Kick ass demo! These scenes make the ones in little nell/perfect circle and magia look like they were done by boozoholics.

i wasn't even surprised :)
this is fucking awesome :)

Great

Quite impressive. Ironically the scene in the screenshot is the only one I didn't like :)

PC SUXX PC SUXX !!

(btw.. and Amiga PPC too, haha!)

Congratulations for this great production!
added on the 2004-04-15 by Stelthzje
great demo, superb textures on the mountain scenes.
added on the 2004-04-15 by blackd_wd
probably the maincoder from boozoholics asked too much money this time, so rubbah and kalms had to make on their own :)

great demo, awesome design from louie500 once again. great codework as usual. keep up the good work guys.

now the question is: can they make it 5-in-a-row?
added on the 2004-04-15 by teo_exd
the textures are impressive!

added on the 2004-04-15 by sampi

damn....

can't you just like, er, die? this is getting embarassing for the pc scene.
added on the 2004-04-15 by ryg
just awesome...
the whole amiga compo made me wish to be able to vote for 5 or more demos anyways...
added on the 2004-04-15 by styx^hcr
ryg: you mean its getting embarrasing for all other graphicians/demodeziners than Louie? ;)
added on the 2004-04-15 by Hatikvah
kicked ass.
added on the 2004-04-15 by nosfe
I have to agree nosfe:

THIS KICKED ASS!
added on the 2004-04-15 by Fzool
Fukking rulezzed. The PC-Democompo which was held after this felt like shit. :)
added on the 2004-04-15 by PinZa
awesome... i could hardly put it into words!

that landscape just kicks ass!
added on the 2004-04-15 by lvsti
you just convinced me to buy an amiga :)

very good, especially the train scene and the talking guy.
added on the 2004-04-16 by dipswitch
If this was made with a pc I would still like it. The design, graphics and music was some really good stuff.
Considering it was done on an Amiga, I can't find any words to describe this demo. I'm gonna have nightmares about this tonight! :-)
added on the 2004-04-16 by ekoli
Loved it! Maybe combined demo competitions wouldn't put the Amiga at such a disadvantage these days. Great work, and that landscape is beautiful!

Too bad I do not have an Amiga.
added on the 2004-04-16 by mjz
this is really great !

but

it's 22 megs uncompressed ?

i'm curious how much is music and textures, but perhaps there is some serious precalcing / animation in here.
added on the 2004-04-16 by anix
BRAVO!
added on the 2004-04-16 by p01
good work guys! void in some parts but the music fix it.
added on the 2004-04-16 by trace
The fractal mountain part was incredibly realistic. Amiga rocks still!
added on the 2004-04-16 by crusader
no doubt: best production from bp
added on the 2004-04-16 by shadez
damn this rocked. I would've been perfectly happy just staring at the mountainscape for the whole demo ;-)
added on the 2004-04-16 by uncle-x
OMFG! What the HELL WAS THAT!
added on the 2004-04-16 by myco
Brought the house down at the party, along with about half of the other Amiga entries. I could only shake my head at the barrage of kickass effects and scenes. Absolutely brilliant. Question, though: anyone know what the stagemaster is saying? I can hear 'Breakpoint' and 'Swedish' in there, but the rest is a bit hard to interpret...

Anyway, huge respect! I shall not rest until I've made something comparatively powerful on the c64.
added on the 2004-04-16 by _V_
argh.... too much graphic work, it kills me ! maybe less code experimentation than in little nell (the tree, the fractal sprites,...) but nowadays 3D tricks (panoramic cubes, texture baking) used to perfection as never before.
added on the 2004-04-16 by krabob
Truly a great moment at the partyplace. No shortcuts here, the effort they put in shows, and it works. Thank You for restoring my faith into this scene thing.
added on the 2004-04-16 by Visualice
You are boring assholes, please quit the scene and go doing some Britney Spears MTv Video, so we can stop feeling humiliated.
added on the 2004-04-16 by dixan
no need to argue, it rocks technically and design-wise

added on the 2004-04-16 by svok
sehr sehr gut
and it has atmosphere and a top notch soundtrack. it has everything a pc demo lacks nowadays =) SOUL
added on the 2004-04-16 by jazz
1.) The Soundtrack is ace!
2.) It kinda looks like the 2 TBL Demos before, tho.
3.) Still it's damn sexy...

