Probably slow as hell on Intel processors.

A bit too slow on p4... why "slow on intel"?

Bravo hitchhikr!! What about a release with multiple executables based on nxn trace detail grid?

Runs in oneframe here, but two rotating spheres with reflections doesn't really do it for me, even when in 1kb. Piggie.

I've been bribed by AMD.

I guess this is not as sexy on intel processors, maybe disabling vsnyc and hyperthreading may be of some use (but i don't think so).
Btw, there's 4 spheres (one the create the "floor") and 3 of them are rotating.
This could eventually be converted into a 512 bytes dos program but since i already did an opengl and a 1k d3d i wanted to conclude the "'trilogy" with some software rendering.

I've added a 32 bits version in the archive (was 24 bits only previously) this may solve some troubles for the gfx cards that don't support 320*200*24 gfx mode (or not).
added on the 2004-08-10 16:13:18 by hitchhikr hitchhikr
Nice. Runs very smooth here.

MentorTBC:
if you could give me your complete config that could help me to make it a little bit more compatible also be sure to check my 1k-directx-lightstorm (and 1k-opengl-boulder aswell ;)) and tell me if it works or not as it's almost based on the framework.
added on the 2004-08-11 15:49:50 by hitchhikr hitchhikr
makes my nice fast intel-based workstation look very very slow. Maybe one day i'll have an amd machine, and then this will probably get a thumb up.
added on the 2004-08-11 18:08:23 by psonice psonice
As you can see, the power of a processor doesn't necessary come down to the Mhz/Ghz it claims to be running at (if you weren't too sure about that).
added on the 2004-08-11 20:52:50 by hitchhikr hitchhikr
supercool! now go make a 4k intro!

Looks really cool to me, perhaps it would be even nicer with some color.

I think black'n'white adds a little "something"
(But in reality there's not enough bytes left to present it in full technicolor(tm) :)).

The best 1K ever ! (or at least much better than mine: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=12247 ;)

Ok... raytracing, no sound, 1KB .BAT file, poor fps, bad looking, what have I missed?

arneweisse: perhaps an AMD processor as it doesn't run very well (to say the least) on Intel ones. And better no sound than some crappy beeps-beeps.

what's the point in 24-32 bits if it's grayscale?

Haha, nice anim! But it has kinda been done before, in the Crystal Tetris intro. ;)
J/K, respect! :-D

Good one!
A would look better in a 4:3-resolution though. Or is it just my shitty windoze?

It's a bit slow (~3 FPS on P4 HT 3GHz), has some problems with aspect ratio and I miss shadows somehow, but other than this, it's quite cool.
added on the 2005-02-01 00:32:44 by KK KK
Instead of whining about Intel processors, why don't you bother to figure out what the slowdown is, and try to come up with a fix? There are plenty of raytracers around that work fine on P4s.

I know perfectly where it's coming from.

I can't care less about fixing this old shit.

Care to share it with me? Then I can avoid the problem in my code.
added on the 2005-02-01 01:04:17 by Scali Scali
The fpu of the p4 is a disaster and in 1k i had no room to use the mmx or sse2 instructions (too big) as i'm using an amd processor myself, some people told me about the slowdown on intel processors when the effect was completed and ready, my natural lazyness did the rest.

Some infos here (and surely elsewhere aswell):

added on the 2005-02-01 01:26:02 by hitchhikr hitchhikr
Well, there must be something extraordinary in your code. I see people saying they get about 3 fps on a 3 GHz machine. My 1800+ does way better than that. P4 is not THAT bad.
There must be something that is unusually slow, like denormals or something?
added on the 2005-02-01 01:37:32 by Scali Scali
I've not checked if the numbers go too small but the problem should occurs on amd processors too and i got ~25 fps on mine (1800 too) but that's possible.

[senseless comment]
rulez added on the 2005-02-01 02:42:35 by Gargaj Gargaj
Well, i didn't know that p4's denormalisation level was much higher than older processors.

You may eventually try this one on a p4 (or athlon xp):

every version crashes here
winxp sp2 - firegl - amd64
it's prolly the firegl not supporting the requested mode

I like this. Thumbs up for anything thats not hw accelerated. PLus all one colour to keep bytes - good optimsation, plus the floor is a sphere: smart.
