This demo simlpy roxx! Very nice modelling, good ideas!

The first plot demo ever which I didn´t find nauseating. Not outstanding, but very cute...
added on the 2004-08-08 by dixan
me like.. but why the fuck do you write c on the amiga?

Sweet! She absolutely rocks :)

Ahem. Dunno. A girl coding demo stuff on all sorts of machines, but using the 'wrong' languages. Was that the punchline? I don't quite get it. Story demos are evil.
added on the 2004-08-08 by tomaes
AWESOME!!! Wish she'd coded more Amigo effects though.
added on the 2004-08-08 by Shanethewolf
Damn, i felt in love with that girl :) Cool demo.

Great idea and nice execution. A worthy winner, though I preferred the ASD one more.
added on the 2004-08-08 by elsewhere
Some 3d models, old computers and and dramatic music. Why don't you just got and kiss the gamers' asses directly? :p

NO NOOOOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

added on the 2004-08-08 by skarab
A bit on the slow side, but at least had an idea. Nothing new tho'
added on the 2004-08-08 by Gnizhak
Good idea, nice 3d, nice music and a very good crt effect. On the other hand, the girl could move her hands a little more on the keyboard at times and the greetings part was somewhat slow on my Athlon XP 2800, gf FX 5600. I watched the linux version btw.

Sure, there were better demos in the compo, but you know how it works on parties :-)

added on the 2004-08-08 by Med
nice idea, but the fact that it's a girl makes it very unrealistic! we all know girls can't code!!!!!!
added on the 2004-08-08 by okkie
I know girls that can code! :)

Okay demo. My computer wasnt really up to it so I am not going to give it a rulez og sucks.
added on the 2004-08-08 by Proteque
A cute girl who can code, now who wouldn't want on of those?
Especially since she seems to be a super-genious able to code a fast starfield in C64 BASIC...

added on the 2004-08-08 by wb
Looks good. But it keeps crashing randomly on my box...
added on the 2004-08-08 by Knox
Wow! What fantastic character animation!

Okay, okay, I'm being sarcastic...

Great idea let down by half-baked execution. A shame, a shame.
added on the 2004-08-08 by thom
And in regards to the comments about "wrong languages" -- I'm thinking the idea is "progression," similar to C64 > Amiga > PC, but instead BASIC > C > ASM...

Maybe...
added on the 2004-08-08 by thom
Wonderful!
added on the 2004-08-08 by evil
Okayish, but no winner. The monitor effect is very nice.

thom: I think the natural progression back then was Basic > ASM > C.

added on the 2004-08-08 by Stelthzje
i really liked this one. nice 'story' and great flow, even tho it was a wee bit simplistic.
added on the 2004-08-08 by uncle-x
Nice idea. Technically not state of the art, but who cares.
added on the 2004-08-08 by daFred

I liked it! (How wouldn't I? ;)
added on the 2004-08-09 by Optimouse
this wasnt even close the best demo at asm.

it disgusts me to see people do stuff like this, which seem to be only done to get votes and to win the compo.
added on the 2004-08-09 by nosfe
cheap sentimentalism ! this really won ?
added on the 2004-08-09 by Weyland Yutani
Entertaining and well executed. Thank you.
added on the 2004-08-09 by Marq
Beautiful :~)
added on the 2004-08-09 by Paralax
it was cute but it didnt deserve to win
added on the 2004-08-09 by ps
cheap sentimentalism indeed. still, it's pretty professionally executed...
added on the 2004-08-09 by bhead
Not perfect by any means, but I can't deny enjoying this. As for the expected "x should've won" whinings, at least this had some kind of an idea behind it instead of a mess of 2567828 glowing layers.. And it's not Metalvoltze either. ;)
added on the 2004-08-09 by break
Felt a bit like "oh, old effects on PC again, how delightfully oldskool and retro" at first, until the Amiga ball appeared and I finally got the idea.

