another smashin' piece of code by Mr. Jmagic/Complex !
Awesome effects, that demo was the BEST demo from 1995 (and 1996 too)

anyway, nice, but boring a bit.

the 1995 smash hit that introduced effect boxes into the pc scene :)

looking back now, it can be a bit hard to understand why this demo felt so revolutionary back then - after all it's basically a terribly slow-paced object show with some rather bad graphics and a pompous and repetitive tune. but if you compare dope to some of the popular object show demos of the time (like, say, holistic by cascada vr section - a demo that nobody remembers anymore) it's evident that dope has a completely different coherence to it.

it's a question of attitude: dope takes itself very seriously, and everything in it is planned to support that. it doesn't matter that the effects aren't that amazing on their own, when they're presented in such a convincing way.

that's why i think dope is actually a superbly designed demo, contrary to what many people say. there's simply no other explanation for its impact on the pc scene.

Imagine you're a North American, at your first major demoparty in 1995. You've probably seen no more than 20 demos, and your favorite is probably Second Reality. Then, all of a sudden, this DOPE demo shows up on the big screen after it's downloaded fresh from The Gathering across the ocean. As Snowman/Hornet said in the party farewell speech, you've might've been impressed by it if you watched it at home, but to have seen such a demo at your first party ever with sceners you're meeting for the first time, was an unmatchable emotional experience. And that experience is what makes Dope a classic.

But even back in Europe, the demo was popular enough to inspire several parodies, including Rope and Nope. Most people looking back at it now will pass it off as an object show, but I'll never forget the first time I saw it.

p.s. saffron, you hit it dead on the nail too. :)

I was impressed at my 486. One of the fastest and most impressive object shows I had ever seen!

Unfortunatelly I had never a GUS. I heard the Mod from Winamp and I liked it very much,. it's superb! (Well,.. a little repeatitive but still superb! :)

I wish I will see that with sound for the first time in my life, when the GUS32 emulator for DOS is out!

This was perhaps THE demo of the Year 1995. I remember seeing it at X'95 in Holland, where it ran over and over and over on everyone's PC with crowds of fascinated (or maybe just stoned :) sceners around them, the music turned to full volume, and all those discussions like "how did they do that", "are thse really 7800 polygons?", "world domination? those arrogant bastards", "nah, those shadows are only clever environment mapping, I did that five years before", "28 CHANNELS? HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU WASTE 28 CHANNELS?" etc. It simply HAD a great impact on the whole scene. Just like Cyboman II did.

And for me, it was the reason (together with "tears in her eyes" by The REW/Nostalgia which i listened to at the same party) to buy a GUS and later a PC around it :), so well, it has a particular value for me :)

the demo of the year 95?! damn, compare this to stars^nooon... the only thingie dope left in my mind was the fakepolycounting and the bad design.
but eh, music rocked :)
added on the 2001-03-27 21:12:56 by PigPen PigPen
it's a old-filosophy demo i think, with rather older concept (to let you shock with the possibilities of pc and to let you only watch it stunned). but it has marvellous music and is very sympatic. you should object theres nothing much to show now but we don't have the 1995 year now...

I remember tg95, it was in my home town of Stavanger. Rumor had it that there was some drunk Finns at the place (jugi) and that they had a production with them that was totally unlike everything ever seen. Well ..

even though it's a slideshow of effects, dope is a great demo, which made a great impact on the scene when it was released (read above). juig's music is absolutely marvellous. world domination? be my guest! :)

I knew the song before seeing the demo : this jugi's tune was the first XM i loaded in FT2 :) By the way, the demo is exceptionnal for 1995.

a very good demo when it was released. though, i don't think it was the best in '95.
the music is very good.

The 'das product' of '95? Very controversial! :-)

It was new, it was impressive, it was good. And most people still remember this demo very well. Definately a classic!

what I want to say is that when I ran the demo - it was in 1995 i was really amazed, and as i think, it's far better by design compared to theroduct.

And I love how it stylishly exists ;) stopping the music in the middle.

As for music, it's definetly the best (after Second Reality, even now in 2001). I even remastered this song into mp3. (anyone who wants the remaster please mail hmd@mail.ru - if you know where i can find a free host where mp3s are allowed - i'll upload it there)

i never liked the design, but the code.. wheee. it was such a shameless brute-force code showoff, it just had to impress and definitively motivate a young scener back then. thumbs up for making me want to get 8000 polys in sw :)

Dope is one of *the* classic demos that we'll never forget. The soundtrack still kicks. Luckily I'm not only still able to watch it but I was also at TG'95 and could see it on the big screen :)

classic. the effects get abit boring after a couple times but the music will always stay in our hearts.

The music featured in this demo is the music every coder wants to have in his alarmclockradiosnoozersystemdevice.
another note, you may say this demo is incoherent, but that is in a coherent way. And that my friend concludes todays lecture on aestetics.
a true classic!

this is exactly what a demo should be. "design" demos like moralhardcandy and shit _suck_.
rulezadded on the 2002-12-02 07:55:14 by evilgeek evilgeek
I beg to differ.
not only do you IMO compare two products being of altogether different styles and from different eras, but you're generalizing with certain absoluteness too while saying that everything in one genre is "shit" and "sucks". but that of course is but _your_ opinion...
designwise this is nice, but the music just
doesn't contain the elements needed to make me consider it as 'superb' or 'awesome'. I think it's merely ok.
due to my personal taste of music I'd much rather hear MD's tracks blazon forth from peoples mobiles...

people who want to say what all demos (or any other form of art, since demos _are_ a form of art) should look like are nazis and should die a horrible death.

sure, dope is fucking good but not all demos should be like it.