The Scene on the Screenshot, with that guy, was rather weird to me. He could have moved a bit more, or the camera at least.

I hereby officially apologize for saying "Amiga Sux" and declare proudly: "PC Sux". Yes.

Fuckings to Amiga sceners for having computers which can... ! :)
added on the 2004-04-16 by kb_
Well,. it's like previous TBL demos, not my favorite from the compo (I think that must be the Iris demo, gotta watch it again), but that snow mountain landscape was looking preety realistic!!!

Loved it! Thats the best Amiga Demo i had ever seen ...
added on the 2004-04-16 by lordnikon
Seeing this at the compo on the big screen just made me empty, I just forgot the other demos, forgot to what was up and down, hell might have forgotten my name. Holy shit this production has such a visual impact. The texturing by Louie is absolutely amazing and the code keeps improving and is already beyond what is possible on an amiga. Guys you rule!!!
added on the 2004-04-16 by bonkers
thank you for restoring Visualice's faith in this scene thing.

I love you!
added on the 2004-04-16 by sprocket
wow! when i had a sneak peek at the mountain scene before the compo, I was stunned, and I just hoped that the final product would be of the same quality, and i was NOT dissapointed! TBL, you told me before that this would be a product that you would be able to stand up for, I believe you now! All my love goes out to you! Respect!
added on the 2004-04-16 by spot

The Metalvotze guys seem to believe that they stepped on the PC sceners toes at BP'04 by winning the PC demo compo with Winnerdemo. But anyone who has seen this demo knows that it is in fact TBL who *really* stepped on our toes :-)

omfg. Best demo I've seen in ages. The fact that its on a ~10 year old system just makes it all the more impressive. Can't wait for the Spectrum 48K port!
added on the 2004-04-17 by Mtl
this one just rules the world ... best (tbl) amiga demo i've ever seen, better than rain ;) Just keep up the good work ... we love you !!! ;)
added on the 2004-04-18 by mRyOuNg
sigh.. and yet there are still pc guys who believe we want to see spinning cubes hacked together in a few hours synched to ripped techno music in the demo compo.. THIS is the kind of effort we want to see, guys!

I can imagine the mountain scenes are low-poly, but like little nell and lapsuus, the textures are gorgeous. the following tunnel is a little suspicious, considering it rotates faster than it moves inside.. hmm. the ringmaster and the twirling female were great ideas, just need to tweak those camera angles a little for dramatic effect. :)

and the music.. oh man. i ripped the data file to shreds and still couldn't get at it, anyone have the mod/xm so i can put it on demodulate? and blaizer, if you're out there, please contact me about mindcandy vol 2 menu/trailer music. :)

added on the 2004-04-18 by jobe
This demo on a PC and half the votes would be: "This is just a fly-by - thumb down"
added on the 2004-04-18 by Stelthzje
ehm, wtf are you talking ? xD
added on the 2004-04-18 by elend
Phoenix: it's not a mod/xm/s3m/it/etc
added on the 2004-04-19 by steffo
Phoenix: the format of the music is an PSX ADPCM (VOB file) - mono, 22kHz.
Hope it helps.

This is awesome demo. yes.

slummy: er, yes. in fact i thought the mountains were voxel - seems like my sight was a bit unclear on sunday night already during the compo. they're just textures still looking cool...

thanks.. the tune is great.

Beautifull! Good amiga demos are always worth for thumbing.
added on the 2004-04-19 by Vulture
i would've left that annoying, ugly yelling dude and those hexagons flying on top of the mountains off of the demo... what's with the sci-fi crap? the music in the end without the drums was lovely, but in other parts too demoish for me. there wasn't any real connection between the parts.

everything else in this demo r0xx0rs!! :)
added on the 2004-04-19 by chavez
Wonderfull! The people saying bp 04 was the comeback for Amiga was right. This demo rocks.
added on the 2004-04-19 by Proteque

And Chavez, i LOVE Ninja Bolognese :)
added on the 2004-04-19 by Intrinsic
My comment related to the fact that fly-bys are disregarded and ignored on PC, while they are apparently valued on amiga.

By no means I intended to criticise this demo..