Not exactly my choice for 1st place either, but still a neat idea and cute delivery and of course the fact that it didn't immediately make me puke even though it was a 3D story demo is a definite plus.
added on the 2004-08-09 by jobe
nice but on the other hand i always waited for something to "really" happen..
added on the 2004-08-09 by toxie
I have this cool idea.. Lets try and show the evolution of the demoscene, I think its a really new and fresh idea..

Or, not.
added on the 2004-08-09 by Hatikvah
i guess i dont feel this prod deserves a thumb down but.. it didn't make me feel a damn thing. why this made 1th place is as big a mystery to me as winnerdemo's placement on bp.
added on the 2004-08-09 by lithis
and this **** won at assembly!? haha!
added on the 2004-08-09 by kempy
This is the story of my life. cept I'm not female. And that's why I loved it. It's not the best technically, but it tugged at my heartstrings, and I love it. I'm suprized and glad it won, but I didn't expect it to.

added on the 2004-08-09 by legalize
Thumbs up for the idea, but I agree that the progression should have been BASIC -> ASM -> C
added on the 2004-08-09 by grip
Sooo boring it hurts
added on the 2004-08-09 by samwise
Haha. Great Tits!
added on the 2004-08-09 by elend
I guess the old, obsolete, drunk crowd out numbered the new, fresh, idealists at assembly (or any other party for that matter) again. Do we really need to reminisce about "the good ol' days" every single year? Let's start progressing some, people.
added on the 2004-08-09 by tyfighter
Nice idea... and a very cool tune!
But: This WON assembly??? Were only C64 fanboys there???
The girl looks... static... no motion or emotion, it just sits like a doll... the gir is sooo boring!

Sorry to say that: absolutely overrated, ASM should have won...
added on the 2004-08-09 by Yemeth
Heh.. Reading the comments it looks like someone should do some more research on how assembly works. This demo is pretty much a perfect execution of a crowdpleaser that will win assembly. It has everything it takes to impress the 4000 gamers that are forced to watch it and thereby vote, and it has enough nostalgic moments for most of the demosceners to vote it in the top 5.

So yes, this really won. So did legomania.
added on the 2004-08-10 by leijaa
an outstanding piece of working this one. i loved, it made me smile :) And the music is fscking amazing, just want to listen it looping, on and on. Luckily the ogg didn't even have to be extracted from the demo :)

The only problem, that others have already stated, was the "static" look of the girl. some more animation, facial expressions et cetera would have been nice. Though it rocks anyway, truly a deserved winner !!!
added on the 2004-08-10 by asswhore
basically just a few 3d-scenes. would have fitted better in the video-compo.
the theme itself ("computer nostalgia") is not so very new, but the execution is quite well done.
i second leia, perfect big-party-crowdpleaser: nostalgia, 3d and there is even a girl (huhu, like lara, huhu).
added on the 2004-08-10 by Spin
Lame idea (I second arneweisse on this), but quality-wise carried out professionally.

I wonder who voted this #1 though... some possible candidates have been discussed, but I'd also bet a group of young gamers/sceners trying to act older and/or "leet" by pretending nostalgy towards old machines.
added on the 2004-08-10 by uutee
While not so technically great, the idea is excellent! Maybe this prod shouldn't have won, but I'm happy with it ;)
added on the 2004-08-10 by mecha
Stop whining about the static look of the girl - how many other demos have real character animation? The scenes maybe static but they're very detailed and nicely lit.

Good transitions between scenes - allthough the camera movement could have been a bit less smooth to make it look better.

Also dont forget the nice intro with the electronic blueprint with credits.

Storydemos suck, and the music was really irritating.
added on the 2004-08-10 by kurli
saw it again, sorry, need to thumb it down... i even liked winnerdemo better than this crap.
added on the 2004-08-10 by okkie
I don't know how it looked on the big screen but it sucks quite much anyway.
added on the 2004-08-10 by dairos
Another sucking 'winnerdemo'.
added on the 2004-08-10 by AbcuG!
Why this won is beyond me.

