Yet more homebrew retro-hardware you can buy

category: general [glöplog]
Has the novelty of owning a minimig worn off? Expanded your C64-DTV as far as you can?

Why not buy a V5Z80P? :-)

Cool piece of hardware hacking! Impressive what can be done by a single person today (much thanks to FPGAs I guess).

Can we buy them at Sundown?
Well, i'll ask him if he's coming along. i'm sure people at sundown would like to see it.

Nice thing

Hmm, that thing is about as poweful as a GBA. The RAM sizes are nearly identical too. I dare say that GBA is more fun coding, and the competition is bigger.
To me it looks utterly retarded. Planar graphics on a 16mhz Z80 does not leave much room for chunky effects, and we're all sick and tired of rasterbars. Probably nice if you want to rub your penis on something bizarre, but that's about it.

Kusma: That is hands down the best product summary I have ever read.

<3 Kusma!

@kusma
He didn't make it to compete with anything in particular, he made it because it was fun to make. The previous incarnations used discrete logic and microcontrollers, and now the guy is learning FPGAs, and has made a cool toy, imho.

recommend him to do hardware triangle filling next.

I think it could be fun to code some demos for - a bit of Amiga (bitplanes) combined with a bit of GBA (tilemodes/sprites) and then a moderaterly clocked Z80. Would be a challenge... But then I guess I'm weird as I like to try out just about any platform.
Still, I think my next odd-demo platform purchase will be a Pandora, this one is just a little too odd, doing demos for it would mean about two people in the whole world would be able to watch them...

looks awesome... i've been looking to get into z80 programming, and this might be it! gotta love that conma tune in the second graphics demo too :)

Stop trying to stop in time. Those things are great to learn, for the person who makes it, but they have nothing new.

You can try doing some very inovative architectures using FPGAs and F'OLD processors.

Well, i'm probably going to get one. Looks like fun, and i like retro stuff.
added on the 2008-06-04 18:11:02 by xeron xeron
Well.. it's not technically retro, is it ;)

new things can be described as retro.

Phil has put his old project pages back online, and i think they're very interesting, epecially the V1 and V2 stuffsfssfs.

The good thing about the v6z80p is the awesome support from Phil. Features we have now, like the 8bit chunky, lowres modes (320x* down to 40x*), 8x8 pattern modes, hardware fill-mode etc. were included shortly after suggesting them. A big thumb up for that.

If you want to play with z80, what about the s1mp3 devices ? They are quite easy to find, z80-based, and not too hard to mess with.

www.s1mp3.org

(and I'll be able to watch your demos).
I looked into s1mp3 devices some years ago, but since there is no standard (ie. different display types, different resolution, different color depth) I think it would be hard to create anything that runs on anything but the exact model you happen to have.

I'm mighty tempted to get a v6z80p, but it is kind of hard to justify buying yet another platform when I have so many already that are waiting to be coded for! :)

I'm still waiting for an Oric demo from you ;-)
