seattle demoparty: amcbain's idea

category: parties [glöplog]
In the interests of this potentially going somewhere, fresh thread. And I shall quote what he said in the other less-relevant thread:

Quote:

Nice! Sounds fun.

For a single evening of something with a smallish group of people, planned ahead, a place like Metrix probably wouldn't mind. They have a small ceiling-mounted projector and table space. DIY/Maker/Hacker* Seattlites should know that place. If they don't, duuuude! You're missing out! :P They've definitely got the various odds and end parts for things such as could maybe be fashioned in to those small hardware demos. Plus generous hours: noon to midnight, every day of the week. This on the assumption most people are on the west side of the state (I'm not).

take it away, AMCBAIN!

[As noted, I am happy to advise on anything larger. I cannot commit to organizing anything new, however.]
Well I don't know exactly what to do at this point, but I suppose if enough people find this thread we could think about dates for a miniparty.

Also, the URL to Metrix since it was lost (if you use the quote button next to "added" it pulls all the BB Code too, which is nice.) and a link to the original thread.

I will say for anything in the winter timeframeish, being that I live on the other side of the mountains, I probably wouldn't be of any use or be able to come. That leaves a small window yet this year and requires waiting a bit next year. I don't mind making the trip, so that's not a problem, it's just not wanting to endanger myself slogging through a snow-filled pass.

I think that's fine. :) The previous thread indicate there's something like eight people? Nine if you include me.

Lastly if we think a slight bigger and less of a bother to the local hackerspace (since they're not open past midnight), here's the details on the Northwest Rooms in the Seattle center. You don't have to rent them all if you don't need, and they're all relatively large.

What their brochure calls the "Olympic Room" has a projector screen (and perhaps other associated stuff: projector, sound system, etc). If you could rent that by itself, that would work for a small group. Perhaps get that and the "Orcas Room" for those not in town who don't want to pay a hotel.* (Not a large room, though, so if enough people were staying on site if that's even allowable it might be a bit cramped.)

I don't know actual costs (seems easy enough to call and find out if we really wanted), but the Seattle Mini Maker Faire had enough people show up this year to rent all of the Northwest Rooms for two days, so it can't be an inordinate amount of money.

* Hotels around the Seattle Center, or in Seattle in general, tend to be expensive (at least in my searching / opinion). You generally get luckier with places just outside of town, but then you have to sit through traffic to get back in to town. However I have found an ex-motel now Days Inn that's north of downtown which comes to only about $100 after fees and taxes that I've stayed at before. Even the local B&Bs around in townhouses and such don't seem terribly cheap, but perhaps I don't plan far enough in advance for these things (as I mostly do day-trips out there to Metrix).

Food isn't an issue as Seattle is chock-full of food trucks some of which camp out at the Seattle Center area when there's large enough events. If not that there's a multitude of Quality Food Centers (QFC), and restaurants galore. Something could be easily arranged.

Anyway, that's all I have. Probably less than people more local could say, but more than I thought I knew. :)

I've been in there having gone to last two Mini Maker Faires, so I'm not guesstimating based on the brochure for the place.
andr00 has mentioned before that there have been Seattle get-togethers earlier and he also had some sort of possible venue for a larger event when the Moleman 2 screening tour was happening.

I would be interested in attending too, if I know far enough in advance to afford airfare and get time off from work.
It is my goal to attend at least all North American parties currently live once, and encourage more . . .

As for dates, I suggest July. You want to avoid the 11th-13th, because Ferris will probably be at Solskogen then : D

AMcBain, do you have Andr00's email or FB or anything? If not can connect you.
I generally know better than to say I would be able to attend any scene gathering no matter how likely given that I have still never made it to one in 20 years, but I do live in Seattle, soooo...

It would be interesting to know what place that is. I am not a Seattle native and though I visit quite often, my knowledge is variously limited to the places I target on my (usually) day trips.

Truck had said someone by that name lived out this way at Revision 2013 but no, I don't have any contact info. I'm also pretty isolated out here on the lower east side of the state. Most people think Washington is green, and full of trees, but past the mountains? No such things. :P
AMcBain: check your email.

Suggestion:
build an email list of likelies;
recruit fellow orgas;
pick two possible dates;
put out feelers to possible locations;
put up website, Facepalm, Twitter, demoparty.net listing;
send out email, post, post, post;
send slide to many parties;
steal underpants;

I think one place he mentioned was http://central-cinema.com/

the TRSAC guide to building a party is generally "If you book them, they will come".
