That was great in a "didn't expect that style from Orb, but it's awesome!" kind of way.

[06:26] <Ham^Sfl> congratulations! :P
[06:28] <Ham^Sfl> did archmage model the man with the Menger sponge in his hands?

[06:28] <Keops_Eqx> awesome model he made
[06:28] <Ham^Sfl> :D
[06:28] <Keops_Eqx> and the funny story about it is that it's its first 3d model ever

Great demo!!!!
The recursive cubes felt a bit dull though, and at some parts I wished for more timing/interaction with the music as where other parts had rocking interaction with the music :)

You had a tunnel that almost looks like our tunnel in the 4k :D

Nice zoomer, nice shaders! This is of course a rules for you guys!!
rulezadded on the 2008-08-27 07:59:59 by Puryx Puryx
Most excellent indeed! I wished i could nick one of my cdc's and give it to this one but.. It just didn't make it after all. Some parts are fucking ace though! The music is very good but not exceptionally good.

Haven't seen other demos from the party yet so i can't put them in order, waiting for the rest...

Anyway, great job fellas!

rulezadded on the 2008-08-27 08:32:14 by dairos dairos
Let's admit it, the first part + the water effect + this camera movement ala "battlestar galactica / debris" rocks and deserves its thumb.
What arrived next did fall out of my comprehension, it's like Ive been watching oldschool with actual rendering.
As for the music, couldn't say anything else like it's ok; not my cup of tea.

Still, thumb.

I think i saw some "real" reflections as well as some "caustics" or you're just good at faking :) The overall design was a bit too demoish for my taste but whattahell...

super! I loved the transitions part
rulezadded on the 2008-08-27 08:50:18 by pohar pohar
The intro sequence was very nice, then came an Abyss-inspired liquid part that felt a little generic. After that I was simply just won over by the style and polish. And it's sooo nice to see some real, classic artwork in a modern PC demo.

40% of the demo was ok, 40% was good, 19% was brilliant, 1% was genius.

there was a lot of technical demonstration there, and one (new) idea, which was of course the photomosaic endless zoomer for which this demo will be remembered. finally an effect i can steal - if i only knew how you did it ;)

for fucks sake, is there _any_ norwegian group which _does not_ use electro drum n bass for their demos soundtrack?!? there are other music styles just as effective for wow effects, cant you like, as a nation, get over the trend already? it was annoying 2 years ago already.
that being, awesome cool water effect and generally the entire first part of the demo. then it got completly ruined with the crappy infinite zoomer and the fractal cube of cliché filler. for me atleast.
added on the 2008-08-27 15:43:06 by psenough psenough
you know, thumbing something down based on the other pouet comments ("too many thumbs up!") and not the demo itself really sucks.

smash, no, i should thumb this up if i loved it. but, it didn't work for me at all, sorry. just another one demo.
i wouldn't say it really sucks, but it's an average demo, that somehow will win really good demos at nvscene.

Not a single flaw to be spotted.

Maybe you need to put your rose-tinted glasses down to see them. :)

So, yes, a (very) good demo with quality assets and ok music, but as mentioned before, direction/camera work/transitions and even colours (those sierpinski cubes don't _need_ to be all in solid grey) could be improved upon. Some camera paths and cuts felt really unbalanced and awkward. Maybe a final version could fix this.

Fantastic, some of the parts are incredibly awesome.

How the hell did you do the caustics for that abyss-like thing in the begining? are they precalced? or is it the vertex projection to geometry and additively blend method?

The sea-tunnel was absolutely beautiful, as where the cubes in the next scene.

Are the sierpinsky gaskets raytraced?

Probably the best demo I've seen this year.

I second ps on some points : I was a little bit disappointed by the final scenes.

I mean, awesome intro with greets+credits, f*cking cool water effect, nice raytraced cubes, great 2d gfx + 3D model and... I was expecting a "bouquet final", but there are "only" the infinite zoomer + the fractal cube which are good but kind of boring/too quiet.

Concerning the soundtrack, it's good, and I personnally like gloom's dnb-style, but it lacks inventiveness imho.
Great sync btw.

rulezadded on the 2008-08-28 10:36:48 by Blueberry Blueberry
Blueberry: 1994 style? They probably can because it is their OWN "1994" style which was years ahead of the competition back then (i.e. Nexus 7). The typical 1994 demo that I remember does have nothing in common with this demo, though.