At the end of 94 it was still the time of the amiga scene absolutely setting the trends on how demos should look like. This was why second reality in parts somehow looks like the creators tried to imitate amiga hardware effects (f.e. imitating "glenz vectors").
Early 95 "dope" for me was the first (well known) demo that really concentrated on what PC's were better at than amigas: 3D, 3D and 3D and orchestral sound tracks with more than 4 sound channels.
Very shocking for many especially in the so much more elite amiga scene with many desperate tries to imitate it in the following years.
To make it short: a milestone.

It's funny to read the commentaries on DemoDVD about this demo and the overall hype of the metal plates, describing the effects and the crazy fakes. And I finally found out from the DVD, the possible truth about who mr.Larusso is. The math professor of one of the coders!!! :)

I've seen the demo separately from the music by using a Windows ME bootdisk, and it was a very slow (silent) demo, with a couple of effects that TBL did two years later in 64kb, (so it was probably extremely good for the time) but I also have the music... whoa! The music alone is worth several thumbs.

So:
- major lack of coherency;

- fabolous music.

One of the best demos ever, independently on the many minuses. Only JMagic makes it possible (or Jugi, perhaps) :)

This demo was truely amazing - I liked the darkness in it, but still some of the effects go on for too long, and the music is a bit too repetitive.

But still I find it definitely a classic - I really liked those damn little boxes, which definitely kept staying in the scene for a long time. Another thing which was great, was that Jmagic at that time was so productive, and still managed to keep the quality so high!

one thing never told is the crappy sound quality of the music... it's messy. Sound quality with FT2+16bit sound and 28 channels (!!) was not an option in 1995. It was necessary after so many years of 8bit-4channel-crappy interpolation-nodynamic amiga sound domination !

I never really understood peoples admiration for this one. Maybe it's a bit harsh of me to give it a thumbs down, but it really does'nt do it for me. It never really evolves imho. Maybe you have to had seen it when it came out in order to appreciate it, since people apparently believed in polycounts/redering techniques etc :-)

All the fake fx and lying about stats and hyping things up makes my american sensibilites proud. Still, a nice looking demo (although the spiral fire thingy goes on way too long) and has really nice music and at least to the uninitiated, seems way the fuck more impressive than it's already impressive nature. The commentary on the mindcandy dvd about this is great too. Worth a look!

The soundtrack is the best Demo soundtrack of all times and that materialmorphing cat is awesome. Why isn't the demo twice as long?
rulezadded on the 2006-02-03 17:24:42 by Psychad Psychad
The sound's really fine and the demo flows quite softly with effects that still look relatively nice. I like the fire that basically connects three different scenes and eliminates the typical separation feel of different effects in a classic style demo. Dope also seems quite coherent in style somehow. Everyone should see this, it's alone a sufficient reason to own a GUS along with a few other demos. OTOH, it's on Mindcandy too... But then, seeing the original is better than seeing a lossily packed video of it.

(what saffron and phoenix said)

watching this at naid 1995 with a few hundred other demo fans, just hours after it became available for download, was unforgettable. what an incredible moment!

i believe it was white noise who was on the net at the party, looking for new demos, and got his hands on this. i don't remember if he watched it before it was shown on the big screen/soundsystem.

i didn't go to naid 1995 expecting to see a new production that would become a demoscene classic. however, i wasn't so surprised to see such a thing come from a finnish group released at another party.

the music is great with unique samples (until we started using them ourselves :), and my favorite effect is the fire clouds (simply because of how it looks). the effects boxes were a very cool idea - if the audience doesn't cheer when you draw orange and yellow swirls on the screen, maybe they will when they're told that these are larusse fire clouds. :D

You can tear it appart and point fingers, but as a whole it's got that confident attitude that separates an excellent demo from a merely good one.

I think most people who where born back in '95 can attest that it truly felt like world domination.

I think you'll find that most people feeling the world domination were born a bit earlier than 1995, but yes: complete domination. The partyplace went apeshit when this was shown. Such a good memory.

Great stuff! Music is super, and I love those mid 90s 3d objects floating around. :)

Best demo soundtrack ever!

Too conventional and dragged out for my taste, but still catchy. I liked some of the transitions in particular, and the track is great in its own right.

Just watched it for the first time, I really like the music, and certainly would be impressed back then in 1995. Very enjoyable :)

Insanely good-looking, extremely well-polished in every aspect. And very boring.

typical boring mid-90's object show but music is just perfect. weak thumbs up only for music.

The music definitely drops into the category of my most favourite demoscene soundtracks ever. Graphics are great as well.

aaahhh, the music.
one of the first demoscene related songs, which i've placed on a mixtape between "real" radio hits back then.

For its time technically great, but slow and rather boring to watch! Could have been a killer with better design!
rulezadded on the 2014-06-02 20:13:26 by Daniel Daniel
Great music and attitude which blew me away back then. Not so great design, but that doesn't matter with THAT MUSIC!

Ooh, the horrible slow pacing and lack of sync... anything besides that is really awesome. Especially the soundtrack!
rulezadded on the 2014-07-16 15:55:56 by urs urs
I didn't liked it back then, but I was wrong: it's pompous and slow, but presented in a very smart way to convince you everything on screen is awesome, even though the effects are probably not better than in contemporary releases. And it works!
And the tune by Jugi is still as epic today as it was in 1995.

Since when is it harder to do multiple light sources than one? :) Object spinner parade, but visuals hold together for the time. Thumb for that and the music. Plus, it has a cat.

One of the first demos I ever saw. I love the PS1-like goraud in the beginning. Overall along the same lines as urs.
