Definitively an improvement over the previous ones in terms of flow, music and effects. Good job!

A really good MSX demo, and I especially like how it is set to Russian Spectrum scene music. I've never heard their trademark acid sounds on the MSX before.

Totally awesome. Dvik & Joyres are the best MSX coders on this planet (sorry nyyrikki, you are good too) but their design has not always been so good. This demo is, however, really beautiful, solid and flowing in design as well, and the music rocks. Totally deserved to win, even in the really tough company.
rulez added on the 2009-10-26 19:37:42 by mstuomel mstuomel
I also have to add that the MSX and Atari ST demoscene is often overlooked even though it has existed for a long time and has produced absolutely outstanding stuff, extending the boundaries of what can be done on these machines and also having very good artistic values. Maximum respect to these guys :-)

Oh, by the way, if you don't know why this demo is freaking IMPOSSIBLE, take a look at MSX1 specifications, especially at VRAM structure. Even though the character animations are easy and there are 32 hardware sprites, this demo goes way beyond easy tricks

dvik: what is it - 8 bit computer video output grabbed in HD? :)
added on the 2009-10-27 15:21:05 by vibrator vibrator
Yep :) No, I just saw that the initial video wasn't converted that well after uploading to youtube. The new one just use different frame blending on the source to make the youtube version look more close to the original. I should have checked that before making the video public in the first place, but I overlooked that...

i saw this again a couple of times.. even if, for this platform, it's a milestone, it seems to be done with relatively well-known tricks. notably character mode. i understand the 'BOLD' logo has some neat colour tricks.. however, i don't think there's an equivalent of borderkiling, delta polygons, sprite multiplexing or syncscrolling in here. but maybe someone can fill me in..
added on the 2010-01-21 20:06:14 by earx earx
Yeah you're right earx, most effects are some type of character mode effects with sprite overlays to mask the blocky look, like the roulette wheel, checker zoom, plasma, and the tunnel.
Our previous demos have a lot more new and unique effects, but they lack other things like a good story and flow.
One of the reasons for doing most work in character mode was to fit the entire demo in 64kB to avoid breaking it up in parts as the older demos do. We could certainly have added some more technically exciting effects but we chose technically simpler stuff for this one.