Awesome work from TBL again...
added on the 2004-04-21 by raizor
tour de force as usual, I am willing to bet PC flybys will be popular again if the models and textures would ever be this good, but this is usually neglected

Here's my WinUAE setup, which runs Silkcut fine:

version 0.8.25
RAM: 2MB chip, 8MB fast, 64MB Z3-fast, no slow, no RTG
ROM: Kickstart 3.1
CPU: 68020+FPU, fastest possible, 8MB JIT cache, Indirect, Hard Flush off and everything else on
Display: Full screen (not RTG), horiz & vert centering, doubled line mode
Filter: disabled
Misc: all advanced options off except Show GUI
Chipset: AGA, all misc chipset options off
Sound: Enabled, 100% accurate, buffer size 2
Game and I/O ports: no serial/printer
Hard Drive: virtual, runs Setpatch 43.4 on startup

good luck...
added on the 2004-04-22 by phoenix
i tried the above config (thanks for posting it, btw) but the error i tend to get remains the same:

ERROR: 5: BlockPool_alloc: Pool sysDefaultPool, unable to allocate 10244 bytes

guess my WinUAE is pretty damned to fuck up that certain demo, since everything else runs pretty fine and decent.
added on the 2004-04-22 by keith303
I can see half of the demo and then I get the same error.
added on the 2004-04-22 by Optimouse

Haha.. I tried the configuration of Phoenix, and after the part with the girl it doesn't crash but show the landscape. And while I am looking at it for 5 seconds while saying "Wow! It finally worked!!!", it crashes again with the same platform. So,. I just managed to say few more seconds of it :)

keith303, an amiga doesn't take that much space. it's almost like a big keyboard. so, get a better excuse or rather an amiga. :)
added on the 2004-04-25 by melw
The only problem with amiga is that it takes like 5-10 minutes to precalc on my 040/50 :)

added on the 2004-04-25 by d3pth
great textures, beautiful scenes and good music. but as usual with tbl, slow and incoherent. and when the divx is 34 meg and the demo 22, you start to wonder what the point is
added on the 2004-04-25 by hollowman
after brushing up on the prevoius tbl demos i must say that this one by far is their best one.

  • highly polished, consistent design
  • all 3d scenes really had awesome textures
  • rocking code (engine, bones, ...)
  • great music

felt a bit like inside/cncd on amiga somehow...
this is definately the right direction although i must admit as already said that in essence it's only a 3d scene player. but who cares ;)
what 3dmark is for pc, silkcut is for amiga.
now i only need to get a decent accelerator board for my 040 CPU ;)
added on the 2004-04-26 by spike

polished 3d models and scenes, but no coherency between the scenes
some work on texture, synchros and more, but it miss a story coherency or main thema perhaps, so ok for me

What's all this about PC people hating flybys and anything Amiga? I love flybys as long as something interesting happens (like the music- wow! or scenery like those mountains - wow! or the very professional way the opening credits were done...)

If this were a PC demo, I still would have thumbed it up for the soundtrack, the victorian styling, and that mountainscape. Maybe complain about low resolution, but I don't mind that when there's interesting 3D on an Amiga (and not PowerPC, either)

I think what this shows is the benefits of having a vision, and doing a polished demo rather than some night-before hacking. It's not like the PC can't do things like this either.

seen this style before many times on pc, but what the hell. this one is a credit to it's kind: the soundtrack is damn fine and the visuals are totally slick.

and.. how can anyone make such good scenes with so few polys! total orgasm!! it's great to see what a 50 MHz 060 amiga can do! congratulations! =)

very nice demo, indeed! :) it runs almost perfect on winuae for me to (the sound is slightly out of sync, but theres probably just something wrong with my settings) .. i dont know if its the settings or the specs of my computer that makes this run on winuae, though :Z

>depth/sol: Hmm, could u share your WinUAE settings?

I had the crash problem during/before the mountains too. Now I managed to make it run as a whole accidentally. It's ironic how. I don't know what happened, but one day my WinUAE config fucked up. Every few seconds the speed crawls, I have to press F12 to bring the menu and then back in order to run normal for a little while again. I can't watch anything this way but it's only corrected with sound off. But after this bug in my whole WinUAE config, I was surprised to see that Silkcut runs as a whole. WinUAE fucks up BUT Silkcut runs now!!! (Should I reinstall WinUAE or leave it as it is for the sake of this demo ;)

>it's amazing how fast it is on my WinUAE ... If that represents the speed of a 68060 it's just amazing code.