I got goosebumps. It was so great to be pwned together with my fellow NA sceners at NVScene. :) The infinite mosaic-zoom was a long-time dream effect of mine (next step, animating each tile!). The music was a little bit of a Nexus 7/Interphace tribute with its sharp stabs, but still modern. Smooth as butta on my R4850 - the way it should be. Finally, thank you for not requiring DX10 or an HD-display. Good that more people can actually run it.

LSnK : if you're are refering to the cubewall scene, it requires a 8800 to have a good framerate because :

- we wanted it to run smooth in 1920x1080
- the scene features soft shadows
- the cubes have recursive reflections (not easy to spot the first time but they are there)
- there is a fancy ambient occlusion lighting on the whole scene to give it a realistic touch.

If it's not smooth on your 8800, you could try to update your drivers (it ran smooth on all 8800 cards we tested it on, in high res).

theres a lot of never seen before stuff in here.. so Andromeda is fullfilling their prophecy of bringing back the real thing to the scene. thanx a lot...also to orb/keops :)
i see it right, you had to run the half demo first to gather enough thumbnails to use em as pixel-replacements including a sorting-routine,which thumbnail to take,by calcing the average-brightness ? fuckin nice new shit i´d say :)
for me the weakest part was the menger-sponge-zoomer...its somehow like with the cubefield in noumenon !

again : Thanx Orb,thanx AOA :))

P.S: music was also nice, thanx Gloom.

for fucks sake, is there _any_ norwegian group which _does not_ use electro drum n bass for their demos soundtrack?!? there are other music styles just as effective for wow effects, cant you like, as a nation, get over the trend already? it was annoying 2 years ago already.

We have discussed this in the Official Norwegian Guild for Demoscene Musicians, and after a vote we have decided on an answer:

on the other hand optima could say it's "uninspired":
- waterworm stolen from zoom3

- statue face "inspired" from lapsuus amiga demo
- etc.
but no it's "legendary". sigh. fanboy :)
rulezadded on the 2008-08-31 16:49:37 by spike spike
waterworm stolen from zoom3

To be honest none of us remembed that there was a waterworm in Zoom3.

It's just that at some point we had those relief water and ocean tunnel effects planned for the design of the demo and we wanted to add a kind of Abyss water blob to introduce them, nothing else :)

Zoom3's author probably grew watching the same movies we did :)
added on the 2008-08-31 17:13:14 by keops keops
keops: this was only meant towards some strange comments people do on pouet. personally i think it's perfectly fine to duplicate stuff you like.

it's only a bit annoying to see people thumb down stuff from not so well-known groups because of "stolen/uninspired stuff" and then not being honest when it comes to rating top-notch quality stuff.

anyway, well done demo, keops!
added on the 2008-08-31 17:19:23 by spike spike

added on the 2008-09-01 22:26:52 by Stebo Stebo
AstronautStebo : the effects following Archmage's pictures are not properly connected. We did not have the time to make proper transitions for them and their design was quite rushed because we seriously ran out of time.

So yeah, there will be "slight" changes in the final version, the work is already in progress ;)

but 45MB! ... isn't that quite big?
added on the 2008-09-02 02:56:56 by tesla tesla
who cares?

The maximum compressed size is 64 megabytes.

added on the 2008-09-02 13:09:14 by prm prm
tesla : yes it is and the zipfile could easily be less than half that size but we used the compo's sizelimit rules largely to have a much shorter loading / depacking time.

Generating things like our 3D noise texture (2 MB in that case) would have made the loading time longer so we prefered to spare the audience and include them in the datafile.

We *hate* long loading times ;)
added on the 2008-09-02 15:48:57 by keops keops
hm, where do you use the 3D noise ?
added on the 2008-09-02 15:51:53 by Navis Navis
Navis: it's used all over, some times subtly, some times not so subtly (e.g. take a look at the depth shader in the humanoid mesh part).

Since I'm posting, let me send a thank-you for all the response so far. I am very happy we finally released this demo.

