│ 2. The Quad Biography
└

In our young days (1992) we were just some smartasses who just copied
games and games and games and, yes, games. At that time Sarix, Skin
and another guy had their little computergroup 'pc gremlins'. This was
a 'well-known' group in the computer 'scene' of our town.
Whizz-kid on the other hand, did the same, not in a group, but
independent. At this time, we didn't know eachother.
We got in touch with eachother by our 'gaming' and after some time
we became friends and since then we started going out together.
Sarix started coding some stupid and useless utilities in - don't
  laugh - basic in 1993.
Whizz-kid started up his own board at X-mas 1993 and he
got some demos which he liked very much. He got facinated by the
demo-scene. Some time later, Sarix got those demos too and in 1994
he started to code in assembler. This was very tough, but after
a while he got some knowlegde of coding.

We (Sarix, Skin) started a new group called 'Nix Couriers'.
This group did some coding and some game 'copying'. It wasn't a
great success. The first party we went to is 'bizarre 95'. After
that party we started the 100% demo group 'Quad'. Since we find
out that there was some duwde calling himself 'NIX' so Nix
wouldn't be a good name. (And who would that 'Nix' be, then? :) )

On 11-11-95 sarix released his first intro of Whizz-kid's board.
A couple day's after this, necronomicon joined as a graphics artist.
So we started to work on a applyform. Sarix coded the whole stuff
and we used some ray-art from necronomicon. So we released an
intro/applyform. And some rippers applied since we HATE rippers
they didn't make it in QUAD.
Whizz-kid got some contact with 2 musicians
(soundmeister and goth) who were both members of quad.
With our very first team of Sarix, Skin, Whizz-kid, Soundmeister and
Necronomicon we competed in the X'96 4mb demo compo with a
demo called 'Kamikaze' which reached the 8th place (out of 12).
This wasn't very good but hey everone needs to start somewhere :)

After the X'96 Skin talked to Darth Vader about his demo stuff and
since Darth Vader was a friend of necronomicon, he had seen some things
of quad already and wanted to join too, as a graphics artist.
Nowadays he mostly makes 3D objects for demos and stuff.
One week later a classmate of Skin (G-Day) showed interest as a Musician.

Sarix went to Hogeschool Eindhoven and got a Internet account....
After a few days he was addicted to IRC and he chatted with Morgue
Morgue liked the ideas of Quad, so he joined. To help Sarix with the
  coding.
After all those applies we started working on our 2nd demo.
We worked on it in july, august and september 1996.
Some guest artists joined in for Perception: Zest/Spirit and
Low Profile/Arcamax. We entered the Bizarre'96 Demo compo and reached
the 6th place out of ??.. We were very disappointed that 'DEMOS VOOR
DUMMIES' got ranked 4th since their effort to build the demo was very
low. :) But after all Bizarre was a rocking party and we decided to
try to build a even better demo.

So after the Bizarre we started working on a brand new demo called
Addicted. An entire new 3d engine was written by Sarix.
We kicked Soundmeister and Goth. Since their productiviteit was
very low. Whizz-Kid found out his handle was that orginal so he
decided to change his handle to Arzamas.
With Soundmeister and Goth kicked out of Quad we needed a new
musician and we found one -> Darkxceed,G-Day
Sarix was getting tired to code the demo al by himself so he decided to
search for a new coder. (Morgue wasn't very active he only coded 1
effect for 'perception' so Sarix was a bit pissed)
At Bizarre'96 he had met Inopia so he decided to ask Inopia to join Quad.
And guess what ... He did. He liked the idea of being in a GROUP.
G-Day leaves Quad after the Takeover for a musicgroup called Rave Beats
International. So he could spend all his time to RBI. All the musicians out
here probably heard of him :)
Morgue didn't code anything for 'ADDICTED' so we decided it was better for
Morgue to continue coding for himself :(

Our demo Addicted didn't work fine on the compo machine after the credit part
it hung :( But hey if you code nonstop for 3 days you always mis a bug.
When Sarix got home he started the demo on his machine but he couldn't
get it to hung. A few days before after he got his machine to hung
(victory:)). Try windows->netscape->shutdown-addicted in case you also
can't get the damn thing to crash.
He tryed to build a bugfixed version of addicted and you probably can
find the result all over the world (this demo you should check out).

