You can run it in the EightyOne emulator. Make sure you choose ZX81 hardware and 16kb expansion.
Otherwise you can watch the YouTube video.
Note however that the scroller seems very jerky in the youtube video, on the real thing it is smooth as butter 50 fps! :)

If you have a real ZX81 you can use this to load the binary from an mp3 player to the cassette interface. Note that it takes almost four minutes to load a 10kb binary - that's some serious transfer speed! :)

Seriously hardcore. Although the execution is so slick here that it's probably hard to tell exactly *how* hardcore. But trust me, it is.

rulezadded on the 2009-09-14 20:37:26 by ham ham
Damn. I soldered this machine together 25 years ago with my own hands and typed in my ASM code directly as character strings in a REM line. But this one is madness. How the hell do you get that noisy characters for the rotator and the plasma in place. Is is there a way to put RAM where the charset is?
rulezadded on the 2009-09-14 23:19:27 by JAC! JAC!
very nice, noice. Should have ranked much higher.

Thank you all for the thumbs up, much appreciated!
Some more technical info:
Yes, it is possible to point the char-generator at any 512-byte bank in the ROM,
this is utilized in the fullscreen plasma part.
I wrote a program on the PC that simply brute-force analyzed all 16 possible charsets (8kb ROM, 512-bytes per char = 16 possible ones) to find the one which would give the highest number of chars from 'no-pixel set' up to 'char filled with pixels'.
The radial plasma uses my custom 32x48 mode, essentially giving half-height chars.
By using the normal charset but just the upper half, I managed to get somewhat 'dither'-looking 8x4 blocks.

truck / visy: I realise that you're not being *entirely* serious, but the sound and video output on the ZX81 are wired to the same bit of the same I/O port. A demo that managed to combine audio and visuals effectively really would be worth a thumb up... I suspect the best you're going to get is a "tribute" to Cognoscere :-)
added on the 2009-09-16 23:07:18 by gasman gasman
Well, in theory it could play sounds via tape-out but sadly - somehow - it has much weaker amplifier than ZX Spectrum has. I was loading many sound progs for ZX81 but the sound was on the edge of audibility (is there such a word in English?!?!).
Anyway - with sound generated by Z80 the screen would be static. :) At best. :)
Of course there was AY-interface for ZX81 (actually it was BEFORE Spectrum) but for now I didn't manage
1) to force anybody to port the device to ZX81
2) to force anybody to make progs for it. ;)
Awesome! Is that for 16K rampack? Can't believe it would be 1K :)

I dont see anything special in here that looks hard to be done on 16k ram / slower cpu than c64. piggie for the platform.

hires was possible:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1Fxbe_315U&feature=PlayList&p=68657B76 B839A71C&index=11
added on the 2009-09-18 15:43:38 by Oswald Oswald
Oswald: The graphics technique in the video you linked is not true hires (ie. place pixels wherever you want), it's "pseudo-hires", essentially using 8x1 characters, about the same technique I use for my 8x4 mode, with only the first row from each character being used. Since there are only 64 characters in any given bank, and you can't redefine them, you end up with less than 64 of the 256 possibilities you would need for real hires.
Trying to do stuff like plotting or something in pseudohires would be a total nightmare.
added on the 2009-09-18 15:56:56 by Sdw Sdw
Correction, you have inverted chars aswell, so you have a theoretical max of 128 bit patterns, not 64.
added on the 2009-09-18 16:05:49 by Sdw Sdw
shadow: you rule as usual :-)
rulezadded on the 2009-09-18 18:03:31 by thec thec
sdw, Im aware its a hacked charscreen but not much more .) so maybe its possible to do any line-any place effects? (FPP on c64) would be cool for twisters, etc :) I dont get you tho, charset may be not redefined, but repointed ?!
added on the 2009-09-18 20:39:48 by Oswald Oswald
Oswald: Yes, exactly. The charset can be repointed to anywhere in ROM, but not to RAM (unless you make hardware mods). And ROM code has proven not to yield the prettiest of graphics! :)

And *shhhhh* about the FPP stuff, you are spoiling the surprise of some of the effects I have under development! ;)

Mister Foxy "O", you still suck as your crap machine do and still even ZX81 can do better things than your crap hardware for young wealthy yuppies with no brain like yourself.
Thank you for your crap comment - every crap comment from you means the demo is highly incredible, you jerk.
added on the 2009-09-18 23:58:07 by abscess abscess
abscess, are you even capable of commenting on pouet without insulting C= in some way or another? (regardless of your opinion of Oswald). Your 'demoblog' speaks volumes...

"Yes. Spectrum clearly has the best graphic among 8-bitters"

and here's my thumb for using rom as charset ;)

amusing comments :)

great prod, i like it!
rulezadded on the 2009-09-19 13:21:08 by ԹHΞΞ ԹHΞΞ
Of course I said nothing about Spectrum, as it's a ZX81 demo (mr Foxy "O" can distinguish only between his device and "all other computers", that's even more pityful than I thought) but of course the "O" is not capable of commenting on pouet without insulting Spectrum, BBC or whatever, in some way or another, even if the thread is about totally different machines. It shows increasing intellectual impotence of mr Foxy "O": he came even _here_ to insult machine not related with this thread. Truly impressive hatred to superior computers. It's on a verge of obsession.
But Alpha C will never notice it as he's an owner of C64 himself. That's very special visual and intellectual blindness typical for owners of specific electronic devices.
