Your unpopular opinions about the scene

category: residue [glöplog]
Post/discuss your unpopular opinions relating anything about the scene (this was inspired by a similar post in Doomworld, unpopular opinions about Doom)

One from me I try to understand. What's so great about the old Melon Dezign amiga demos? Having watched other big classics by the 90s era (Desert Dreams, Hardwired, Arte, etc) then trying the famous MD ones (Human Target, How to skin a Cat) I don't see anything special about them, but most hold them in high regard. They have few effects (less and less impressive than the classics) and a bit different design, and usually the music is not something enjoyable (too much death too much death wub wub all the way). But some people would suggest to watch this Amiga demo, that Amiga demo, and everything from Melon (the everything from also goes for Orange on PC, who's demos even if nice, I didn't found more special). Orange also had this high regard at the time. Just discussing unpopular opinions, not dissing the groups or something.

Demos for the sake of technical achievement and with low artistic value are absolutely worthless garbage.

Demos with fractals and nothing else are total waste of code.

Demos without catchy music are lame.

making demos in Unity is fine

to quote one of the oneliners i posted:
using shaders from shadertoy for a demo is quite unoriginal.

the 1980s wasn't really that great of a decade.

AGA, 3D accelerators and cross-dev suck hard. Very unpopular!

More colours = Better demo
Catchy tune = Better demo
"Trying to convey an emotion" = Boring, pretentious demo

The scene won't die if we make it a bit more inclusive.

Handling actual floppy disks is a pain in the ass, god bless floppy emulators / mass storage interfaces

Most 8-bit demos are a waste of everyone's time, even more so in the 2020s.

Sesse: take out “8-bit” and you’re almost right
(Almost because they hopefully aren’t a waste of time to those who create them)

imagine all the energy you waste while making a demo... and then complain about bitcoin on discord! :P
This thread is going to be good. Thanks optimus! It’s like a demoscene confession booths.

Most amiga demos of the last 5 years didnt even try! Any amiga demo with a boing ball is shit

And if your demo is not an amiga demo yet features a boing ball then you are a cheap piece of shit

Same goes for using the c64 logo for votes for high end prods. See any c64 prods doing that?

C64 demos are better on youtube because you can fast-forward.

hear hear! oldschool references in new school prods are super cheap and usually shit.

There is way more interesting stuff happening on PC than on any of the oldschool platforms.

What a cathartic thread, thanks optimus! :D And indeed, I do love all my oldschoolers, but goddamn, we git it, you vape!

cubes are boring. 🤷‍♂️

the last ~2 decades individual compos at demoparties are the 'look daddy, i drew you and mommy'-equivalent of far much better stuff that can be found on online communities such as deviantart, pexels, soundcloud, etc and should therefore be ditched!
realtime is irrelevant in modern PC demos, nowadays demos should be an executable that generates a video file (that most people will end watching on YT anyway)

Realtime is a must if the size of your demo exceeds the size of its demo-capture.

Interactivity is irrelevant if the size of your demo is less than the size of its demo-capture.

sizecoding is actually just grind, not magic, and intros are generally totally boring. demos are more interesting creatively and technically.
