Bio-demo rocks ! Original and well made !

Not my cup of tea.. I didn't like the blurred design, not the effects, and not the music.
I see that it's well-made, but I simply didn't like it.

For me _the real_ 3rd place of the compo...

Features a very unique, microscope-like look. Unfortunately it's a bit long and boring (but only a little bit), which may be the reason for the bad compo result

the depth focussing effect made this thing look photorealistic on the big screen. one of my favourites from the competition.

a bit slow on radeon9000 p4 2ghz. original and done with great style. but a bit eventless and a bit too abstract for my taste to get the thumb up

Splendid

Very few demos actually reach the quality and maturity of this one.
Anti-conventional yes, while seeing the simplicity/cleanliness of the winning intros & demos at bp, this one is at the total opposite, which makes it very appealing. I've never seen such an amazing organic design in a demo before.

Colors are very very well chosen, making it look very photorealistic. The permanant & moving blur effect is very well used to enhance this look.

The music is very very mature too, switching from time to time between pop, idm and few very basic electro elements, as kewlers musicians can do and do well.

The soundtrack also has a lot of syncho elements, but in the demo it's very well done, it's not over-synced like it would be in many idm & techno demos and it works very nicely like it is.

I like very much the way it's directed, even if it may appear very conventional : the classical "scene after scene" show, but it actually works quite well and also features the kewlers touch in the first and the last scene.

The actual credits are even done with this old bump text effect ( an effect i usually don't like, but this time done in a very nice way ). The idea reminds me of those dogma movies which don't use any special text editing for the credits and where credit texts are actually filmed using some special natural effect ( underwater, candle lighted, flying papers.. )

Very nice that kewlers decided to release this at breakpoint, especially after their award for Variform. Doing something going in another direction was completely unexpected and I actually like that. We like to see different demos, don't we ?

Can you render this masterpiece to a video file ? I would enjoy very much watching it at full speed on my laptop..

Great stuff, how in the world was this 7th? Not enough kaupallista potentiaalia apparently. Everything is good, even the music although it's not really my favourite style. Now if I just had the money to buy a faster PC..

keiichi-fire: What pixel shaders?

Also, I really can't follow the hype here, at least on the big screen it looked quite ordinary to me.

Not so cool like 'Variform', but anyway a very good demo.
added on the 2003-04-23 02:10:00 by Crest Crest
i see no need for pixelshaders for this (this kindof DOF effect is *easily* made with rendertargets, it has been used before to i guess) unless for some speed optimizations... uhm, seems to suck alot o fillrate, wich makes it REALLY laggy here.. i cant really see why tho :)

not a bad demo, but a bit slow, a bit booring and well. not really funny.. to laggy to jaa, schöön.

don't meantion the war.

rulez added on the 2003-04-23 03:58:31 by sea_monkey sea_monkey
One of the best of Breakpoint as far as overall continuity and design. Nothing amateur at all about this one. More proof that Kewlers belong in the hall of fame of demo design.

The music is some of the best out there as well, sort of a mix of newschool IDM clicks with older Autechre-ish synth design. Still melodic and fits perfectly in the context of the visuals.

Some people might complain about bad performance, and yes, it is taxing even on my system... But shouldn't it be? Why not have something that looks like it's from NEXT YEAR instead of TWO YEARS AGO? Only improvement would be having a resolution/bit depth setup screen.

Into the archive you go!

on the other hand, this demo is beautiful. makes you wanna visit a library and grab a book on microbiology. 8) this is how 'primordial soup' could've looked like.

Beautiful, floating, atmospheric, would've deserved better placing (perhaps that'll be corrected at Scene.org Awards 2003? :)

Only thing that unfortunately broke the concistency was the -97 bumpmap credits in the beginning.

I was thinking we'd be in for a cold shower for doing a demo like this.
we try to encapture a new concept into each new demo we make. I can assure you there will _never_ be variform2 or any other sequals for that matter. so many new things juat haven't been done yet.

this demo is incredibly cool. it is provably equipotent to te-2rb by tplom. when the
future can be visualized, then this the artwork of this production might be the
closest result. it doesn't actually show effects, but reveals the acoustic - and mental - world of the amoeba (which is quite hard to depict basically because all reported approaches before needed a sleeping bag, at least). protozoa is completly non-pathetic and unsucks. we remark that it does not contain en explicit political statement.

Little Bitchard and Mel Funktion also once again took the music to a new level. The music just backs up the visual style perfectly.

i´ve just been watching this once more - and for the first time i realised how much gantz graf there is already in this one. even in the music it´s there (especially in the end). to me glitch was too close to the original to be really great but i just love how it was done here.

the atmosphere is so cool... and every objet looks so real... when you look at this demo you feel like in another world... it's just like if you exit you're own body to live for some minutes in the protozoa world.

the sound track is hypnotic and really fits this demo...

definitively an awesome demo.

I thought it sucked a bit the first time I saw it.. I had my checklist ready before me..

X Strange beat
O Hip hop references
O The same cool thing as in variform
O Beer references
X Nice colours
O Karate?
O Explosions?
O Anal Sex?
O Violence?
O Old women?

In short, this demo didnt have the necessary ingredients at that time.. But after a while, it grew on me and twisted my brain into realizing that in fact this is one hell of a cool demo... Didnt even notice the cool blur here and there the first time around.. Roxxorz!
rulez added on the 2003-12-12 07:11:30 by loaderror loaderror
thumbs up, maybe the best demo i've ever seen. like that blurryness, gives it a special atmosphere when its getting sharper once in a while. and the music.. hell, I already voted on scenemusic.net with 5 stars, this is such a good track and its so harmonical with the demo. good work!

Fricking awesome!, soundtrack completely stands on its own and matches the fx perfectly! I Love it! I was blown away when I first saw this. There is a brilliant 'Moonshine mix' of the soundtrack 'Isoljator' out there too (currently on last.fm).

Although I don't really get fond to the palette, the tune creates a very nice Arc so that all those amoeba stuff doesn't get too boring.

The first attempt to create an organic look that really worked. There are so many beautiful scenes with well chosen colors, nice particles systems and great synchronization with an awesome soundtrack. Thumb up! But I suppose here and there some scenes could have been even kewler and there is quite a bit potential for more “direction”.
rulez added on the 2007-05-21 20:58:56 by Admiral^Elyssis Admiral^Elyssis
The colors are not really my taste here (reminds me too much this Mother "Fucking" Nature), but the soundtrack is superb, and the effects are pretty neat. Although a bit slow on my machine at the time, but here you go.

An excellent demo with great music. One of my all-time favourites.
rulez added on the 2012-12-17 21:43:17 by sm sm
what sm said. some of the parts start to look a bit garish due to unfitting color choices (green/grey especially) and the textures at points start to look a bit sludgy and low-res due to the blurring, but aside from those two relatively minor points this is just daunting and immersive as fuck, a big part of it due to the amazing track.