Could it be that most people miss the "good old days", and that the people who weren't a part of the scene back then wish they were?
Hey, I'm as much of a sobbing retro lover as the rest of you, but I don't think this should have won.

Nice demo though.
added on the 2004-08-10 by sprocket
Cute Funny Original too much 3D playing, BUT man! nowadays demos tend to explain a storyline, so try to do that with a copperbars ala oldskool style! huh?

The most surprising of all , and the BEST point on this prod, is that hitek succeded in making all running on a P3 500 using a crappy GF2 MX !!!! WOW WOW!

I'm wondering if this demo were released by other famous demogroups, Anal-shaders or Pussy-fragments would be needed? they're really needed outside videogame industry?...uhm in order to win reconeisance and respect among a DEMOPARTY with a 1st place, seems NOT
added on the 2004-08-10 by JaK
Stupid votephishing.
added on the 2004-08-10 by pyksy
Jak : What are you talking about man... That drivel is typical of people unable to use/watch shader-based demos, and hence diss the technology as 'unneeded for the demoscene'. Which is a bit moronic to say the least...

As for the demo : Very well made. Well done and congratulations ! Keep it up.
added on the 2004-08-10 by Navis
this didn't manage to make me smile.
added on the 2004-08-10 by kaivalya_
hm ok, I take the last statement back (about the moronic think). I now realise what you mean :-)
added on the 2004-08-10 by Navis
Navis: I do not live in Greece and have nothing to do with the Turkey-historical -incident, so calling me Moronic, it's somekind nonsense ;) heheh

I'm NOT against cutting edge-shader-stuff prods, I'm just tired of missusing technology...btw this not the case of Planet Risk wich rocks!
added on the 2004-08-10 by JaK
ok my bad...

But what has Turkey/Greece got to do with the word 'moron' ?
In any case, I apologise, the statement about 'moronic' ideas about shaders, was a description of a group of people, rather than of an individual.
added on the 2004-08-10 by Navis
This was quite nice .. felt good.
added on the 2004-08-10 by drstranger
this is somehow very wonderful
added on the 2004-08-10 by NuKe^SurPriseS!P
By the way, this crashes on my Radeon9800Pro (around the Amiga part, but it could be random).. It worked fine on the crappy integrated Radeion9000 though, with nearly the same setup otherwise.

And while I must say this looked far better on the big screen while drunk and seriously sleep deprived, I still like it.
added on the 2004-08-10 by break
touching
added on the 2004-08-10 by hfr
well ... sweet, sentimental and cheesy. and no surprise at all. we all went that from way, mostly. and while just showing that migration might be a nice basis for a good demo, it's not a good demo itself automatically. cute approach, but no innovation and no style ...

and something I'll never get: if your realisticly intented 3D model of a human being somewhat just ends up looking fake, why sticking with this realism? in this case a cool, more abstract and comic like character with more style and decent animation would have done so much better. and would have had so much more character ...
added on the 2004-08-10 by monroe
and while I talked of it: just displaying 3D things most realisticly might be technically challenging, but is visually plain BORING. the grade of abstraction, exaggeration and interpretation is what makes it interesting, stylish and artsy.
added on the 2004-08-10 by monroe
its nice i like it
added on the 2004-08-11 by slashy
It's a pretty nice little crowd pleaser, but cheaper than a 100 baht crackwhore in Bangkok.

added on the 2004-08-11 by Gargaj
I liked it. Ok, it won't make history, but the idea is fine and it looks good. I found the girl way too static, though.

added on the 2004-08-11 by scythe
i don't have a clue how could this won.
technically this must be really bad, it is absolutely NOT smooth on this P4 1.8Ghz, wow this is ridicoulus.
i'm a veteran retro coder (i've been workin on C+4, Amiga, etc) but i could not really grasp any atmosphere :)
added on the 2004-08-12 by timna
Style- and storywise, this stood out from all the other demos but I can't say that I wasn't surprised when this demo turned out to be the winner

