How many demo are made for the Macintosh 128K?

category: offtopic [glöplog]

Hi, one friend of mine had one of the first Macintosh. i just am curious about if there where made demos for the first Macintosh that where introduced in 1984. I see that pouet has MacOS platform but that is kind of misleading because i dont know if there is many demos for the 128K. Can one find Mac128K demos here? Any comments on this?

3.5" is enough by Unreal Voodoo - don't know if it works in 128k, though.

Also, there's this scroller thing, which at least runs on a Mac SE, if not a 128k.

Basically, short of some kind of commercial/in-store demo (like the original 1984 launch presentation), I think you'll be lucky to find one demo that'll work on a Mac 128k.. I mean, how many sceners had or held onto one?

code one!
phoenix: yea, thats what i observe. the launch presentation would've been nice to see again, since you mentioned i actually remember seeing it. but of course, i bet there would be some oldschoolers just dying to exploit that hardware too, even today.

what hardware? isn't it just a monochrome framebuffer and a 68k? why would that be interesting?

@xeron: if that's what the hw is, then it wouldn't..
The correct answer is: No *proper* demos for the Mac 128k yet.

It should be quite easy for Atari ST coders: 68000 @ 8MHz, 512x342 1-bit graphics (with multiple pages), a 22KHz 8-bit DAC (although IIRC the system slows down slightly if you try to use it as the bytes are fed to the DAC during horizontal retrace). 128K hurts a little, but it is doable. And the floppy holds 400K (single sided on 128k mac). There are emulators to test the code out before running it on the real thing. The only difficult part would be figuring out the dev environment.

@xeron: Oh, I think it's possible to make a nice 1-bit demo. Come on, art bursts through its limitations, right?

Or make it run on a Mac Plus or SE, which is the same but with 1MB of RAM. (up to 4 for the SE)

limitations easily brings up more challenges. if i only had such hardware to play on. i think ill stick to my beloved c64. but anyone who dare do anything on that old hardware is owned!
