A first demo to show to a non-scener...

category: general [glöplog]
Elevated, Chaos Theory and Darwinism.

Elevated mostly for its stunning visuals, Chaos Theory mostly for the great soundtrack, Darwinism purely for the cute creature jumping up and down :)

Even though it's not a demo: Field Trip.

Also, the Popular Demo is 9 years old

This totally invalidates just how brilliant the whole package is ...how again?

It helps to show a bunch of contemporary PC demos and branch out from there -e.g. show 64ks and 4ks later on. Then, start to casually introduce other platforms they either know ("oh, you used to own a GBA? Certain clowns that weren't sober did some really neat stuff on it!") or can relate to using boring stats ("your busted old phone is ten times faster than the machine you need for Starstruck, so yes -this is indeed a feat!").

Darwinism! \o/ I like to show that one too, it's a different kind of impressive than the realtime graphics showcases.

Shifter, I think he was correcting my throwaway statement that it was awesome despite being "10" years old, not suggesting that it sucked because it was about that old ;)

great for children.

btw, interesting fact: a "kid" is a baby goat. and a "child" is a young human. use the correct word please.

Additionally, a nice advice I got from KeyJ: "explain what they see".

Just explain why you love this. I introduced my dad to the demoscene with this: "Remember the 3.5" floppies dad? This thing called Debris fits several times on it, amazing isn't it?". As I know that he knows that 1,44MB isn't much, he understood why I love this.

I find this even more important than to pick the right demo, because there is no "one".

I showed Elevated to some coders today, told them it's 4k - they made fun about the soundtrack. Farking arseholes >:(

@mog: Well, they are probably not coders, more like "Programmers"...

Button: "Cool" is a temperature. "Chick" is a baby bird. Slang is okay sometimes. :)

Napababa is my favourite. Especially kids love it.

For size-restricted compos, I'd definately say Paradise by rgby & Conspiracy from 2004. It has lots of recognizable objects instead of the comon abstract one's normally seen in 64k intros, and it's probably aesthetically "easy" for non-sceners

for kids i'd say legomania and glon243

however, for introducing a new audience i'd go for something i really appreciate (either some of my own creations or some stuff that i really envy). either way - if you want to turn them on; shown them something that turn you on and explain why!
Wouter: Really? A C64 production for a first ever demo in 2011? ;)

how come noone mentioned second reality? seeing it was the first for many here …
i love symetrie and puls as the size to content ratio is magnificent imho. and debris, its top of all time for a reason.
showed wishful thinking and some dubstep themed demos to a friend who's a freetime music producer and he wasnt impressed :( maybe he didnt like me playing with his comp.

another gem is mother, mother my eyes hurt by haujobb, since it always depends on the audience ;) alas, no youtube and it fails to run sometimes which is less impressive

Vectory: Well, what about that demonic scene? That might be scary for a four years old kid. :( I do agree that demo was awesome for newbies.

hplus works pretty well on non-sceners.

This is the demo list I'm presenting on my outreaching:

For artists:
Andromeda Software Development - Spin
Farbrausch - Masagin

For people that experienced old game consoles or computers:
The Black Lotus - Ocean Machine

To show the demoscene spirit:
Farbrausch - Magellan
Haujobb - You Should

I don't know if it's the best way for presenting the demoscene. You need to be careful to choose which demo present to a type of person, 'cause the WTF factor is enormous.
