding, not because there wasn't motivation to make more. I've talked about it a lot with Arttu "gspot" Silvast who is the producer at YLE for this doc and he'd really like to make more and saw this as a launching pad for future projects.

I hope this explains the motivation behind the documentary a bit. At least I think it was pretty well done and had interesting interviews, even if it was a bit too mainstream platform oriented. I already pitched them ideas to research the Russian spectrum-clone scene, re-emergance of old console aesthetics / demos for platforms where no devtools were accessible etc.

visy, i actually find that the time span and the subject is sufficient for the current series. if you get more funding, i'd suggest that you focus on extending the current episodes and getting international appearances.

the other subjects you mention may have high hacker-value but would be of little interest to the mainstream (which happen to include me :)
great :)

So now we go from the nordic conspiracy to the helsinki conspiracy? :D
I don't think it was that Helsinki-centric at all. Yes, many of the people who were interviewed live in Helsinki these days, but they used to reside somewhere else during their active scene years.

I offered my face to the hordes of video-internet and interview, but alas, I live 600km from hki, so.. at least they got Yolk talking after Dune and Destop declined :)
