Dreamcast demo contest @ breakpoint*o4 (details inside)

category: general [glöplog]
Once again after the tUM*o3 Dreamcast-Scene.com sponsors a party and gives out prices to the best three Dreamcast demos. This time at the breakpoint*o4!

Here's a little FAQ if you have some questions.

Eh? What do you mean?
If you submit your Dreamcast prod at the "Console/Real Wild" compo at the breakpoint*o4 you automaticly have the chance to win prices if your prod is under the best three entries.

What if I submit a Xbox demo?
Nope. As I said, only Dreamcast demos. Of course you can find demos of other platforms in the "Console/Real Wild" compo (which are in direct competition as well) but Dreamcast-Scene only gives out the prizes to the best three DC demos.

What prizes?
Fine prizes. Stay tuned for more info.

Interesting. Where to get a DC?
You need a Dreamcast first. Those are rather cheap in these times, check http://www.ebay.com, http://www.ebay.de, http://www.ebay.co.uk and other auction websites. You shouldn't give away more than 40 Euros to a system with controller.

Okay, I got one! How to start coding?
Use the free development environment "KallistiOS". It's absolutly free and more powerful than the original Sega development Kit "Katakana", plus 100% legal to spread the compiled demo / application / game / whatever. You can get it and more info about it here: http://gamedev.allusion.net/softprj/kos/ - http://gamedev.allusion.net/

Mmmmkay, but where can I look for help?
ConsoleVision forum: http://www.consolevision.com/forums/YaBB.cgi
DCEmulation forum: http://www.dcemulation.com/phpBB/index.php
boob! forum: http://www.boob.co.uk/cgi-bin/ikonboard3/ikonboard.cgi

Where can I get source codes of homebrewn Dreamcast software?
Check out this one: http://www.cagames.com/files/fofsrc_20040301.zip - It's probably the most interesting source code of the whole scene because it's the source code of Feet of Fury, the world's first commericial DC game which was released without Sega libraries, Sega licence and was done by people from the scene.

I'll add more stuff soon when I am in a better mood than now.

"Use the free development environment "KallistiOS". It's absolutly free and more powerful than the original Sega development Kit "Katakana" "

First of all it is called "Katana",and KallistiOS,while a worth alternative,is in no way more powerfull.

Good to see more Dreamcast compos...my beloved system is having some avid followers.

Ehm Katana, of course, my bad. To tell you the truth I am not a programmer and so I only can tell you what DC programmers told me and according to two of them who also worked with Katana, KallistiOS is in a few ways better than the Katana one, but doesn't has support of some devices as well as far as I know.

This is great news for those who still love their Dreamcast! Say, does anyone know if you have to be PRESENT at the party in order to have a demo submitted.

I don't think so, but better ask the guys at #breakpoint on IRCnet.

Great infos. You know, I have a Dreamcast too (My favorite game is Ikaruga (but I don't know it well yet) but I've got to find Rez too (First seen it at TUM)). I was going to ask you what tools are needed to code in Dreamcast, but I didn't wanted to interrupt your analog irc game at the restaurant :)

I'd like to see more Dreamcast demos. My absolute favoritest is Delicious by Yodel. I liked Reviere at TUM too, no matter if it's oldschool (but smooth). I was thinking to start coding on Dreamcast, but at the same time I want to programm any ARM based handheld (perhaps I will buy a GP32 because I will also get the transfer cable with it), and then I have to finish some CPC demos and start coding my 1st C64 stuff and help the people on Nasty Bugs, oh well. I should take it easy ;)

I wish I can see much Dreamcast demo at BP. Dreamcast rulez!!!

Haha Optimus, I didn't know you also have a DC as well, rawks. =)

By the way, did I gave you one of the Lik-Sang.com flyer? You can use the code on it for a US$ 20 discount if you buy a GP32 there.

Four more questions for the FAQ...

Who the heck are you guys?
Dreamcast-Scene. Also known as former "Dreamcast-Petition.com", in 2oo2 we launched as a petition website and had talkes to some game companies. We reached our goals and titles like "Border Down", "Puyo Puyo Fever" and "Psyvariar 2" where released in Japan, also the game "Shikigami no Shiro 2" will be released in a few weeks as well. In 2oo3 we became "Dreamcast-Scene" and now we releasing our own software and hardware and sell it. Even if it looks like we're a big company which has much money, we are not. We also have a very small budget and we're rely to the help of our supporters.

You gamer lamers! What the fark are you doing here then?
We're interested in the scene and like it (especially MetalVotze). In our honest opinion we think that most demosceners don't have a clue how nice the DC is for releasing demos on it and there are also way too less demos out for it. We want to make the DC attractive for sceners.

Is there a Dreamcast emulator so that I don't have to buy one?
Nope. There are two in development but they will not be released in the next months.

Off topic question: Is there a C64 emulator out for the Dreamcast?
Yes there is. Check out DreamFrodo (http://frodo.boob.co.uk/) and DC64 (http://classicgaming.dcemulation.com/).

Guys, do some DC demos. This machine really rocks. GCC could handle your code and if you want to write ASM you will love it. And your hate against Intel-ASM will rise. :)

But since my love is given to the Mega Drive & 32X (two SH2 make one SH4, eh ;) ) I have not the time for DC coding.

Optimus: I hope, you start coding for this machine because I think you are a good coder. Show it to us. :)
Yaeh, time to see something else than uh.. oh.. yes, nothing :)

Anyway, the original SDK including hardware of course kicks more ass than anything else ;)

Rabit: this could be worked around easily.

The rule is, a group member has to file the demo. That is, you simply need to either join a group of someone who goes to BP, or accept in your group someone who does.

The old demoscene truth: grouping is advantageous. ;)
And i think nothing prevents sceners from being in multiple groups.