With a new Coder, Quad started to build their demos in Watcom instead of
Assembler and while building a complete new 3Dengine in watcom a new
coder joined the group -> Sagacity.
On the way we where building everything a guy named BUCKSHAG talked to
us and we liked his ideas and stuff so we invited him to QUAD.

A new schoolyear started and Arzamas couldn't spend more time to QUAD.
So he decided to leave Quad :(.
With Arzamas gone we needed a new musician so we asked G-Day to make
a exception for us and build a cewl tune for a new demo. And since
G-Day is very nice guy he builded the thing. While building the
tune with Darkxceed and seeing previeuws from effects he got the
demo-virus again so he asked if he could join again and we said ofcourse
  YEZ...

With this new team of people we started to build a complete new cool
demo named 'FOCUS'. And Damn did we rock bizarre with this new demo
in watcom. 7 minutes of effects :)
(The above egotrip is not necessarily the opinion of all Quad members)

After Biz97 we still had effects we didn't use in Focus and we thought
you should spoil your eyes on those left-out effects. So we got
together and built a nice demo called Process.

  Blah blah blah blah blah

│ 3. system requirements
└

required PENTIUM PC with a least 16 megabytes of ram.
3 mb of free harddisk space.
any soundcard will do (i think) but incase of
a gus you need 1024k of memory.
svga graphics adapter and a vga color monitor
                Vesa 320x240x16bit lfb
If you don't have Vesa 320x240x16bit try finding
univbe (scitech display doctor) and run it
                - www.scitechsoft.com -
most of the time (if you videoadapter isn't too old)
you suddenly have Vesa 320x240x16bit LFB

recommended pentium 166mhz or above with at least 16 megabytes of ram.
fast pci svga graphics adapter and a svga color monitor.
gravis ultrasound (max/pnp) with a least 1024k of memory.
prepared to watch it for the full 100%

│ 4. demo info (by sagacity)
└
What do you get when you put 3 coders in solitary confinement for
two weeks? We think you'll find that they will end up with a demo not
unlike this one. Made in under 2 weeks, this demo routinely ruins any
sort of image that Quad has built up in the past demos. Inopia coded most
effects, Sarix and Sagacity tried their best to screw them up. They also
did "design". The music was composed by Kork/Trepaan (wahey! thanks!) and
totally screwed up by the MIDAS Sound System (hint to Kork: *NEVER* leave
the instrument numbercolumn blank!) which manifested itself in hideous
breakbeats played at weird pitches. Somehow, only Sagacity seemed to notice
this. Hmm. Probably the only coder with some form of taste?

Anyway, before you run this demo convince yourself your PC has
about 15.3mb of free memory. So, perhaps a clean boot (with ONLY your
soundcard drivers and perhaps UniVBE) will help?

Well, have fun, and OH! - Before we forget: The little fluffy
bunny was designed by Dick 'Fallus' Bruna, so we owe him. Bigtime.
Remember: Next time, we might be able to squeeze even more power out of
your PC. Then again, maybe not.

  Thanx for Support
  Skin for not supporting us.
  Where was Sarix, then? :)
Tbl,Trepaan for delevering the music of their unfinished bizarre demo

│ 10. Troubleshooting
└

  DON'T load your NETWORK drivers.
Delete windows (works for every program).
  Format your windows installation disks.
Boot with a clean config and autoexec.
Wake up, open your eyes and turn on the PC.
if all this fails email to sarix

  If it still doesn't work:
Reboot your neighbour's PC. Don't load ANY drivers, except for
some highly useful (but unfortunately often obscure) soundcard
  drivers. UniVBE will help.

Problems with UniVBE not accepting your videomode, ehrm...We're
working on it. Not. It's simply not our problem! This is a
problem with SciTech's Display Doctor, so kick THEM.