The model-animation in this demo is pretty painful, but still the emotion it brought home is what made this a winner. The spirit is there.

added on the 2004-08-13 by uns3en_
i guess the idea was ok, the execution could have been better, but it wasn't bad (although the last scene was notably jerky). But somehow the whole thing left me feeling that it was a bit crap... a bit too sentimental in a cheesy way perhaps. And why does the girl have shades on while she's coding the pc?? does she not know you can buy monitor filters? or does she have a hangover and she's coding at the party?
added on the 2004-08-13 by psonice
probably she is leia and she is suffering from
hangover <GRIN>

This one was like the life story of sceners that have been around since the 8-bit days... almost brought tears to my eyes. This is definitely one where content outweighed presentation, and well done too!

Nice ideas imho, not bad at all
added on the 2004-08-15 by ghandy
It's quite good, and I like the Linux binary (even though the first part with the credits stutters quite badly there)... still I'd have given first place to Planet Risk which I personally like more.

The music serves the narration perfectly. Proffessional quality in 3d, and good flow at the storyboard. Though my guess is it won't stand out in the crowd in the long run, it is a very entairtaining production and does certainly deserve a thumbs up
added on the 2004-08-22 by amv
bad points :
- only C64, A500+ (yes! rom seems to be Kickstart2.0 and it use a hard drive but where is the left device?) and PC in DOS mode, where are the other legendary computers? (Amstrad, Atari, Accelerated PC...)
- loong black loading, bad files package of the uncompressed datas
- why did you use those faked names ? 'Commahdore', 'Améga'...

good points :
- music is very good and well used, rythm of the scenes are good, cameras are ok
- lightmap usage is good, modeling is ok (poor modeling of the computers, few animations of the hands)
- nostalgia, and the fact the girl grows with the evolution of computers is a good idea and the key of the emotions

so, enough for a thumb up, a sequel will be good with more detailled meshs and more various computers.
added on the 2004-08-23 by Zone (leZone)
nice crowd-pleasing story idea.

there is an undefined thing in the girl that makes me dislike her...
added on the 2004-08-24 by Zest
Very uneven quality, some things are really cool whereas a few others are really badly done.
Mixed feeling in the end, thumb up anyway.

I prefered We Cell / Kewlers though :)
added on the 2004-08-26 by keops
Nostalgy didnt work for me.. I'm too young for that.

Then I have the same comment as keops.. Moreover, music could be much more leet itself. And too bad, the content is only a big flyby through 3D scenes.. I dont think this is a demo. Asd / planet risk (for visuals) and We Cell / Kewlers (for music) are far better I think, check them out.
added on the 2004-08-29 by real2real
sorry, but boooring ..
this simply demonstrates how easy sceners can be influenced by girls and some lame oldskoolfx for voting, there were much better releases. the quality of the demo wasn't that good and the story was uninspired.
added on the 2004-09-01 by tentacle

added on the 2004-09-17 by Vaipon
nice.. but could be better..

by the way, note there was C++ there - something like std::list<Edge> 8-]
added on the 2004-09-18 by randy_u
I agree that it did not deserve to win the compo, but it was very well executed. Some of the nicest points were the real code, the realistic graphics on the screen (including the screen shadow mesh and/or subpixels, I know it was just an overlayed texture but that takes some thought and study to make it different for each machine). The music wasn't bad.

Although this is a story demo, it's not a bad one. It's a lot better than plenty of the other demos that are just a rotating mesh with some stock shader effects on it and messages that go "HAY GUYS WE CAN ROTATE A COOLER LOOKING OBJECT THAN YOU". There have been worse demos to win assembly.

