video?

Yep, a video would be nice. Afteralls for some reasons it didn't ran in winvice and the author doesn't recomend an emulator.
added on the 2007-08-04 19:05:13 by Optimus Optimus
Well, it _does_ run in Vice, it's just that half the effects are missing in action. ;)

not as good in terms of design as viznut's previous VIC -demos, but still stunning. an enjoyment to watch.

Reminds me of the way I would programm my Atari 2600 videochip ;) The decadence contrib had way more beauty, but this one was for coders...

nice, thx for video
Hm ... for some reason the first effect is massively fucked up on my real VIC20. It's like every second vertical line is blacked out. Does this demo require some specific revision of the VIC-20?

If you have problems running this on your machine, allow me to quote viznut's blog

Quote:
After three years of delay, I finally released a VIC-20 demo that uses the bus trick I described in summer 2003 in my "VIC-20 frontiers" article. Basically, the trick makes the processor put specific bytes on the data bus in a specific order, and these bytes get fetched by the video chip as "bus noise". It's quite nice for the kind of effects where you pick individual lines from a bitmap picture to be displayed on specific scanlines. Y-stretchers, rotating bars, fake-3D twisters, you name it.

On the last day of working on the demo, I noticed that there was some difference in the bus implementation in different individual PAL VIC-20s, resulting certain bit leaks to occur differently. Although I declared in the demo that "the last secrets of the VIC-20 hardware have finally been discovered", it seems that there is still some work to do regarding the differences in different motherboard revisions. It is like doing fundamental science: every time you think you have grasped the ultimate explanation, the reality suddenly becomes more complex.

Love how the music just kicks off after the text intro, and then that rolling mirror thing.

I actually liked the first part the most. The roller coaster part felt a bit long. Overall a bit low on contents. But this is Vic-20 after all, which is seriously hardcore ;). Love it! Nice work!

If people want a YouTube upload without the severe audio desyncing. This was captured using the latest VICE, which emulates this quite beautifully.

I did forget to apply lowpass filtering in the postprocessing for the audio however, but it shouldn't sound that much different to the hardware edition otherwise. I had planned to get this to work with a hardware audio dump, but it was decidedly too difficult to get both the audio and video to sync with each other... basically, I'm too lazy to stitch things together.

But that is all completely besides the point. I loved this demo long ago, and I still love it now!

Also, if people want the MKV I uploaded to YouTube, it is inside this Archive collection.

Also wow ... after almost 3 years I finally found that mean basic trick ;)
I guess it's nothing new, to name your file <blah"> which makes it basically unloadable unless it's the first program on the floppy, but having no oldschool background this is the first time I saw said "trick" being used.
I wonder how many others who commented on here have stumbled upon this :P