I think it's more than any 680x0 Amiga on my AthlonXP 2600 now. Because of this reason, I had the weird effect of page-back-flipping (Hmm.. how to say) on the demos 'The Castle' and 'When we ride our enemies'. Previously drawn frames where flipped wrongly. It might have to do with something I have read in the nfo file of one of those demos. Multiple buffer where prerendered before shown, so in a preety fast Amiga (that didn't exist), frames where rendered much faster than outputted and so with not much memory old ones still not shown were erased by later. So,. I had to underclock my computer (or run in OpenGL/Direct3D and put some higher res, instead of software mode on the emulator) in order to watch the demo as it should be. Interesting?

And now I am thinking, is it perhaps the same with WinUAE and Silkcut or not? I think I have to reinstall WinUAE (Because I hate the new bugs), and try to run Silkcut on 1Ghz machine. Or have I already tried that???

i'll be damned.. optimus is right. :)

i was wondering why the heck it ran great on my xp1900, but crashed midway through on my a64 3200. i tried changing/crippling all kinds of winuae settings, to no avail. finally, i dropped my cpu speed down to 1GHz in the BIOS, and voila, no more crash. Disabling JIT or taking emulation speed off "fastest possible" *might* also work, but either will make it so slow it will no longer be enjoyable.

It`s a tradition, each year TBL come to Mekka, now Breakpoint and each year they win. When we saw their signs in the hall, everybody knew who the winner will be. Yes, this year the Amiga demoscene had their definite COMEBACK at the BP! Ephidrena, Up Rough, TBL and many others have shown the PC Scene where the hammer is hanging. Silkcut is pure dope to say it in sprayers slang!

Quite beautiful indeed. Graphically not so consistent but nothing seems totally out of place either and the individual scenes are just lovely. In addition to that this is another demo soundtrack I find myself wanting to listen even when not watching.

I particularly love the beginning and the end on this one, I found them very skillfully composed with a lot of attention to detail.

Falcon port? What? :O

[insert random truck quote about where did his thum went]
added on the 2008-05-13 by xernobyl
There were some talks about that the video is recorded from a 100MHz Falcon, which is wrong.

It's recorded on the "stock" CT60 which is 66 MHz and there is no chipram overclocking either. So a standard 66/16 MHz machine with 14/256MB memory.
added on the 2008-05-13 by evil
yes, nice conversion for the f060 is now available. watching this on real hardware as opposed to an avi is a pleasure. and it runs absolutely fine on a standard ct60 (66 MHz, 16 MHz ST bus).

i heard there is a newer version which has some bugfixes and such. will download tonight.

Cool with the falcon 060 port. Is it faster than on amiga?

Nerve and me tried to port respirator stories, but we sort of gave up at some point. Can't remember why, but I think it was because of the PUBLIC keyword in phxass :)

Any plans to port the rest of the tbl chunky based stuff now then?
added on the 2008-05-14 by loaderror
I can not wait for a working Hatari version that performs Atari Falcon demos well. Version 1.0.0 is on a good way, "Beams" and "Outline 2006 inv" work but the sound emulation just outputs noise.

Loadie, the Falcon version definitly runs faster..

Here's a clip from both versions (the Amiga is from the DivX linked here):

MPEG-4 AVC movie clip comparison

Watching 25 FPS movies on a PC/Mac is bad to begin with frame-rate wise, so this is not exactly optimal, but if you frame-by-frame step it, you'll see that the Falcon updates more frequent. The mountain scene for example seem to move two times on the Falcon for each on the Amiga, most of the time.

added on the 2008-05-15 by evil
Definitively one of the best demos available for Falcon 060

@evil how this is possible? at that video Falcon running on 060@66MHz and Amiga 060@??MHz ?

beside DSP for decoding MP3 music, does Falcon TrueColor chunk video mode helps to speed things up compared to Amiga?
added on the 2008-05-16 by calimero
Calimero, it's MP2 on the Falcon (DSP) and ADPCM (or so I recall) on the Amiga (CPU) so it saves up some time there, and the FastRam on the Falcon is quicker. There is no hicolour involved. I don't know how fast the Amiga processor was on the video recording.

Sad, that this is just a port of Kalms code and thats why it's not pure Falcon demo.
added on the 2008-06-14 by moredhel
Sure, Falcon port runs faster, but the 060 isn't the fastest CPU you can strap to a Commodore Amiga; a 604e is, and i'm sure that could make it go even faster again if silkcut was coded specifically for it ;-)

Not that i'm bashing either machine; Amiga rules, Atari rules.