One more thing: "Menger Sponge"?! I've never heard that before - it sounds like something unpleasant your doctor would use as a last resort.
"Cantor Cube" sounds like more like an effect in a demo :)

- "sister, hand me the Menger Sponge. And for the love of christ, please make sure it is heated at body temperature this time."

ok, ok I must admit. This is a true winner. I really don't get that demo :(. There are some moments with artifacts, or are in unfinished state. Some scenes lack the colour and are desperately screaming for it. Couple of moments are really great and they deserve this thumb up alone. Anyways thanks for describing us directly on paper that we absolutely need to change the style, because it's not working anymore :). Moreover people should be afraid of thumbing this down ... I guess it's hard to be next "Lord Helmet" in the end :D. I will definitely talk with you about this prod on next BP (of course not with Keops :P). Congratulations again!

Anyways thanks for describing us directly on paper that we absolutely need to change the style, because it's not working anymore

You seem to miss the most important point here, like sq totally did : we don't think and craft our prods to win or to appeal a given audience :)

We do those things because it's the effects and style we like, they are the kind of things we want to see in demos, so we just create them, nothing less, nothing more.

The day we craft our demos to win a specific compo or to follow a "winning" trend will be the day we need to stop making demos ;)

There are many transitions to add or change and some missing design to include so the final polished version won't be there before a few weeks. But there will be one, as promised :)

Speaking of which, it would be nice if Mr Gloom could check his emails because it also involves a few minor changes for the soundtrack :D

Since we're been asked about it a few times those last days on irc : we finished the final version last week but it's currently not fully compatible with Kkapture for some reason we're trying to figure out.

Ryg was kind enough to propose to have a look so we will release the binaries along with the new videos as soon as we manage to fix this small issue.

Psycho : after more tests it seems that it's Bass latest version (2.4.2, Sept 2008) that causes the problem. We just can't blame Ryg since Kkapture's latest version is older than Bass latest version :D

We did not check in depth but unless we missed something, this new version of Bass must do something Kkapture obvsiously doesn't like. We don't want to revert to the old version of Bass because of a weird latency bug on my Vista machine...

Time to harass Ryg for a new version ;)

Final version released indeed and links updated (binaries and videos except the DTV one).

What we changed :

- a few transitions
- polishing here and there
- the lighting for 3 parts
- bugfixes on ATI 2600 and the likes

mrounce, we updated this video
http://www.scene.org/file_dl.php?url=ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/parties/2008/nvscen e08/demo/andromeda_orb-stargazer.avi
and Micksam updated the 720p video ftp://micksam7.com/demos/nvscene08/andromeda_orb-stargazer.mp4 (requires a good cpu though)

Calexico : try this new version, we made a quick audio fix

Thank you Knos and Tempest for they know what :)

If you guys still have bugs or issues with this version drop us a mail.

The new transitions are really cool, specially the one after the loading. the loading is still ugly (the grayscale things) tho. You need a hand from fiver2, navis or pixtur for some of the cameras. Th reflection on the menger sponge makes it much nicer, a pity again the cameras.

I don't like the noisy image in the final that much, and the water scene is jerky in comparison to the party version (although I can't see any enhancements there). But the cubes are rendered faster now, that's good. And that final effect is cool! :D

Well done, Keops. A lot of subtle transitions, polishes & a little static that improves the overall feel of the demo without losing any of the brutal 'hardcoreness' of the party version (which unfortunately happened with the final of Candytron).

I look forward to meeting you at Breakpoint when you, Gloom and 'The Rekemelk Boys™' are collecting your statuette(s) ... :-)

Finally got round to watching the final. I like it.. essentially the same, but hugely refined. Like steel said, sometimes something gets lost in a final like this, or it becomes a slightly different demo. I'm glad that didn't happen.

We were supposed to add an effect in the background to replace them but... <insert sorry excuse about lack of time>.

yes you can, with a hidden thumb.

hmm, hidden part. let's look into that basefile.dat. oh my good, the directory is plain text! and there seem to be a bunch of files that certainly don't belong to any part inside the demo. how utterly perplexing!

Great introduction and the sound environment is perfectly suited to each scene.
Otherwise, the reflection of the cubes and the water is truly amazing!
However, the demo loses in intensity towards the end.
In any case, one of the best demo of 2008!
The Atari ST and Amiga have created fabulous artists!