If you nitpick about the code and timeline and things, you really are not the sort of person who can give a balanced opinion on anything and should shut the hell up.
added on the 2004-09-22 by Insectecutor
Not my cup of tea. Nice 3d-models thougth.
added on the 2004-10-02 by blueflame
nice idea tho not the winner imho. the girl model was way to rigid. take a look at vip2. the face at the end was nicely animated.
added on the 2004-10-04 by trigger
Yeah, was said several times: good demo, but not really a winnerdemo (haha, what a bad joke). The girl could've been better animated, some parts a bit shortend.
added on the 2004-10-05 by René Madenmann
An astute demo, which tries to capture the audience (succeeding in it, as I can see) showing memories and memorabilia from the past.
However nice music and idea compensate the not-perfect technical realization and so maybe it is worth a look, in particular if you are born before early eighties.

But it's simply a shame that this is the winner of asm04, with ASD and Kewlers demos around.
added on the 2004-10-10 by Cacodemon
Not a winner in my heart, as it personally doesn't rate in my top 3 asm04 favorites.

Some nice models, although everything is a wee bit static. At least the scenes use good lighting parameters and are rather detailed.

Still, quite a lot of work involved, and it is pretty decent overall. Not something I'd watch more than once though.

i honestly want to give this one a thumb down.. but i keep looking at the screenshot and that blue glow, and i can't. :)

yes, this was definitely meant to pander to the audience to get votes.. but c'mon, like it hasn't happened a hundred times before. i knew where they were going, but like many other demos, the story was vague and less emotional than it could've been. i won't nitpick at what "effects" and "code" were done on what computers, that's for the geeks to do. :) but yeah, the nostalgia thing is only going to work for so long...

Aside from the technical aspects, this is one of the sweetest demos I've seen in years. Excellent.

The music saves this otherwise quite boring production. Also the girl is unnecessarily large in the chest region when she's come of age, which I feel is just childishly sexist and otherwise typical in a bad way for the scene.

Obsoleet by Unreal Voodoo has a very special atmosphere which I guess makes most of us just love it. This is a nostalgic trip that goes back to our C64/128-Amiga childhood.

It's not very impressive technically and it's not about abstract art, so if that's your cup of tea you might not like it. Some people might call it "a boring 3d-fly-by", but I think the demo as a whole has a very high quality.

Graphics looks a bit simple but is still nice, although I would have liked to see the girl model looking a bit less stiff.

The soundtrack by Cairbre is a masterpiece alone and can be downloaded separatly from Unreal Voodoo's website. It really fits like a glove and I love the way it evolves with the demo.

For me, this is a rare gem.
Well made Unreal Voodoo.

Aaaah! I give a thumbs up 9/10. Well, this touches a lot of hearts from the early eighties onwards. I really enjoying looking at this. This left me with a nice warm reflection on those days and how some things still don't change.

Technically and artistically this is quite poor, but it makes up for it with atmosphere.

Of course, most votes are for the nostalgia trip and for someone who enjoyed the "oldskool years" this has such a cosy feeling and is really uplifting to watch.

Definitely shouldn't have won. But since I'm not voting about the results and this demo is kinda cute and somewhat entertaining, I'll give it a thumb.

Obsoleet is one for the crowds, no doubt about that. I disagree with some saying it's for gamers though, I don't think your average CS-playing gamerpartygoer appreciates retro one lousy bit. Most likely it was voted by sceners. While it was not the best demo of the party I find the win acceptable.

There have been other demoscene history demos but this is the best one and does it in an original way also extending to more than just demoscene history. Anyone who has grown up with computers can appreciate the effort, showing a person growing up and crude machines changing towards the more advanced is simply a brilliant idea. Had they not made her a female, much of the critique would be moot and close to none of the charm lost.

The old effects are made to look good and the historical inaccuracies forgivable. Transitioning thru multiple time periods to the very end where it is suggested that this whole demo has been a work of the same girl is nice.

Sometimes it's OK to be popular and still manage to create art. I'm sure the charm in this will last for a while, because it never rested on technical merit.

lol @sexist. i never understood what that's supposed to mean and why it's supposedly a bad thing

regarding the demo: i like the code on screen and yeah, the girl-growing-up concept is quite neat. i wouldn't exactly call it a "story" though.
