excellent job on the soundtrack! (and everything else for that matter :)
..and I'd never thought I' see a demo with poetry, and actually like it :)
this demo is without doubt the most interesting demo released for a long time.
every thumb up!

Oh yeah, this is good. There's not really any 'mindblowing' effects, but the design is where all the strength lies.

Yeah it's quite great. A few things made my enthousiasm go down. ie the big eye pic, seen hundreds of time in demos, please no more eyes. The "00101101101" too, same thing, please find something else :) And over all, the lame poetry, please, have mercy. "I design my life" ... aargglll.
But as i said, the rest of the demo is very very good.

i can't quite share the enthusiasm you guys have. sure, it's not a bad demo, plus it's software. there even were a few pretty cool effects in it. but the music for example didn't really catch me. also, some of the fonts looked like they were done without a lot of caring in 2 minutes in photoshop. also, i find the poetry rather disturbing. instead of simply watching a visual fireworks of effects in a nice flow or something, i have to move my eyes from the left to the right of the screen all the time which disturbs me. sure, i don't have to read the sentences, but they're so dominant, you simply have to. in my eyes, previous ukonx demos were a tiny bit better.
added on the 2002-03-05 15:43:33 by robotriot robotriot
that's a cool one, especially for a non-accelerated demo.. but at some moments I just couldn't help thinking "wow, this could look totally cool if accelerated". maybe I'm not getting the whole "fuck 3d hardware" idea.. maybe I'm just spoiled by all these fat 3d models and smooth fonts. also, the poetry is kinda weird and, as robotriot had properly put it, dominant. but in general, I had fun watching it, so there you go, a thumb up.

rulez added on the 2002-03-05 16:40:14 by drjekil drjekil
Dammit, this could have been much cooler the accelerated way. Furthermore I could live without 'the poetry'. So next time: At least less poetry please and if possible, use todays (gfx) hardware.

yes, this production deserves a thumb up to worship the effort. it produces this real "demofeeling", little bit oldschoolish (nope, it's got nothing to do with the software engine ;). the longest demo i've seen for some time now.
you guys shouldn't care if it's soft- or hardware which drives polygons around. there are still enough reasons to use a software engine. besides, complaining about the "art" side of a demo (poetry in this case) is so damn useless. love or hate it but don't critize any content. that's a bullshit behaviour.

jooder x')
rulez added on the 2002-03-05 19:11:21 by Zafio Zafio
bhead: some kind of effects, like feedbacks and crashzooms, are simpler to do with software rendering, especially if you want to avoid the hell of driver bugs and compatibility testing. and some people simply like the "crisp" look of software engines.

today's pc's are so fast that software rendering is getting more and more interesting if the style or effect you have in mind does not need too many polygons and transparent layers. but i won't say software is better or more scenish or cooler than hardware (or the other way around), it just depends what you want to do in your demo.

ak: you are right. nobody needs bad poetry. not even the demo scene. and bad poetry and "Seven" style destortion does not make art.

all in all a great demo.

If you're doing an accelerated demo and you need some special softrendering FX, it's just a matter of doing Texture->Lock() and there you have a framebuffer of sorts.

But then,

if demos are as fucking AWESOME as this one, I don't give a shit about them being accelerated or not.

To the nitpickers: I didn't pay attention to the content of the poetry but I loved how the texts intermixed with the effects, that was a very good way to blend them. As for the 1001010011, where was that? Either I'm too old (which I am) and my attention falters, or you guys are looking for defects to point out.

ukonx absolutely rule! nonaccel forever!!! :)
rulez added on the 2002-03-05 20:57:18 by lycium lycium
rp, if we can't critisize the content and we can't critisize the technical stuff either, what's left to brag about? 8)
besides, that's not really complaining. complaining is useless, agreed, they did it the way they found applicable and they have all respects for that.

