haha.. yeah.. calling it "fairlight in 4k" would be a bit unfair because they brought their own stuff too. really good :)

we're all familiar with the growing architecture and ribbon effects, but can we resist them, especially when they glow in 4k? no. :) great music too, well done. nice to have an intro part too in addition to the main scene.

The party version includes a bug in the rendering of the glass panes. We did not discover the bug until 30 mins before the compo. The screenshot shows the correct version. It was not on purpose that the screenshot is different from the intro. - It is taken from our tool - and we were confident that the two were identical.

We are also aware of the problems with some NV cards. We had tested the intro on 7900 and 8600 without problems before submitting, but apparently we were (un)lucky, not hitting machines that gave problems. We are looking into it and will release a final version - including a glass pane fix and a 1680x1080 version - soon.

The problem is driver-related. A buffer in the nv-driver overflows - we are rendering each frame in one batch.
We have seen one example of a similar bug disappearing after doing a cleanup of the nv drivers and reinstalling the newest driver. If you did not cleanly remove your old nv driver before installing the current, it MIGHT help removing the driver from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, and perhaps running e.g. Driver Sweeper. And then doing a fres install of the nv-drivers.
If anybody manages to solve the problem in this way, please post a comment in this thread.

The guys have done a fix - however we need to get it below 4k... so have just a bit of patience :)

Also the soundtrack will be released here when I get the time (read: weekend)

Oh, and thanks A LOT for all the nice comments :)
added on the 2008-03-26 23:26:46 by Puryx Puryx
Skarab and others: We are aware of the bug. It is caused by rendering more than 65536 vertices in a single batch on some drivers. This 'feature' makes 32bit index buffers kind of pointless. We were actually working on a fix (rendering in multiple passes using 16bit indices), when my laptop decided to commit suicide ;(

The fix will probably come some time next week, when I get my nvidia demobox up and running.

The fix will complicate the code somewhat, but we will try to make the final fit in 4k as well.

Thanks for you patience and all the kind comments :)

rulezadded on the 2008-03-27 14:02:44 by chaos chaos
the bug seems to have something to do with very large vertex buffers, and it shows in the d3d debug log (max validation).

it is no good idea to render all polygons with just one large VB, but then in 4k your options might be limited :-)

during the compo, we had the same bug with dundra/darklight, and choose to show these two demos on a computer with older drivers and different (slower) graphics card.

After much delay, due to hardware failure and other fun stuff, we
are now releasing what will hopefully be the final version of Atrium :)

As no resolution or aspect ratio can really be considered
standard anymore, we have included a larger version of the intro
with a proper setup dialog.

Get the final here: clicky, until some loon wakes up and updates the download link.

Thanks for your patience!

Its fantastic to pack all that into 4k.. just superb. I actually like the equalizer cube and the star fx more than the environment builder, but it's all brilliant for me because it's complete in every way.. awesome music too.. 4k.. fuck..

3D cubic stars, 3D cubes figure, rotating, lightening, moving around,
stars enter speed of light, synth music
lands on a planet and a building is built
with lift, stairs, corridors, ... in red, the sky can be seen with the stars,
a very long, red lace, stretches, forming curves and knots, the old 3D cubes figure appears in the sky

I didn't thumb this? :)

Hm, I remember the cube (cluster) on starfield annoyed me, it could have had any kind of replacement for these imo. What's impressive is the progression, as mentioned 64Ks would be proud with something happening for so long.

But I think I would have hovered over the rulez-button if it *had* been only a cube on starfield, due to the excellent music. ;)

The 4k files (the recompressed ones of 2010) crash on Win 8.1 with latest nvidia drivers (335), so I needed to recompress them with the last version of crinkler, but now it rocks!
