Assembly Summer 2013

category: parties [glöplog]
Bzm is the de facto scene area. :) Everyone knows that. You really dont have to get totally wasted in the scene area... Its entirely ok to just have a good time. For certain reasons the compos and ceremonies take place in an area filled with teenage (or younger) gamers and no alcohol allowed. The situation is not optimal of course, but its been a somewhat acceptable compromise. I'm quite sure that if the demoscene activities were separated from the gamer teens so that the two sides didn't have to physically meet, it would diminish the significance of them both. Ok, the middle-aged farts would like to keep drinking while watching compos, but then again, many of the gamers would rather not know about any demoscene bullshit that forces them to turn off their screens and stop gaming even for HALF AN HOUR or something. So, both sides are a little bit annoyed, but the organizers think its still best to have it this way. It's for your own good...

I dunno about that yzi. Or I do agree that it's good. But I certainly wasn't annoyed by the gamers this year in any way. And the silver bracelet teens I talked to, when the middle-agers were playing with flashing lights in dark bushes, seemed quite interested in the compos. Even joking about the guys who hide themselves and their screen under a sleeping bag during them, just like the people at bzm. Likewise the comments regarding the compos on the official asm irc channel seemed mainly positive. Most importantly a lot of the compos had some "cross-pollination" from "the other side", even the demo compo this year. And on the other hand there was some kind of street fighter tournament going on at bzm.
chucky: well, you're wrong again. you still need to reg for the party in order to submit your stuff; and usually demo night is still observed by a lot of bzm people from inside the hall. i think the best way to see bzm is like the outside area of breakpoint/revision. you booze and socialize there, watch the relevant compos inside. then booze and socialize there again. and possibly grab a hesburger under way to sober up a bit.

and hesburger is basically mcdonalds yet with manjuice on their burgers.

Yeah I ahree. The number of annoyed people is probably quite small.

But if I think about it, if it was possible to watch the compos without leaving the scene area, I'd do just that and not leave the scene area at all. Sort of like Revision. ;) (Assvision?) And if it was possible to do remote entries, AND if it was raining heavily or something, I might even want to sofa-scenerize... I don't know. How to offer a proper adult demo party with beer and everything, in practically the same place as a gaming/computer event with thousands of teens, so that the teens and particularly their parents dont have to even know about the beer thing... and so that the adults still have a big enough incentive to visit the kids area??? The current bzm system is not a bad solution. ;)

My point is that stream etc at bzm would make less ppl register maybe? and less registered= no interest.

this year I was unable to go and what I read, there was mostly "locals" present.. too bad

anyways. I like the bzm/asm idea. really likes it actually (even if I mosly hang at the asm area maybe as I somewhat doesnt like when ppl are too drunk..) but I hope not the bzm area gets "just it" and ppl are not going to asm atall, that would kill it all.

an "adult party" with beer. well. that is like any other party, right? and face it. many sceners cant handle the beer. and at a place like this, that would be impossible.

_chucky_, bzm for sure never diminished any prods from asm, as most of the people delivering something have always been visiting bzm. the existence of bzm as a strong sideparty has kept the compos at assembly alive, since for quite a lot of people having the possibility to take a beer or few at a party is important.

personally i stopped making releases for assembly because the people running compos never thought that my stuff was worth to show.

how about trying to keep asm compos alive by releasing stuff instead

This. The demo compo was sad.

nosfe: well yes. bzm is important (but I could live without it, as getting drunk is not a priority for me at partys). but I fear that if there is no reason being AT asm and ppl not buying tickets, that would in the end kill the scene area and that would be a real pity.

well hopefully there will be more interesting releases next year.
(well 1k and 4k was nice..)

Ok, raise your hand if you thought "what??? if I had known that the quality and number of entries is going to be THIS low, I would have made something for the demo compo"
added on the 2013-08-05 21:06:35 by yzi yzi
and a stream at bzm maybe would make ppl not paying if they not release anything.

Assembly 2008 had same kind of pc demo compo quality and quantity wise.. It can happen in some year.

magic: yeah, because nothing else happened in 2008 that could have possibly affected the ASM demo compo. Your analytical-foo is weak.

Oh, did I miss the death of the demoscene again?
I'll try to mourn properly after I visit three demoparties in the next three weeks.

dfox: oh the SCENE part is fine, the DEMOS are the ones having a problem
added on the 2013-08-05 23:31:14 by Gargaj Gargaj
Gargaj: well, don't get me wrong, but for a demoparty with ~130 "demoscene seats", the amount and quality of releases is nothing to spit upon.

Sure - there have been better years but the overall distribution of summer parties does make it harder to chose where to release. So releases are - although declining in general - also quite spread out over A LOT of events in a very short timeframe.

I mean - we all know the cause of the decline over the last years - it's nothing new and I doubt that it'll improve over night (or even at all).

You see - there are so many great communities all over the web where artists compete on a daily basis - with instant gratification and better reach than most demoparties can give them. Our concept is different and I've voiced my opinion over what I think we could do to improve it quite often over the last couple of years but I sometime think that I'm alone with that opinion. There's quite a few people here stuck in the past without the will, passion or interest to push the envelope and welcome the necessary change.

Maybe it's will soon be time to embrace the slow death of our hobby and enjoy it as long as we can ;-)