Nice music (not ripped, I'm amazed), gfx, and synchronized design, but I'm not a fan of stolen poetry, sorry. To you, it may be a deep message, but to me it's a grade school assignment written by some girl in Indiana. Also, "no acceleration" doesn't impress me, it tells me you're not using your hardware (cheap 3D cards are everywhere these days). I'm not saying non-accel demos are by default worse (case in point: Ibiza and Enlight T.S.), but it's nothing to brag about when more detail and speed could've easily been had. Like Jare, I'm sure I'm just getting too old. :)

rulez added on the 2002-03-05 22:51:02 by blaine blaine
tomaes, phoenix: Sorry, but your 'use acceleration' comments do suck. It's not always about reaching possible limits but also about art.
added on the 2002-03-05 23:26:37 by Crest Crest
crest: my comment about using acceleration here is (if it's actually possible/adviceable in this case might be another question) to speed up the whole thing. I mean, this crawls on my 400 Mhz, but it doesn't need to imho.

Awesome. UkonX roxxx. No boring fly-by, no meaningless newskool points and lines, this demo reminds me some bigh hit demos from Amiga, like Concrete (Ephidrena)...Superbly designed with tricky texts, cool transitions. but one thing i must roar deeply : "UNISON´s MUSIC ROXXX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "

Oh. My. God! (*)

This is pure Bliss. Amazing visuals, excellent music, very nice and coherent design and weirdest of all, poetry that doesn't make me want to puke. (It actually fits the demo quite nicely)

I simply couldn't find anything wrong with this demo. Everything fits perfectly. There's nothing that jumps out and says "i'm not supposed to be here" and everything just looks so damn stylish all the way through.

Its clearly the best demo i've seen this year and quite possibly one of the best demos of the last few years...

And yes, I wan't fuckin' More!

(*) I don't believe in one but it was the only possible thing to say/think after seeing this piece of pure excellence...

music is very well directed, and at home on a big screen it's like in a cinema show!!!
i love a lot this vaginal transition like a pussy cat explosion ;)
at the 1st view i thinked the last big gfx with a girl is a too long effect, but at the 10th projection it's ok :)
glass object viewed in green is very cool, like a lost soul catched by a security camera, good!
poetry is good, and put some emotions to this great production, and nowadays emotions in demos are so rare, it's for that i think it's an exceptional demo show
very good job friends :-)
rulez added on the 2002-03-08 00:00:44 by Zone (leZone) Zone (leZone)
I second robotriot about the speciality of this prod. sure it sounds and looks cool (thumbs up graphicians and musician), but IMHO it isn't in any way special _soo_ special.

I think the design revolved too much around the poem (nicely selected), thus not giving enough space for the effects.

rp: why shouldn't we critisize the contents of a prod? I myself am not interested in the math behind the code or whether the snare samples are ripped from somewhere etc. I'm interested in the way a given work feels as an integrated whole.
added on the 2002-03-08 00:01:07 by funktion funktion
Cool demo, nicely designed. Eventhough I'm normally a 3D-acc supporter, I think that this demo look quite OK without it. There still are some framebuffer-modifying routines that are easier/faster to do in SW, so I can see that they made the choice.

Good graphics and music, but I don't really understand what's that _great_ design in this demo.
rulez added on the 2002-03-08 09:15:51 by dairos dairos
i give it a rules because it kicked the ass to all the accelerated crap and it has several nice effects. transitions are good but the overall results looks quite "overdesigned" and sorry guys but the poetry is pretty naive... if i've had a single thing to remember about this prod, it would be this one : software rendering rocks!

ok, this is a bit of oldskool-styled demo with modern elements. some really good-looking fx but not that well conneted, software rendering is obvious and some blurs look really great.

the poem doesnt go on well in demo, when you read it on included txt file you get completely other impression.. you'd leave it out.

music is interesting but definitely not my stylee.

Nice 'oldskoolish' demo with the emphasis on design and solid coding. The software rendering is very well done. Touch of Amiga-style and French flair. Beautiful :). I remember the soundtrack from Demovibes. Truly one of the better tracks :). This demo does not change my opinion on scene poetry though ;).
